  • Leo Tolstoy's perfect little novella The Death of Ivan Ilych is an expression of the author's 'conversion' at the age of fifty. He describes a society motivated by the fear of death and moved by the pride of life that they will do anything and everything to deny it.
The main representative of the view is the man we are introduced to on page one, the dead man Ivan, who in the end could not avoid what he had refused to acknowledge. Thereby Tolstoy presents us with a portrait of modern man.
