That’s a _nice_ looking ‘board! And definitely great sounding. Having different characters available is great. I love your demos on this! Excellent find! I can understand why you couldn’t resist!
I think the best way to describe the JP-8 and JP-6 is this: If you want to do classic warm, bright synth-pop tracks and lush pad sounds and big brass sounds, the JP-8 wins. But if you want to do darker, colder, sort of techno-pop or horrorwave sort of sounds, I'd say the JP-6 wins. One of the reasons I prefer the JP-6 to the JP-8 is that you can combine waveforms, have more syncronizing capabilities, and more pulse width modulation capabilities, so as a result I think it's better for bass sounds and lead sounds. But hell, they're both great machines in their own right.
I don’t know how many songs I was reminded of by your noodling on this machine. Memories came flooding back of early electro and mid 80s groove. Nicely done.

On "feel for you", I always thought those synth stabs were from David Franks Oberheim Obxa, but he said all the synths on that track were from a brand new yamaha DX1 brought into Arif Mardins studio and a moog source was used for the bass.
😄 Thank you Sir ✌! I recognised it immediately, but couldn't id it! I mixed it up with something from Paul Hardcastle who also made use of this beautiful synth.

I had one of these in the mid 80s - sold it for $600 😢. You’re right about the gnarly character (smooth Oberheim it never was) but you really know how to work with its character - your voicings and playing really make me miss it after decades - but not carting it around as I remember this being pretty heavy!
Back in the day, I remember when the Jupiter 6 came out it was supposed to be “the answer to the ones that couldn’t ‘afford’ the JP8.” BUT, here’s the thing, the JP 6 had features that the 8 didn’t have such as Velocity sensitive keyboard, and I think (I may be wrong) layer/split option. I think the 8 had just split (again I may be wrong) but the JP6 had a different character than the 8. One keyboard player I knew was going to get the JP6 until Roland came out with the Super Jupiter module (which included the 6 & the 8) with the programmer and he got that and brought a Yamaha KX88 controller. (He called himself downsizing but didn’t do very well😂) but that synth always sounds amazing. Matt, you’re the bomb!😌🎶🎹👍🏾
Wow, that was a load of nostalgia coming at me all at once! :D Thank you for that. Harsh, edgy buzzing, and also warm, muffled, comforting tones in the same package, what a surprise... I'm not a keyboard player myself unfortunately, always wished I could, heh. I do love the sound of a good synthesizer though! Pretty sure I couldn't afford one of these in good working order anyway, might as well stop dreaming. :P
Lovely demos. I used to be a bit dismissive of the JP-6 as the filter never felt right to me, but more recently I've seen the light... pity they're not the prices they were back when I didn't like them, ha! What I like about the Jupiter series is how different they all are though. The 4/6/8 are all their own thing.
This is great, Matt. I never came across the Jupiter 6 so it was really refreshing to hear its palette - you’ve demoed some really cool sounds, and I agree that as a keys player, and often orchestrator, you need different characters in your arsenal, and this synth has it in spades. It’s not cool at all, which is why it’s great!
The filter ladders sound a lot like the start of Let it Whip by the Dazz Band. In fact I can hear this synth on so many 80s funk/disco records it’s crazy. Never really delved into the 6 before so this has been enlightening!
I’d go for the Jupiter 8 as well but your arguments in defense of the 6 are spot on. Some rather similar things could actually be said when comparing the CS80 and CS70M. The 80 is the massive expressive one. The 70 the more mainstream, flexible one that might at times also come just close enough to a Minimoog or whatever. 👍
Thank you for the little funky review! :) I don't think that Jupiter-6 sounds "thin". Yeah, it has no stereo separation (and this is a bit of a miss) but the sound overall is def. analog. You can make it "stereo-fat" with plugins or a guitar pedal easily.
Something about the 6 which is hard to pin down, but it's a great sounding synth, it's edgy and rebellious. With the right mix around it, it just shines
Thin and gnarly sits much better in a mix than big and overwhelming. The UDO Super Gemini (and Super 6) is inspired by the Jupiter 6. But they've added a lot more. Including tuning stability😉 Thanks for an inspiring video, as usual. ✌✌
I am glad that there are plugins for most of the great synths. They are much more useful for making music. Analog is fun, but it will eat up all your time.
JP6 was the first "proper" synth I owned and if not the first, one of the first Roland synths with MIDI. Always loved it and the only reason I got rid of it was to trade up. I hope one day they build a software recreation to add to the library that can be used to expand the Fantom.

Thanks Mike hope you are doing well!
The filter ladders sound a lot like the start of Let it Whip by the Dazz Band. In fact I can hear this synth on so many 80s funk/disco records it’s crazy. Never really delved into the 6 before so this has been enlightening!
J6 definitely has the funk. Great demo BTW.
My man is a demon on the synth
Sounds nice. Always plenty of stuff to learn from your videos too.
Thanks 👍🏼
Yea very analogue but not much low end that’s what I mean
Something about the 6 which is hard to pin down, but it's a great sounding synth, it's edgy and rebellious. With the right mix around it, it just shines
the filter is dope i got a jp6 eurorack filter it kills for acid and grime
Thin and gnarly sits much better in a mix
than big and overwhelming.
The UDO Super Gemini (and Super 6)
is inspired by the Jupiter 6.
But they've added a lot more.
Including tuning stability😉
Thanks for an inspiring video,
as usual.
✌✌
I've owned the JP-6 since they were new. The PWM is like nothing else.
Amazing intro !! It reminds me some Paul Hardcastle music that I love ❤️
Congratulations Matt! That's a real dreamsynth!! Compared to all them new ones this has loads and loads of character!! Have a great summer!! 🙏
Lovely stuff.
Thanks guys!
Great playing! Can you do a video comparing it to the Jupiter 8?
The JP 6 was one of my faves. I miss it
Really nice synth indeed Matt!
I am glad that there are plugins for most of the great synths. They are much more useful for making music. Analog is fun, but it will eat up all your time.
Even a star can be human 😀 valuable content, wish You well and 1M subs 👌
Always wanted one of these no matter all the hate it gets
Uli, I have faith in you and your team! A 16 voice JT6, Yes please!!
Always fabulous and great insights into keyboards and playing thanks for sharing brother!!!
How you doing mate?
JP6 was the first "proper" synth I owned and if not the first, one of the first Roland synths with MIDI. Always loved it and the only reason I got rid of it was to trade up. I hope one day they build a software recreation to add to the library that can be used to expand the Fantom.
Cherry audio have a fab vst
So cool Matt! Bet Andy would love this.
Yeah squelching all over the place :)
what a great video! lovely sounds.
I have a Super Jupiter (MKS-80). I love all the jupiter synths though.
