I loveeee romance in books but im not the biggest fan of spice cause my hot take is I feel like sometimes (not always) authors use spice as a crutch instead of developing the relationship in other ways. I feel like not having spice forces authors to find creative ways to up the tension (and i LOVE tension between couples hehe) so thanks for the recs! :D I gotta check out those slow burn holy grails
Yessss im sooo with you on thisss! Thats why im OBSESSED with The Timekeeper's Secret - Timeless Fate series! You should totally check it out! Its slow burn enemies to lovers and its like enemies to lovers done right! So good! Its dark academia, mystery, time travel and has crazy plot twists! All im gonna say is, welcome to your new obsession!
gave me the motivation to finish the gilded wolves trilogy 😭😭 i loved the first 2 and the slowburn between our engineer and historian had me fangirling just now. Also, you're an absolute icon for rewatching matt and clara's episodes of doctor who. I've watched it way too many times and adore that compilation of them 🥹🫶🏾🫶🏾
Had you read The Timekeeper's Secret - Timeless Fate series? Its a slow burn between enemies to lovers and its enemies to lovers actually done so well!
OMG! I loooove middle grade and still read it as a 20 yr old and no one ever knows what I'm talking about 😭 but its okay bc if these hit the mainstream i think it would hurt my heart. I also read the serafina series!! and I'm reading the companion series now. I kinda loved how dark middle grade got sometimes bc it felt like the authors respected out little hearts and didn't baby us lol I'd like to contribute an underrated MG series too, its called the blackthorne key series by Kevin sands and it has that slow burn romance that flowers from a tight knit friend trio.. and ahh it was dark and mysterious and medieval and so much fun bc puzzles!!
YES YES YES I WAS SOOOO HOPING CG DREWS books would make it into your list!! After you listed them in your 2023 reads, I had to read them and I fell in love so hard that I still think about them to this day (also I cried buckets but we don't need to talk about that). Genuinely your recommendation to read her books made me trust you 100% so now my entire TBR is just any recs you make lol.
I'm usually so hard into gatekeeping my favourite books, movies or songs but watching this video and also the comments this feels like such a me community- like the no spice, slow burn, character depth, touching books? We all crave those. So I'm resisting the urge to gatekeep this time! Here are a few of my MOST FAVOURITE BOOKS EVER - Unwind duology, Angelfall, delirium. These all are dystopian/sci fi/ hint of fantasy? I love these SO MUCH. One more - this is contemporary??? ORBITING JUPITER. Get your tissues ready 😭
GIRL. I JUST READ LEGEND AND CRIED. ITS SOOOO GOOD. I READ IT CUZ YOU RECOMMENDED IT. YOU HAVE NEVER DISAPPOINTED ME. anyway on topic, im also a no spice girlie
I don't know you personally, but I love you. I've kinda lost my love for reading, because of how often I try to read a fluffy book and there's spice in it- it just throws my mood off. Thank you for making a part 2! All of these were added to my immediate TBR.
You shouldn’t gatekeep, Sunny. You need to prop these up, so that they become popular and they make more 🧉🦄 Spicy Romance novels are popular because many readers talk about them 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I’m so glad that you recommended Lockwood and co! It’s honestly one of my favourite book series and def doesn’t get enough hype! I will actually never get over the betrayal of Netflix not renewing the series 😭
I ADORE no spice romances! ty for suggesting the letters to the lost book in the last one cuz omgosh I could not put it down. For the sake of you giving recs to others, I won't gatekeep mine: first of all, there's so many, but here are a few: - 100 days of sunlight by Abbie Emmons -The fifth wave by Rick Yancey (There's one scene in the 2nd book I think) - Better than the movies by Lynn Painter (Obviously)
ive added SOOO much books into my tbr list, im like SO GRATEFUL for this whole video THANK YOU. this felt like a big sister giving me life advice- 😭 also thank you for giving us your gate kept books 😭🙏
A great no-spice fantasy series with romance as a subplot is "Blythewood" by Carol Goodman. Absolutely no one talks about these books but they are *chefs kiss*. Its boarding school for girls who fight monsters, set in the 1910's, secret magic, sort of forbidden romance, and the main girly is such a good rep for the more introvert girlies out there.
I wasn't into reading when I was younger but now in my 20s, watching your videos and reading your recommendations have got me to the point where I can't go a day without reading! RIP to my sleep schedule 😆
salt to the sea is SOOOO GOOD!! i literally read it in a day!! all of ruta sepetys books are amazing. fountains of silence and i must betray you also have some no spice romance subplots!
