David Cayley - The Life and Times of Ivan Illich

We speak about the idea of Conviviality, what it means to organize society around our shared humanity instead of endless optimization functions, and Illich’s position on education, participatory democracy, and medical harm. We also speculate on what Illich would have made of the response to Covid. We also cover the growing influence of NGOs, the concept of Gender and centralization as an important axis in Illich’s thought.
For over thirty years, David Cayley worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Company, creating interview and documentary programs. The first of these also became the book Ivan Illich in Conversation, which remains an excellent introduction to Illich’s thought. The second became Rivers North of the Future, and his latest book is Ivan Illich - An Intellectual Journey.

The late UCLA historian of religion, Professor Kees Bolle, in his book "The Freedom of Man in Myth," uses a term "subjective reservedness" to describe the respect people have for, in the context of religion, certain, say religious, "leaders" . I can see parallels with what was discussed with the esteemed, such as doctors. BTW, I am pro religion and pro medicine.

reading your comment, I can feel how people have treated me this way when they discover that I'm a grad student in ecology. A certain reverence and deference on 'environmental issues' follows. I'm seeing in my elders (professors) a reason for living, in extracting this reverence from society at large with their position and opinion (however reasoned)

I read his book Gender. Half of it is really fascinating anthropology. The rest of it is a wall of citations of works in french.
