I've had other surf guys tell me braid is a bad choice. I agree with tony completely. Braid shows you everything. (I just set the drag very loose) You learn to tell whether it's a little guy or a giant, your rod rest just needs to be rigged not to let go before the drag inertia lets the line scream out. (For reference, I fish the north Florida Gulf Coast, and as a treat, I get a trip to the Atlantic side in coconut country a couple times a year.)
thanks for the great information, its nice to see the one on one interaction with a local bait shop. its wonderful to see the enthusiasm and the great knowledge. it just cant be beet. thanks once again!!!!
Just found you. Great information. I'm trying surf fishing in a couple weeks for the first time after a lifetime of ultralight fishing. Really needed to learn a different style of fishing. Your videos have helped greatly. Thank you.
Finally some good information. Many video's about fishing but not to much about the fishing gear you can use. Started again with fishing after my retirement and learning now what to use and what to pay. Like to buy several boat and beach rods and reels for myself and some friends. Are here people with experience about NGT and Lineaeffe rods and reels? They are cheap and i think good enough for non-professionals like me and my friends.
Very intriguing to see the difference between people who fish clean beaches down south compared to heavy ground marks in the north east where I’m from, for example a lot of lads fish with 60/70lb braid straight through and traces with 100lb rig body and 60lb snood
Feels like i'm right there in the store absorbing all this lovely information. Thanks Tony and TAFishing. BTW: Nice fugly fish you got there lol. Looks like half blowfish, half stonefish.
Just love your fishing tips and stuff.!!!..Makes me smile when watching and all very good stuff to boot Keep it up..Thank you..Alan from Norfolk ..U.K .
Good god , I've just put years of knowledge into my head that I know would have taken years to figure out , cheers boys, I'm forty now and have just found a great escape. Irish waters won't know what hit um, Mick south west..!
Yep,I've done the shore shark thing, catching up to 8 Lemons over 100lbs to about 150lbs in an evening.Had big Bulls up to 300lbs as well but they are so strong I kept getting busted off on bridge buttresses.Locked drag, thumbs on spool. They still rip it out.Tried blues off rocks in Isles of Scilly (UK)but not had one yet.Best shore shark fishing are Bronzies off Namibia surf, and Florida Keys for Lemons and Bulls. Have found Blacktips not so good at night.I cast out the bait.No model boats.
Hello Tony. I can see this is an 8 year old video but that has been really useful, as I have just started looking at surf fishing, so thank you. I suspect things have moved on a little since this but its a great starter.
They have and at the same time they have not. Rigs on the overall are still the same and rods and reels are still the same. What has changed is the quality of fishing line so in some cases you can get the same strenght on thinner lines wich means you can use thinner lines. Unless you fish on places with a lot of snags, in that case things are still the same too. Never use braid as reel line whatever the type of reel though
awesome advise and tips. However, for performance casting, spinning and casting rods are not the same. Spinning rod's guide is set below the spine of the blank where casting rod is set above it. The power of the blank is produced from the curve from the spine.
greame would you ever consider coming to Scotland and fishing the rivers for salmon and the trout fisheries around that area i know a few premier trout fisheries and some great spots on the tweed. Could u do some more salmon fishing vids and if you want series fishing come to Scotland!!!!!!!!
What would be the best sea fishing mono line as off today is braid the way forward or a good quality mono seen alot off hate on braid and sounds like it can bit abit off a pain to work with are there much difference in bite detection strength abrasion and casting with a good quality mono compared to a cheaper one Daiwia sensor or ultimate f1 mono what is the best line put off these 2
@@TAFishing I am leaning towards mono but going for a high quality mono I've only ever used mono line that came with like cheap real is there any different in bite detection the stretch on a better quality one and abrasion strength and casting distance