I LOVE The False Prince! I have recently read the first book and it was Amazing! As for books that I love there is a series called the rangers apprentice that I don’t think many people know about but I Love it. So it is basically about a orphan named Will who dreams of becoming a knight but has always been teased that he is not good enough, and when none of the craft masters are willing to take him as their apprentice the mysterious and feared Ranger Halt offers to take him as an apprentice due to his natural skills to hide in the shadows and see without being seen. Some of the tropes in this 12 book series are Slow-burn romance (as characters get older) Childhood friends to lovers Sunshine student and grouchy mentor (not a romance) And last but definitely not least (sorry for the long comment) is Keeper of the lost cities it is one of my all time favourites. So it’s about a girl named Sophie who has been able to hear people’s thoughts since she was six, and then one day she meets a boy just like her and he tells her that she is an elf (more LOTR elf’s then Christmas elf) and she also finds out there are secrets planted in her brain that even she doesn’t know about and there are people willing to kill for those secrets. So as for tropes Love triangle (between main girl and two bffs) Popular boy with bad home life who is overconfident and sassy also loves teasing Quite girl and nerdy bff
I used to follow C.G. Drews and her sister when they had a blog together years ago. Then her sister studied at the same music school as my sister at uni and I used to see her at campus a lot. I love C.G. Drews heaps!!!!
YES to the False Prince 😭😭😭 the entire series is fire also if you haven't read Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale yet YOU'RE IN LUCK it's low fantasy + romance told through journal entries by the maid fmc who serves a princess imprisoned by the princess's father... and a prince gets involved 👀👀 trust me it is absolutely SO GOOD + special shoutout to Jessica Day George's "The Princesses of Westfalin" romantasy series - they're retellings of the Twelve Dancing Princesses and so forth (different for each book) that includes a lot of magic and, well, knitting. Where else will you find a male lead that knits 😭😭
THE TIMEKEEPER'S SECRET - TIMELESS FATE SERIES NEEDS TO BE ON THIS LIST! if you havent read it yet, its dark academia, time travel, enemies to lovers, mystery and has crazy plot twists! Im obsessed! Youd love it!
I read a book about a week that I CANT stop thinking about and I think it is going to be my newest holy grail it’s called Hope this doesn’t find you Academic rivals she falls first but he falls harder and I want everyone to read it!!!
Saving this so I can read some later. Love your recs! Your historical fic recs are so good! Read all of them except for Jane Austen. Also any Ruta Septys books, she’s amazing! Thanks for sharing your most gate keeped books!
About cg drews I follow their insta (haven’t read any of their books but really want to) and I think the sequels to the boy who steals houses are on their patreon also they’re putting out a like botanical horror book this fall so i guess they changed vibes a bit
The False Prince!!!! I was obsessed with that trilogy in early highschool. I have vivid memories of reading the first book in a single day the first time I read it
another middle grade in case you want one: Ivy Aberdeens Letter to the World it is a BANGER i sobbed and it has a little romance-y kinda vibe it’s so good. AND ITS QUEER ugh i’m obsessed with it
Oh my goodness the glad you exist trilogy by Kaye Rockwell is such a great ya -new adult read ,it follows a very sweet and loving friendship group in high school to college , has great anxiety and depression rep and Filipino rep . The first two books are no spice but I think that last book has a little spice 💗happy reading
Sunny, I think you would really enjoy "A Tempest of Tea" by Hafsah Faizal purely because of the slow burn romance (except it's a love triangle and I was screaming crying throwing up because she kept choosing the guy that I hated but the other guy is just *chef's kiss*). It's a heist story and the plot was questionable but that romance was something else. And if anyone ends up reading it please know there is a bonus chapter that I would actually die for soo...
Yes the Gilded Wolves! One of my favorite book series ever! The Diviners is good too but it's kind of spicy for YA. I'd recommend Counting Down With You (the best YA romance I've ever read, fake dating, shy smart girl "tough" guy) and The Unwanteds (middle grade fantasy series with slowburn, it sounds like a lot of the middle grade Sunny recommended)
! The fact that we have the same book taste is crazy because I’ve read most of the books you mentioned and love them!! So I’m convinced we are sisters ha ha!
Thank you so much for the video! I always love finding new no spice authors ❤. One I actually found recently is Sariah Wilson. Her books are amazing! I’d recommend The Seat Filler, The Paid Bridesmaid, The Roommaid, or Hollywood Jinx to start. They are fun and flirty romances that will make you giggle and kick your feet!
