- Despite the wind, which wobbled the camera on the tripod quite a lot and caused it to go bananas at the end, I had a nice mild day at the end of January when I seized the chance to install rear windows into the campervan.
This involves cutting the metal from the rear doors, preparing the windows and door surrounds, then glueing the windows on with extremely sticky adhesive.

Hi David, love the way you explain the whys and wherefores. Also love that you talk, almost as if you are talking to yourself, when you are doing tasks. It gives insight into how you are assessing and translating the aspects of the task. I am technologically and mechanically challenged. Hubby often explains why and what he is doing while I hold tools, and this is how I learn. I appreciate that you do the same. Totally enjoying your van build

The primer is applied to the inside of the window, if I'm not mistaken.
Well done. I don't know (nor much care, actually) if I have mentioned it, but if I make it through April next I will be 80 winters and much of that time was spent tearing stuff apart and putting most of it back together in a different (if not improved) fashion. I'll spare you all the full catalog of houses, parts of houses, cars, pickup trucks, radios (including transmitters and transceivers),....
Suffice to say that I am imminently qualified to be very impressed with the preparation and raw courage you display in your (old school use of the term) hacking your van.

There were some suspenseful moments during this vlog. I’m glad it all worked out in the end. Also I liked your defense of doing it yourself at the beginning of the vlog.
My husband and I recently got caught up on the Cruising the Cut videos, (we just found them a couple of months ago and watched a few each evening) and have started this series. I’m looking forward to seeing how the camper van turns out, but don’t want to skip ahead! Another good job done, there's no need to be too picky, the few mm of the RH window won't be noticed by anyone but you.
Your van is coming along nicely, and it will all be done pretty well, and as a bonus because it's all your own work, you'll know absolutely everything about your fit out, and you can be even more proud of your van and yourself for having done the whole project yourself, and as another bonus, no other people to pay for the work you really didn't need their help for.

Wish that I had known about such possibilities 25 years ago , when converting our ancient VW Transporter (not sure if she was a T2? was like a box on wheels😁) into a van (only to carry people in the back) according to German regulations😕
We cut, and put in windows in GB, but the whole caboodle had to be done again here😕
She ('Old Green') was wonderful for travelling, (going back to England ), but unfortunately, when living here, was an absolute 'petrol guzzler'😕
She unfortunately had to go, much to my boys' disappointment, but there you go!
Those were our 'more adventurous days'😊

a tip when using a caulking tube pierce a little hole in the end of it on the inside, makes it alot easier to push it out
Well done.
If you ever need to do something similar, check out some adhesive (kind of Velcro stickers) called scotch lock.
You stick them on the window, do a dry fit with spacers at the edges. Apply your glue or sealant and lock the Glas (or board etc) on place.
Works only if you have some spare space. We use them in a bigger version for truck and RV windshields. Cherrio :-)
I must say, I'm very impressed (even 2,5 years later). When I saw the rubber strip, I just expected a simple window that you'd put in that rubber strip, but this looks very professional, great job.
About the ear protection: I'm only 27, but already learned that you really only have 1 set of eyes and ears, so protect them at all cost, no matter how uncomfortable or silly it may look. I know a kid who didn't even reach the age of 18 before he lost an eye, because he wasn't wearing safety glasses.
I suspect the professionals do it much the same way, precisely because this style of window looks pretty good, and can’t really be off too much because it naturally falls into place. Pro just means you do it a lot, not that you pay attention to details!

Excellent work. I did aircraft sheet metal work for 10 years, would be happy to have you on any crew I ever worked on. I really applaud the idea of doing this yourself, I have always been of the opinion that we rely too much on experts...one can do amazing things with patience and diligent study...again, very nice work.

Just fascinating to watch - and you seem to have thought of everything (minus the ear defense). You sometimes give the impression of not being competent but this vlog shows the truth.

Went to a Motorhead concert in a nightclub in the 80's and my ears were still ringing 24 hours later. Proper worried for a while.
Was it at belle Vue Manchester. We were there. When we went to the car park switch on the engine and had to go and lift the bonnet to see if the engine was running as we couldn't hear it. Lol

That is a good install, you are right other than 54 k of your closest friends no one will ever know about the gaffer tape.

Do it yourself for sure. Even a slightly bodged job is worth putting up with for the satisfaction of knowing its your project and you built it yourself. Although i must say it looks like you did very well!

I have a great deal of respect for your have a go attitude. When I first start watching your (canal boat) vlogs you were clearly not comfortable with DIY and I am afraid it was a little obvious. Since then though you have had a go at all sorts of things and clearly gained confidence and skill, and most importantly you enjoy it. Bravo.
I second your call to use proper hearing protection. The damage from noise exposure is cumulative, as I know first hand from many years in metal working.
Well done with the windows - even Greg Virgo, the “Ultimate ‘go -to’ for site for diy van building” didn’t install his own windows!!

I've taken it (gingerly) down the very rutted canalside track and up to 70 on the motorway. So far, so good!

