To say that this was a NC game from Nebraska's POV is lucid, at the very least. Yes, their only two losses were to Iowa, who went to the Rose Bowl, and Penn State, who if it wasn't for losing to a Jim Kelly-less Miami (Fla.) for the second time in three years, would have had a realistic shot at the National Title, but, still. IMO, if Clemson did lose, the AP vote should had gone to SMU (10-1), while the UPI poll should had voted Pitt #1 despite their galling loss to Penn State in their last game (B/C, in case anybody don't know, the Coaches' poll traditionally don't vote at all for teams that are on bowl bans B/C of probation). But, we all know that in both the Poll and BCS eras, it wasn't really that simple.
One minor deal here. In the coaches poll teams on probation COULD NOT be ranked. It wasn't a tradition, it was an actual rule put in place in the mid 1970's. Also I'm not sure the AP voters would have wanted to give a team on probration a national title even though they had done it with Oklahoma in the mid 70's
John Paulson I obviously mentioned that in my OP. Keep in mind also that Texas (who finished 10-1-1 after beating Alabama in the Cotton Bowl) would had received first-place votes in both polls as well had Nebraska won.
Pitt was the best team in the country but for 1 ugly loss. Look at that Pitt roster, they filled the NFL throughout the 80s with that team. Would have crushed Clemson.
Cry me a river. Mark Richt spent 15 years stockpiling NFL rosters but couldn’t win big games at UGA. If they lost a game in blowout fashion, Pitt was not the best team WHEN IT NEEDED TO BE!
I’m no Clemson fan, but they earned the right to play for the Natty by winning all their games. Pitt didn’t earn the right by losing that game so the point is moot
Here is why Nebraska would have won the National Championship if they had beaten #1 Clemson. #2 Georgia lost to #10 PItt 24-20 in the Sugar Bowl that evening(going on at the same time as the orange Bowl) and #3 Alabama had lost 14-12 that afternoon to #6 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. The ACC then(as now) did not have the greatest reputation as a football league and also with #1,2,and 3 losing the same day (if Clemson had lost) is why Nebraska would have moved up to $=#1 if they had won.
I wanted clempson to have to play Pitt. They had an offensive line that could have given pass protection to Marino.A sophisticated passing offense was what the tigers had not seen all year. A coworker of mine lived in New Orleans in 81 told me that Jackie Sherrill took a lot of heat for way the Pitt team partied all the time. The majority of them out all night the night before the game with UGa. Danny knew exactly what he was doing when he chose to play Nebraska. They were quicker than UN,and Gill was out and they would not have to worry about the pass.Danny was a master at getting the matchup to his liking.Danny was a great coach though,I wished he would have gotten a longer tenure at Arkansas. But competition definately got better. The boys took off to Baylor after Danny was out at clempson and promptly landed them on probation, but not at clempson.
***** Right... I don't think it had anything to do with a choice on Ford's part, lol. And since Clemson and Georgia had already played during the regular season, it was very unlikely that the Sugar Bowl would have considered inviting Clemson over Pitt for a rematch. Obviously, rematches have happened, but they have been extremely rare... especially back in that day.
I remember moving to Greenville, SC in 82 after Clemson won the NC. It was hard not to get caught up in the pageantry and our family is UGA all the way. Interesting they brought up the recruiting allegations at the 11:12 mark. They got hammered by the NCAA. I think they got a 2 year bowl and TV ban.
Nice Easter Eggs Statman. I'm a Spartan. The Bobfather was a Spartan. You guys will be back. Wisconsin has morphed into the Devaney/Osborne/Solich Huskers. Go back to what you guys do best. Sledgehammer football.
Also Pitt had been BLOWN out 48-14 in the last regular season game by Penn St which is why they fell to #10 and the SWC was begining to (but not completley) lose some respect as a power league. SMU COULD NOT win the coaches poll as the policy then was to keep those teams out of the rankings. UNL needed 2 teams to lose to even have a shot at the title and they did but they as is known did not win this game.
