This being a Hollywood gig they do what they please. In reality, there's a difference between structurally bad eyesight and spending to much time doing paperwork. Also the many rules for qualifying for flight status changed as the shortages of experienced pilots increased. There are also some 'super secret' exercises that can be performed to strengthen your eyesight, but not many 'professionals' outside of the military are willing to let those secrets out.
