If you count ionically, as you have done in the video, then for carbenes one needs to a priori know if it is Fischer or Schrock type to either treat it as a neutral 2 electron donor (the carbene), or a dianionic 4 electron donor in the case of a Schrock type system. Take (CO)5Cr=CR2 as a prototypical Fischer carbene: anionic counting (which in this example is identical to covalent counting) means that the count would be 5 x 2 (CO) + 6 (Cr) + 2 = 18 VE, but that is only because I know it is Fischer type, and hence the carbene is neutral 2 electron donor. If I treat it as Schrock type, then the CR2 fragment is 4 electrons 2- charge: 5 x 2 (CO) = 10 + Cr(2+) = 4 + 4 (CR2) = 18 VE (as in your table). But this is incorrect, since the Cr is in the zero oxidation state for Fischer systems... We get the same number, but the assignment of Cr(2+) in the ionic counting scheme is incorrect. So a better approach is covalent counting across the board, as one need not know a priori the charge assignment of a ligand. Same goes for carbyne counting (or alkylidyne).
Hey Dave, love your content. Just dropping by to ask if maybe, just maybe, we could see a future collaboration between you and Forrest Valkai who does a lot of Tik Tok stuff and appears on Atheist Experience. It seems that neither of you do many (if any) collaborations but your style and inflection are so similar I feel like it might be a really great fit and could produce some epic, informative and entertaining content. Anyway keep doing what you're doing, much love.
It's such a shame I'am still studying but the anti is going to be fun hear and ever think at a pole N/S that there's the hole bend at that very centre between magnetic field lines the iron used as the bond or fabric hole mechanics!.😃😄😁😆😅 5 Smile's
I just want to let you know you're a personal hero to me. Thanks for the lessons.
This lesson is enlightening my insight
We love you Dave-keep up the work!! ⭐
You got me through AP physics and and then debated the professor I hate the most at Rice. You sir are the best
awesome, new chemistry video!

I like your funny words magic man
All I know is that methamphetamine is an organic compound🥲🥲🥲
😊
Well explained 🎉
Thank you sir ❤
Thank you it was helpful!
Does this become a 32-electron rule for the actinides and lantanides?
i should see your chemistry playlist. Becouse i dont understand 60% of your funny words
Question: why is the alkyne restricted to donating only 2 or 4 electrons? Why not 3 since it has a triple bond?
Pleasee make video about isolobal analogy
Thank you for not shying away from the heights of your intelligence! Keep doing this type of science when you're not debunking pseudoscience!
the interest to learn a new topic is completely dead after watching this video.
King of Sciences
Can you please explain how η5-C5H5 contributes 6 electrons to a complex ?
Don’t forget the negative charge.
But can a TV BE flat?
I remember when TVs had a curve😆
How do you figure out the carbonyl groups are neutral?
great video

I would second this. Forrest Valkai is a precious, precious cinnamon bun who truly has a love for science communication.
so if an electron falls on the floor, if i get to it in 18...uh never mind
Cp always contribute 5 e not 6 as you are telling??
Depends whether you're using the ionic or neutral counting method. In the ionic method, Cp counts as 6 whereas in the neutral method it counts as 5.

God i love this topic