I thought Nebraska was going to 🏆. You could tell early on it wasn't going to happen for Huskers. Never understood why Big Eight Champ was at disadvantage in game against opponents used to humidity 🤔. Not best deal for Big Eight with Orange Bowl
I'm actually a true Gamecock fan(I hate Clemson), but I have watched this game a couple of times. Clemson certainly deserved the NC, they earned it. At 2:16:39, at the bottom right corner of the screen, is that balding guy wearing a red(technically garnet) Gamecock polo shirt? It's blurred, but it looks like that could be the Gamecock logo. It could be a Clemson shirt, with a shadow making the orange look darker. Interesting.
NU should have won. Got jobbed by the refs. Always happens to northern teams down south. Florida St. was given the '94 Orange Bowl too. Huskers badly out-played Bowden's boys in that one as well.
My youngest brother Juan lives in Spokane, Washington and is a disabled Army veteran. Juan calls himself a American/European Union citizen who happens to be black. Why won't the Veterans Administration Hospital in Spokane, Washington issue him medication.?
I remember Don calling the Giants 1st Superbowl win. I was rooting for Elway as a Redskins fan and Elway fan. Did not read all posts here so not sure if someone else mentions Superbowl 21?
First, there was no playoff selection committee, no BCS rankings. Typically the Big 8 champion went to the Orange Bowl. Not often would you get a true #1 vs #2 National championship game, that's why they called it the Mythical Nationl Championship. In this case, Nebraska could have won the national title if they beat Clemson based IF #2 Georgia lost to #10 Pitt, AND #3 Alabama lost to #6 Texas. Both those things occurred as Pitt beat Georgia 24-20, and Texas beat Alabama 14-12. You could argue that Pitt ranked #10 with a 10-1 record beating number two #2 Georgia could have leaped frog to the NC, but since they were destroyed on Nov 28, 1981 by Penn State 48-14, Penn State lost to Alabama 31-16 earlier in the season so it was unlikely they would have leapfrogged to the title either.
Earlier in the day #3 Texas lost to #6 Alabama in the Cotton Bowl and at the same time #2 Georgia was beaten by #10 Pitt in the Sugar Bowl. If Nebraska had beaten Clemson the #1 2 and 3 teams would have lost likely elevating #4 Nebraska to the National Title
I know I'm gonna get butchered by Clemson fans for saying this, but with Turner Gill in there, Nebraska very well might have won this game. And even if they didn't, the difference wouldn't have been 7 points.Mark Mauer was nothing compared to Gill, who would have better led the Huskers against that awesome Clemson D.

Juan Guevara No, I am not wrong Georgia and Alabama were ranked number 2 and 3. Georgia lost to Pitt in Sugar Bowl, Alabama lost to Texas in Cotton Bowl. If Nebraska would have won this game, the would have been National Champions.
Back then the bowl bids were extended to schools. They weren’t set up by a bowl committee, so there was no consideration to rankings for the most part. Plus you had firm contracted bowl tie ins then.
Well they were until they got beat at home 48-14 by Penn State. You can't lose by 34 at home and say you're number 1, Sorry John that's not how this works. Nebraska also lost at home to Penn State but early in the season 30-24. Pitt rebounded and beat #2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to finish 11-1. It was a great year for them no question, but losses matter by how much and to whom and when sadly in college football.
@@statman29neb that’s a hypocritical statement coming from a husker fan who’s team got destroyed by a mediocre program still won the Heisman and got a national championship invite.
@@johnwaffleh2p70 Wow did we jump ahead 20 years? We're talking about the 81' season. FYI I didn't think Nebraska deserved to be in the National Championship game in 2001. They didn't win their division, they didn't win their conference. Kinda like Bama did a couple years back. I didn't insult your team, heck if you had lost in the early part of the year instead of the last regular season game maybe it would have been different. Nothing to be ashamed of going 11-1 John.
Nebraska was not mentally prepared for this game because they'd finally beaten Barry Switzer's Sooners earlier in the year. That was such a huge relief for them that they could not be as mentally up for this game. Other than beating O.U. though, how could Tom Osborne conclude this was his "best team?" His 1980 team was way better.
Nebraska didn't have an injured Turner Gill for this game, I think that had more to do with them losing than the claim of not being mentally prepared. No Shame in losing to Clemson that year, everyone else did.

