  • Hey gearheads! This video is to demonstrate how you can v8 swap your Dodge Ram or Dakota. I know the video and editing isn't the best, but we can make better videos if you like and subscribe to the channel.
    Parts List:
    Flywheel: flywheel PERFECTION CLUTCH 502754, this is an externally balanced flywheel. 143 tooth for the 5.9 magnum. These are getting hard to come by, but the AMS is available: amzn.to/3ompvO5
    Clutch: LUK 05074 {#05080, 630307177} RepSet® 12" Clutch, you must use a 12" clutch with the 5.9 magnum flywheel, the throwout bearing will interchange as well between the nv3500 and nv4500 transmissions amzn.to/3uq7CSi
    Pressure Plate bolts: 3/8x16, you can find these on ebay or even Reilly's . Chevy pressure plate bolts are fine. amzn.to/3J2xt6Y
    Pilot Bearing: Mopar OEM# 53009180AB: You only need this if running a manual trans. Fun fact! This can be used to mate a newer manual trans to the older LA engines as it fits in the torque converter hub recess. amzn.to/3unxgag
    Flywheel bolts: ARP 240-2801 Flywheel Bolt Kit - Mopar 273-440 V8 7/16-20, 12-Point, .875 UHL amzn.to/3rnY9sI
    New Y Pipe Bolts: 3/8-16 x3" long. Stainless preferred amzn.to/3uoOwMc
    Use the V8 Throttle Cable
    Use the V8 Radiator and Heater Hoses
    Use the V8 Fan shroud if you have it.
    Use a manual Crank sensor for manual, auto for auto. Otherwise your truck won't run!
    Lastly Massage your AC lines to fit, and extend your AC Compressor harness connector. That's it!

      Flywheel is in the description. It's a 143 tooth. You'll need the 12" clutch. Our clutch was ordered like a 1999 dodge ram 2500 with a magnum v8 and nv4500. You can use the throwout bearing for the nv4500 as well.

    • @ultimateenginuity4258
      @ultimateenginuity4258  3 года назад

      I have never looked into a carb setup while retaining the pcm. Several things need addressed.
      1. Your fuel pressure is around 49 psi, you’ll need to regulate it to around 7 psi. No idea how your factory pump will perform being dead headed like that.
      2. Intake- you’ll need to source a proper carb intake manifold
      3. Spark- you’ll likely want to convert to an hei distributor and electronic ignition as your factory distributor only allows for fuel sync phasing, not ignition timing
      4. Transmission performance and kickdown. You’ll need to research how the 46re performs with a carb setup. It may be necessary to run a controller setup for shifting, od, and lockup.
      5. It’s honestly 10x easier to retain factory fuel injection. Not to mention reliability. Our swap truck has performed over 20,000 miles without fault

  • @mv7401
    @mv7401 4 года назад +1

    For the wiring part...couldn't you just get an entire wire harness from the donor vehicle such as a 1500 and use the pcm and harness or will that not mate up to the dakota? That seems like a more time conservative method if possible. Thanks

    • @ultimateenginuity4258
      @ultimateenginuity4258  4 года назад

      Michael Vosburgh good question! However, that would only work in a very specific range. For example, I would have to find a 2000 dodge Dakota that is 2wd, manual, and a v8, then use that harness. The rams use a different harness entirely than the Dakotas. Also there are lots of variances based on year.

    • @ultimateenginuity4258
      @ultimateenginuity4258  2 года назад

      the first transmission was on its way out. It had a cracked tailhousing around the output seal and whined like crazy. Around 18 months ago, we replaced it with a reman nv3500. It holds up great. This truck tows quite frequently and does some tire spinning occasionally. Because we are over the torque rating for the nv3500, I do have to recommend against hard launches on dry pavement

    • @ultimateenginuity4258
      @ultimateenginuity4258  2 года назад +1

      There are several possible issues here, this is what I would check.
      1. It’s possible your ecm connectors are not attached properly. Verify they are making a good connection before proceeding.
      2. What computer are you running? Many Durangos have security Protocols. Dakota rt pcm’s are recommended or a custom tune from FRP. Additionally, you should try your stock pcm. This should allow your truck to start on 6 cylinders if all else is working properly.
      Alternatively, full size truck ecm’s will run the engine, but not the cluster. Keep this in mind if you want to troubleshoot a no start issue.
      3. Is your ignition timing set right? Make sure you aren’t 180° out. Also, verify you have spark.
      4. Are your injectors firing off? You can test this using a small shot of starting fluid. If it hits, you likely are not getting fuel.

    • @Dellyranks21

      @@ultimateenginuity4258 thank you. Much appreciated. I tried it with the small shot of starting fuel and it hits. All connectors are attached properly. @@Bama_RTMF you can use any dakota/ durango/ ram engine. You will need the dakota/ durango specific oil pan and oil pickup. For your truck, you'd ideally look for a 1997-1999 donor, as they changed the harness and engine bay layout for 2000 and up. I suggest adding the injector wires to your original harness, as it will take way longer to do a complete harness swap, and you may run into compatibility issues depending on the donor

    What if I have an entire doner truck? I have a 98 dakota (totataled parts truck) and a 97 dakota. Both trucks are 4x4 but the doner is a sport with an automatic and the 97 (daily driver) is a manual SLT. The 97 also has a 3.92 GR for the front and rear. I have taken the 3.55 rear and front out of the doner and put it in my 97 because finding parts for 3.92 are a pain in the ass.
    Question is. Since have 2 entire trucks. Cant I just take the motor out of my parts truck and put it in my DD? I mean I have the computer + harness + everything. I know there is a mod I have to do with the manual by using the flywheel from the auto because of the way the starter engages.That being said. While I have the 318 out of the parts truck I plan on rebuilding it and doing the hughes mod to the plenum pan. When I say rebuild it, I mean New pistons/camshafts/rings/seals/ect. Do you think that the AX15 that is in my DD could handle the torque from the 318 or do you think I need to pickup an NV3500 or NV4500? I know these had an option for the NV1500 but those are trash.