I fitted all my van windows on a single Saturday, and my ears were ringing for several days afterward, like you, I thought I might have damaged them.
I will definitely be using ear defenders next time. Really enjoying this build unfold a little more each episode, you’re doing a cracking job, and I may be taking quite a few tips away from this series to apply to my next build, so thank you.

Years back I converted a bus to a motorhome . The things that helped were research , planning and talking over the plan if I had questions and taking my time. From what I have seen you are comfortable with tools even if still learning. I think you will get frustrated at times but, when it is done you will feel quite satisfied. Good luck, Hal

A fabulous account of your glazing “feats of daring doo” to get rear windows into the van. Although I plan to go coach built you never know. Loving your almost ‘dead pan’ delivery of tongue in cheek humour: great entertainment and the useful content for those taking this kinda conversion on is brill!
The point you made at the very start of the video is true about life in general - theres few things in life that you can cock up beyond all recovery - I'd imagine making the switch to narrowboat life is something that for some people they would never attempt because they were put off by the "what if's". I admire your drive to "give it a go" - after all, you only get one shot at life and you seem to be living it the way you want, which a lot of people could learn from :). Keep up the great work.

Quite a DIYer myself. Some projects, especially the first time, Dunning-Kruger is very real. If you're not trepiditious before you start, it's probably because you don't truly understand what you're getting yourself into. Hacking a hole in the side of your van definitely qualifies!
Congratulations to you for even attempting something so important. I'm glad to hear that they don't leak. You had done a great job & if you hadn't pointed that other window being a little off I wouldn't of even noticed. Job well done.

Good Job I have ringing in my ear for working in a machine shop. At first I didn't wear ear protection but learn to wear them. Today that ringing never stops. The more wore out get the louder it gets. Always Wear Ear Protection or suffer like I do.

I don't think I could ever have done that. I would have been so nervous that I'd have had to fortify myself to the point of being as wobbly as the camera. You will be able to say, as you drive around this summer, that you did it yourself and the windows haven't fallen out. Yet.

That is a fantastic job you have done there, a very well done! And someone has already given the tip but i second it, put the tubes of bond (gunge) in very hot almost boiling water to make it easier to apply. Well done that man! 👍

Really impressive! Also, your use of accelerated footage is immaculate. I know you also sometimes use it in the CtC videos, but quite sparingly and not sped up as much as here. I've also watched another narrowboating video that started out interestingly enough, but the guy would have miles of footage rushing down the canals at warp speed, at least as much as the fastest I've ever seen you use here, until he'd get to a point where something happened he thought might be interesting to the viewer, the footage would crash to normal speed for a short while, just to be off at warp speed again for the next couple of miles! That's not the point of watching someone going down a canal on a narrowboat, is it!? The way you're using it here to speed through the repetitive stuff works really well, however, because you've already shown what you're doing, there's nothing scenic or particularly pretty about it, so you're just getting it done. Pretty judicious use of a cool feature, I'd say!

Vandemonium good idea! Definitely try putting the tube in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes before too, we found that helped 😊
I did one side window today. I put the gunge near the stove beforehand and it got so warm it came out all gloopy and floppy instead of giving me a nice pyramid-shaped line. Duh. Next time I'll use your hot water idea :-)

At no time did I doubt your ability to successfully install these windows. Well done David!
I use small plastic wedges at the bottom and on one side to ensure an even gap. The thin end of the wedges are cut away during the "dry fit" stage leaving only the correct thickness for the desired gap.
Wedges would have been a good idea. I did stuff some cardboard below the window which you can just see me doing in the speeded-up bit but I didn't have anything proper to go in there.
Very good idea using a bag around the magnet. I've never though of that. I've spent a good 10-20 minutes before, cleaning a magnet that I had used to clean something else up.
I love this one. It is funny (dive mask problems, ear pops) and educational. Thanks for a great vid.
Really enjoyed hanging out with you via video while you accomplished this project. You are inspiring me to take on some projects I might have otherwise farmed out.

Nice job David, you might want to think about sealing the edges with some more sealant so that dirt doesn't collect there and then keep dripping down the rear of the van every time you try to clean it, also spiders like to nest in those sort of places, I had them in my door mirror last summer.

Well done. I would also have been sweating at the door cutting step. It is amazing the windows stick without any clamping. I was not sure the tape would hold the windows without gravity moving them down.
Jigsaws are not noisy in wood but the thin metal will create a lot of noise as you experienced.
You may consider a Dremel style tool with small sanding drums for sanding the edges of the hole. Also consider warming up the edge trim with e.g., hair dryer to make it a little more flexible.

You are quite right, I should have thought of that. Those doors are most likely about 50 Kg each and would very hard to handle by yourself if you removed them and you are wanting to do this on your own. Might I suggest that the side windows be partially sliding? That way you could open them at night and lock your sliding doors for safety but still have an air flow? Or am I " as the saying goes" preaching to the choir here or telling you water is wet, maybe it gets dark at night? ;) ;)
I've already bought them, as seen in an earlier vlog, and one of them has a sliding panel but the other is just glass. Cheers