You can have that opinion all you want. The fact is during Osborne's reign 1973-1997, Nebraska had the best record in college football during that time and it wasn't even close he led by 25 games. What did losing to Clemson in 1982, Penn State in 1982, Miami of Florida in 1983, have to do with Barry Switzer?

I have more respect for Tom Osborne and Tommy Ford than ever before than ever I can dream of
Who is Tommy Ford?
Without Turner Gill Nebraska was at a huge disadvantage.
He certainly would have made a big difference in this game.
Pitt was the best team in the country but for 1 ugly loss. Look at that Pitt roster, they filled the NFL throughout the 80s with that team. Would have crushed Clemson.
lol they lost 48-14 they couldnt crush a soda can . WE TOO DEEP
Don.t think so Clemson would have beaten pitt
Enjoyed. Go Big Red.
Reminds me a lot of the 2016 National Championship. Go Tigers!
Jay Tiger21 but it’s nothing like the 2018 National Championship! 44-16!!!! GO TIGERS!!! 15-0!!!!
Go tigers I was 6 yrs old back then they put South Carolina on the map😆😆
WIll always wonder if Turner Gill would have made any difference.
Go Tigers!
Hard to imagine both announcers not knowing that a 4th down change of possession stops the clock.
29:33 A gagagagaggah
Obviously, rematches have happened, but they have been extremely rare... especially back in that day.
big husker fan here. mauer and the rest of the team played a good game. turnovers lost this game. nebraska's defense was great in this game.
Not having Turner Gill is why we lost
I remember moving to Greenville, SC in 82 after Clemson won the NC. It was hard not to get caught up in the pageantry and our family is UGA all the way. Interesting they brought up the recruiting allegations at the 11:12 mark. They got hammered by the NCAA. I think they got a 2 year bowl and TV ban.
QB was down at 2:17:39 before he pitched the ball. Nebraska should have thrown the challenge flag. LOL
great Clemson Defense
@ 54:31 INT call in the endzone is right
Don criqui is the man
If only we could get that defense back. With our explosive offense currently, we could go A LOT farther. Even a possible championship.
Keep an eye,Clemson's 2017 Defense might be even better than the Clemson 89-90 Defense. That was their best Defense.
56:36 - 1st cell phone at a football game.
way to notice that one, don't know that it was a first, but still very interesting.
HEHE.....
ybrix101 That's a radio..lol He is listening to the game
I'm pretty sure that's a portable radio.
@@JosephDungee LOL beat me to it. Years ago.
Nice Easter Eggs Statman. I'm a Spartan. The Bobfather was a Spartan. You guys will be back.
Wisconsin has morphed into the Devaney/Osborne/Solich Huskers. Go back to what you guys do best. Sledgehammer football.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Jeff Bryant is a beast!
Michael Slack that's why he was drafted
The Best Nebraska team ever!!
STFU
Lol to that point in Osborne’s 9 year career .. they had many better after that
Roger Craig and Mike Rozier are in the same backfield.
@ 16:39 I'll beg the differ with the Weight that the NBC has mearsrued he's over the 300 LBS mark
Kevin Mack is Fumble Machine.
Happy 32 year anniversary on Clemson's most recent national title!
Eh, its been a while since we had a defense good enough to get us there, but at least we have one.
David DeJesus 3 years later and Clemson is the kings again
chase ash and yet again this year beating Bama 44-16! GO TIGERS!!!!
Not best deal for Big Eight with Orange Bowl
this was clemson first national title
Go Clemson!!! Time for a 3rd National Title!!! Back to back!!!!
Mike Coppedge Roll Tide
Damien Kirksey we rolled the tide 44-16! GO TIGERS!
I love seeing Nebraska lose.
56:38 probably one of the first cell phones
33?
Imagen being ranked no.2 and the no.4team is playing for the natty💀💀
My youngest brother Juan lives in Spokane, Washington and is a disabled Army veteran. Juan calls himself a American/European Union citizen who happens to be black. Why won't the Veterans Administration Hospital in Spokane, Washington issue him medication.?
we will win in 2015
no you didn't but a year later you did and the 2018 season.
