Its average flow rate is 6 square meters (65 sq ft) per second and its catchment area receives an average annual rainfall of 5,080 mm (200 in). .Bopath Falls is also the most widely studied waterfall in the country.
Apart from its rich biodiversity, the fall is also steeped in folklore. One such story tells how a young man from Colombo went on a pilgrimage here and when he lost his way he was helped and sheltered by a local village girl.
A romance developed between the two and she became pregnant before he left. He promised to go back but never did. Out of grief, she committed suicide by falling down. Villagers say her ghost (appearing as a floating blue light) haunts the fall.
Another local belief is that a treasure lies somewhere within the fall and a thousand human sacrifices are required to retrieve it. Bopath Falls is located in Agalawatta Village, Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat, Ratnapura District. Take the road from Colombo to Ratnapura and turn left along Devipahala Road. After 3km the fall is reached.
