    Thank you for the upload.
Brings back memories of hard + fair footy.
Today's game is robotic and boring.
    Watching from Australia.

Mike Gibson (9 Sports presenter) as well as RL did F1 for Channel 9 and the theme was originally from the Space 1999 feature film Alien Attack and the commentator Ian Maurice later moved to 10

This is so much better than todays rugby league. Football players instead of athletes.

At 4:44 ,for once Jack Gibson got it wrong. Lewis's little grubber kick for Kenny wasn't rehearsed at all. According to Lewis, there was nothing much on until he heard Kenny's call of "They're all up to flat - put one down for for me!" Lewis just reacted in the positive and trusted Kenny's call with an almost perfectly timed and weighted grubber kick that got the money. Moves like that are always worth a big drink and I bet those two had one just on the strength of it.

Just watched a peice on ABC News on Olsen Fillipaina. Possibly the first Polynesian to play in Australia in 1980 with the Balmain Tigers. He had to take a job as garbo collecting bins to supplement his low league pay. Its a job he still has to this day.

That's very interesting, considering the Winfield Cup was arguably the biggest comp in the country at the time with huge media coverage. I supposed the game was still semi-pro at the time and players still has to have a job to pay the bills. Olsen was awesome, the only player to have gotten the better of WL beside Kenny.

Graham and Kurt Sorenson never 86 series with KT retired from test football and Broadhurst retired no one else comes to mind except I would of brought Dane Sorenson in but I'm sure he was out for the season with a leg injury 🤕 he would of made the difference because no one in the auckland comp was really up to it except for young Vern Wilson he would of been ideal

1983 kiwis had the right mix of talent experience and size here we have players who were not experienced enough to match the Aussie's. Graham Lowes pick of Brent Todd was good.

Freeman was a grub and a serial pest on the field. He knew it, he still knows it. He thrived on it.

How Whitfield and the touch judge who was right there missed Sorenson's knock-on in the lead up to the Williams try I'll never know. But they did and its in the books that Darrell Williams scored.
Interesting fact: for 1987, Williams signed with Manly-Warringah and became the first New Zealander to win the NSWRL (Sydney) Premiership when he played in the centres for the Sea Eagles (alongside Michael O'Connor) in their 16-8 win over Canberra in the Grand Final.

That lewis 2nd try?, he stripped it when theres another 2 holding on to the player? How can that be a try?,. Great memories tho!

Back then that was legal to do. Lewis, Cliffy Lyons, Alfie Langer, Benny Elias....they were masters at stealing the ball like that.

@Aquatic Mullet ... and there is a certain Immortal right now who I don't think should be (pick a number between 7 and 9.....). I think his selection at the time it happened was more an FU to the other state than because he actually deserved it.

Yes. It was the 5th game played in the 4 year tournament and the second to count for the WC in 1986. It was also Australia's first win of the tournament.

Freeman lost the series for the Kiwis for mine, great player but did Fck all...he was suppose to be leading his team around, instead he spent ALL of his time and EVERY single tackle attacking the head of the Aussies...what a disgrace he was...

Couldnt agree more mate. As a kiwi freeman never had my vote. For those same reasons. I dunno if u heard at the time, but when ourmain man Stacey Jones was on the verge of replacing freeman in the nz test team, on tour in the uk, Stacey got the nod, freeman spat the dummy, and refused to get off the team bus at training. Hilarios footage on news of him sulking on the bus. He knew it was over. But unlike so many other dignified champs, he refused to be a man. Lol.

Good hard old school football. Australia are just too good, but NZ do pretty well to be fair with their much smaller player pool.

dves01 Get over it . . . the game was different then . . . mistakes were made, people got over it. Robin Whitfield was a good referee. He officiated in many tests as well as Challenge Cup Finals. He didn't take crap from the players. He officiated, he didn't player manage. There is massive difference.