Ah yes, Mr Kirrage... convinced me to buy another 7HT because Daiwa were going to stop making them... Well, I moved in 97 and it was a year or two before then... so possibly 25 years ago! And that 7HT still hasn't come out of the box!
I have a reel that will hold 600 yards of 30 lb mono. I'm planning on filling it with 550 yards of 80 lb. braid and topping off with 50 lb mono. would that work for sharks from a pier? (USA)
I personally wouldn't use the topping of 50lb mono on top of the braid.By the time you tie in the knot it may be substantially weaker, say 45lbs,and that sort of defeats the object to using the 80lb braid, which should be sufficient. I would stick with the 80 straight through.Good luck and send us a picture if you get one.
Can someone recommend a 70 £ setup that he is talking about? I mean a cheap ebay replica of the daiwa tournament iso 5500 plus a 15 foot low rider rings beach rod?
Hi i am a beginner fisherman and i know that you re an expert i wonder if you can help please. I just bought a reel Shimano Ultega 14000 xsd from Angling Direct just over a month ago and since i used it when i cast and turn the handle the metal above the spool doesnt click back after casting and i complaint they told me that with new Shimano reels it is normal. So i went on a blog in youtube i have been told that is wrong so i didnt know who to believe ! Thats why i am writing to you. Please clarify me if i am wrong. Thank you.
Can't help you on that one as all my tackle is old,I don't know any of the new models/makes. I imagine if there is a fault you can get it changed/replaced or get a refund in accordance with any consumer protection on purchases. I'm guessing you mean the bale arm ? these normal reels clunk closed as you turn the handle, but maybe there is some new make where they don't do that. You need to look into it,maybe ask around on forums,or better still contact Shimano direct to to explain it to you.
only time i have ever "fished" is with a little net when i was about 7 yrs old, always wanted to have a go at beach casting. im always down at dungeness, (even though its some 100 miles from my home) and i see the guys on the shingle down there, but i dont know anyone that can fish so dont know how to start, thought about going into Seagull tackle and asking? once asked in a shop about course fishing, and they just made fun of me and made me feel like a wally, so kind of puts me off, but want a hobby and the thought of freezing my gonads off on the shingle catching my dinner sounds appealing lol
Dave Hawkins, shame you are not closer to Mablethorpe. I have some experiance fishing with my dad on a pier in holland when i was a late teen. I like to pick up fishing again and it is better to have a mate with you.
Glad you enjoy it....the films are for watching...you don't always have to be a mad keen fisherman...Check out Mike's T.A.Outdoors site on RUclips, might be films of interest for you there
Not a criticism but do you use auto focus on the camera? I noticed particularly talking in the tackle shop whenever either of you show a rig to the camera it refuses to focus it causing me to think you're on manual focus. Some cameras have an auto focus that you can hold down for a second and re-focus pretty quick. Other than that really top vids been watching since lastnight!
THAT was a totally awesome interview!!! so glad i had the chance to listen to you guys, thx!!
What an interesting chap to talk to. And so much information. Nice one guys!!
I love that in the thumbnail, Tony appears to hold the rod like a rifle! Great stuff Graham 😊

Could be. Think we caught Bullhead and Rockling.
Great. Video. Can you order fresh black lug from Tony's Tackle for delivery?
You need to ask him,as I have no idea.
More of these, maybe for pike-fishing?
awesome advise and tips. However, for performance casting, spinning and casting rods are not the same. Spinning rod's guide is set below the spine of the blank where casting rod is set above it. The power of the blank is produced from the curve from the spine.
Good!
Bullhead ? Maybe there are other names for it ??
Very interesting differences in some of equipment between England and the US.

Daiwia sensor or ultimate f1 mono what is the best line put off these 2
For beginners I reckon Mono is the safest bet. We caught plenty of fish on mono before braid was even invented ??
@@TAFishing I am leaning towards mono but going for a high quality mono I've only ever used mono line that came with like cheap real is there any different in bite detection the stretch on a better quality one and abrasion strength and casting distance
When fishing with braid is there still need for a shock lead ?
Depends on the breaking strain of the braid. I have used both, but with 50/60lb braid I just use it direct to the rig.

How about a episode on best surf rod and reel on a budget challenge... PlzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZ
How far do you think i should cast for flatfish ?? Love your videos by the way 😇
great video!!
so what the good size reel for surf fishing
Use a circle or kahle hook and let the fish hook itself. Don't reel til the rod tip starts bouncing. And dont snatch to set the hook. Nice video.
I remember when the Intrepid Monarch reel was 99p !

Hey, kan you recommend a spin surfcast rod about 15" 6-8 ozAnd is it true, that you" have to have a big long rod too cast far away?
+Mikkel Dyrhof Sorry, all my rods are old and out of production so I don't know what new ones are good.12 foot long would be a good average.
2 legends
sir,can u suggest what the best reel beach use?
I have no idea there are so many. You need to contact a tackle shop.
I have a reel that will hold 600 yards of 30 lb mono. I'm planning on filling it with 550 yards of 80 lb. braid and topping off with 50 lb mono. would that work for sharks from a pier? (USA)
