As a kid, I remember liking the Missouri uniforms. The old gold and black, the helmet striping and the "M" on them I thought were tough looking. The last 20 years or so, Mizzou has changed their look so often I have no idea what a "typical" Missouri uniform looks like anymore.
I attended this game. I was a senior in high school. Absolutely one of the worst days of my Husker fan life. I root against Missouri to this day, and will forever. Wilder/Winslow/Bradley were fantastic that day. It seemed like they combined for 1000 yards. Huskers couldn't stop them, and MU won the game.
I was on the sidelines for this game, covering it for KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO. Will never forget standing behind the end zone when James Wilder tossed that Husker to the ground like a rag doll on his game-winning TD.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! One of the great games from a great football year. have wanted to record this game for a long time. 2 really great running backs. Wilder who went on to an NFL career, and Byrnes who I felt was very underated, but he made his point here and in the 78 regurlar season Oklahoma game.
That Missouri team had some talent. NFLers James Wilder, Kellen Winslow, Leo Lewis, Eric Wright, Earl Gant, Gerry Ellis, Chris Garlich, plus QB Phil Bradley, who went on to have a decent MLB career. They beat Notre Dame in South Bend to open the season and won a bowl game vs. LSU. Hard to believe looking at this game they lost four times in 1978 (though two losses were to Alabama and Oklahoma, both ranked #1 at the time). As a young Nebraska fan in 1978, I was shocked at this loss after having beaten Oklahoma and figured at the time that it was just due to letdown, but now I don't think so.
Rick Berns is from my hometown of Wichita Falls, Texas. I worked in a health club in the early 90’s and he was a member. To say I knew him would be an exaggeration, but I would visit with him. Nice guy who was kind of quiet. Looks like he contributed to Husker football.
Great Missouri uniforms. I'd say they should go back to those, but I've long since lost interest in today's game. Don't care about any of it now, but classic football here - and a big win for Mizzou.
I like how the QBs couldn't put enough mustard on the ball to hit a 5-yard out but they just casually dropped dimes 30 yards down the field in the biggest spots of the game
Jonestown peoples temple tragedy happened on this very day… while it was freezing cold in Nebraska 918 people lay dead in jungle of Guyana from cyanide poisoning courtesy of Jim Jones
This win put Alabama into the natl title game vs Penn State. Had the Huskers won they would have gotten the Lions in Miami for the natty. So thank you kindly to the Tigers for that game. Incidentally my Tide beat Missou and Nebraska in that '78 season.
Nebraska was just too beaten up from playing Oklahoma the prior week. This is not to take anything away from Missouri. Tom Ohrt was the lineman who jumped early at the goal line and forced a field goal. This was before they let a quarterback walk back and forth down the line. I know Tom and he said the play in the huddle was on one, but audibles were on 2. Sorely called an audible and Tom did not hear it because of the noise in the South endzone. You can criticize Tom all you want. But during the season, he did not allow a sack and was All-Big Eight.
Fun Fact: This was the second straight season that Mizzou HC Warren Powers beat Nebraska in Lincoln. He beat the Huskers the previous year as HC at Washington State, 19-10.
Although the best fans in football wouldn't admit it, I feel like this was an underrated rivalry (save the 15-20 years of Mizzou futility). Mizzou fans were frustrated and embarrassed losing 24 in a row, and I've never heard a Husker fan say anything remotely nice about Mizzou. So there was clear animosity between the two fan bases. I miss the tension of Big 12 Football
Ironically, Missouri and Nebraska used to be a really competitive rivalry for quite a long period of time. It wasn't until Tom Osborne came in as the head coach for Nebraska and he completely dominated us almost every year. Missouri being horrible during the 1980's and the early till mid 90's didn't help much either.
Rick Berns rushed for 255 yards in this game. How can you have a guy run for 255 yards and still lose? Jamall Lord rushed for 244 yards against Texas in 2002 and we lost that game as well. A receiver dropped a pass that would have given us the time to run out the clock.
Missouri was the better team. Nebraska had a rematch with Oklahoma but what would have been better was a missouri rematch with Oklahoma. I promise Switzerland would not have been for that. Missouri was loaded that year and at the end of the year was the best in the league. They would have beaten Oklahoma in any kind of rematch.
Easy Mizzou Fan...You may have been the best team that day in Lincoln but that was always gonna be a tough game for Nebraska to win after the emotional win over Oklahoma the previous week. As for you beating OU anywhere at any time in 1978 tells me you need to put down the crack pipe. That was one of OU's best teams.
Jim is short for James. I think they are charming, Bob Rowe played Defensive Tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals, he's funny. I think they are Mizzou guys so I LOVE em!

exactly correct.
I agree.
Wish they'd just stick with the classic look.
Yeah I used to like them, and I loved Nebraska, and the Big 8, things changed for the worse.

One of the most devastating losses in Nebraska history.
Loved Missouri's unis back in the 70s. Even their away unis were appealing.
This game got Bama back in the title game in the Sugar Bowl vs Penn St. NOBODY in Alabama expected Mizzou to win this game.

I would love to see the 1978 Missouri vs Oklahoma game. I can't find it anywhere 😢

Missouri also beat USC to open the 76 season in the coliseum, costing usc another national championship. This class at Mizzou were giant killers.

Frank Quintero one of my favorite players at Nebraska
@@flrpitflrp1965 He gets overlooked a lot when talking about great Nebraska I-Backs.
MISSOURI 20 LSU 15 - 1978 LIBERTY BOWL CHAMPIONS
The name James Wilder still makes me shudder every time I hear it. LOL
Great game for MU and we followed it up with a 48-0 win over kansas
Great Missouri uniforms. I'd say they should go back to those, but I've long since lost interest in today's game. Don't care about any of it now, but classic football here - and a big win for Mizzou.
Tommy, I couldn’t agree more. Wish Missouri would go back to this classic look and quit playing games with always changing the uniforms today

that's not what happened.
The phrase “drank the kool aid “ was born.

Wilder scored 4 TDS tying Al Bundy's record.

Is there a way I could get a DVD of this game?

The was Big 8 football
Nebraska was the first to dip if I recall.

Imagine that excuses from the Nebraska fans. Best team won that day.

Mizzou ou rematch would have been fun.
NEBRASKA would go on to lose the 1978/79 ORANGE BOWL to the OKLAHOMA SOONERS 31-24
i figured we would be in trouble but after BERNS went 80 on the first play i was like we got this..but OUR D was beat up
If Miller doesn’t fall down on that 4th and 1, I think Nebraska wins.
Was this a Missouri network. Totally unbiased 😂
These announcers are about as biased as they could be.
HUSKERS HAD NOTHING LEFT AFTER OU GAME..DONT KNOW WHY OU GAME WASNT LAST GAME OF YEAR IF WE PLAYED MIZZOU BEFORE OU WE BEAT EM
We beat OU then lose to these ijits.
TERRIBLE ANOUNCERS..ITS PHIL BRADLEY NOT BILL AND ITS JAMES WILDER NOT DAN OR JIM
Not Bill Bradley the Knicks basketball player from the late 60s?
Jim is short for James. I think they are charming, Bob Rowe played Defensive Tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals, he's funny. I think they are Mizzou guys so I LOVE em!
The color guy is a scream.
Such biased announcers in Mizzou's favor. I could hardly listen to this telecast as the pro-Missou bias was rampant
Made me want to puke
This was a Mizzou broadcast obviously.
