Pete always seemed to do continuous snare rolls in lieu of tom fills which sounded quite dated even in 1962.

    Paul’s voice sounds fantastic

I used to feel bad that Pete was booted right before they got HUGE but after hearing this, it's obvious that he was not the right guy at that time.

That's strange, because with Pete Best as their drummer, they became Liverpool's top group. Indeed,as far back as January,1962, they topped the popularity Poll,as recorded in' Mersey Beat'. Furthermore, George Martin himself never wanted Pete Best kicked out. He only wanted a session drummer in the studio, but for the official line up, he wanted the group to remain intact.

Ringo was definitely the best drummer for the Beatles. Pete was ok for the time being. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

It sounds more as if he's following the rhythm set by the band instead of confidently leading it. That snare roll in the middle of the chorus is an odd choice and goes on too long, even if it fit. He's barely out of it when the next verse begins and he hits his accent strike late. He must have been difficult to play in front of, for sure. No wonder they loved when Ringo sat in, before the drummer switch.

Pete lacks in timing where Ringo was loaded with that gift of timing

Is there some reason that there isn't a bass drum? Maybe Pete was instructed to not play the bass? But yeah, not a great take on drums there. They were very young, sure, but Ringo at this same time was doing a LOT better than this.

On this song, he does OK when he's briefly doing a backbeat, but the rest of his playing is not helpful or interesting. What he's doing on the toms disappears in the mix because it's not crisp or authoritative. (The toms sound too dead, also, but maybe that's not his fault.)
When he does a fill, he tends to be a bit late coming out of it. He gets behind the dominant rhythm. I used to have the same problem playing drums in bands (I could hear it on live recordings), but I wasn't qualified to be a professional studio drummer.
Ringo was an excellent drummer, a couple notches above Pete Best. He could "groove" in ways that are hard for the average drummer to emulate. His beats were never just "off the shelf", they were special to each song, and his fills were spot on and interesting. It's likely that the rest of the Beatles were pleased and inspired by the difference.

Two examples of slowing down or falling behind the dominant pace followed by the other three Beatles: :35-39, and around :48. They might seem minor, but the groove stumbles. Such imperfections tend to confuse the listener and the rest of the band. George Martin heard them.

This can't be right, can it? It is very odd sounding and the drummer doesn't seem to have any sense of time. It almost sounds like me playing drums and I don't know how to play drums.

I don't understand how they even let him in the band.. It definately wasn't for his drumming.

Seems to me Richard Starkey was the better drummer, but from this one sample I can't be sure.

Pete often asks that if he was so terrible why did he last 2 years with them. That’s a great question because his drumming is simply awful.