I remember Don calling the Giants 1st Superbowl win. I was rooting for Elway as a Redskins fan and Elway fan. Did not read all posts here so not sure if someone else mentions Superbowl 21?
I was fortunate enough to have attended Super Bowl 21. I'm not a Broncos or Giants fan either. It was a great time though!
I guess that's why Homer led the ACC in passing and was all-ACC. This comment is inane.
Im confused how 4 Nebraska ended up in the National Championship with 1 Clemson?
@@statman29neb it should’ve been Pitt
Earlier in the day #3 Texas lost to #6 Alabama in the Cotton Bowl and at the same time #2 Georgia was beaten by #10 Pitt in the Sugar Bowl. If Nebraska had beaten Clemson the #1 2 and 3 teams would have lost likely elevating #4 Nebraska to the National Title
Those stats of Jamie Williams at 38;34 are weird
How so?
statman29neb 11 NFL seasons, 11 career NFL TDS on 180 career catches for 1980 yards which is exactly 11.0 yards per catch.
Even today people can't pronounce ClemZon
Turner Gill was not the starting QB for Nebraska?
Injured.
Sadly he missed the Oklahoma game and the Bowl Game. Replaced by Mark Mauer.
I know I'm gonna get butchered by Clemson fans for saying this, but with Turner Gill in there, Nebraska very well might have won this game. And even if they didn't, the difference wouldn't have been 7 points.Mark Mauer was nothing compared to Gill, who would have better led the Huskers against that awesome Clemson D.
boondox atron looks like you survived. Lol! This was one heck of a game. I hope you Cornhuskers come back to how you used to be. It doesn’t feel right that y’all are struggling in the B10. I wish you the best of luck in the 2019-2020 season. GO TIGERS!
@@tigernate8874 sorry I was so late getting this. Hopefully we'll come back one of these. All the more, it's good to see Clemson as perennial competitors. Good luck to you guys! Mad respect!
boondox atron no worries. After all, your comment was posted 7 years ago 😂 I really sincerely hope Nebraska finally gets their head out of the water this season. 💪
The announcers are bias, Clemson this Clemson that!
wait wait i think your wrong #1 vs #4 so where in the name is #2 on heaven
Juan Guevara No, I am not wrong Georgia and Alabama were ranked number 2 and 3. Georgia lost to Pitt in Sugar Bowl, Alabama lost to Texas in Cotton Bowl. If Nebraska would have won this game, the would have been National Champions.
Back then the bowl bids were extended to schools. They weren’t set up by a bowl committee, so there was no consideration to rankings for the most part. Plus you had firm contracted bowl tie ins then.
Pitt was the best team in the country that year just saying.
No Shame in losing to Clemson that year, everyone else did.
statman29neb
1983 was Osborne's best team.
Offensively I agree, defense was sub par though too bad they didn't have the 82 or 84 defense.
Nebraska has a tremendous traditional Football Legacy that has been tarnished on recent years especially in THE Big 10 ....i am a big 8 person that is WHEN Nebraska was just an awsome program. ..there needs to be many changes in the program from top to bottom why this has been allowed to go on is REALLY sad...this is continuing to Ruin this program there should be a special highlight film made...about all the teams from big 8 days and shown as Nebraska's representation of how this program is expected to be. ...that is when conf tTITLES were won national titles heisman outland etc goes on and on....Big 12 not much now big 10 ZERO! MAKES ME SICK
In 1984 ( I think ) 3 kids from Athens ( 1 Bulldog fan, 2 Clemson ) were billeted in my family home ( eastern Canada ). One kid ( a little racist , I think ), noticed Homer Jordan playing in a Canadian Football League game. He said," I'd use a black man at wahd receivuh, or run'n back , not quahback." He was a little startled when I said "wasn't he good enough to win a national championship at quarterback?"
Clemson made it to a national because of dabi
Because of dabo
Screwed that up
I know Bubba Diggs the Clemson Tight End. Read Tom Osborne book
OU did not Have JC Watts David Overstreet etc OU LOST TO MANY KEY PLAYERS OFF the 1980 team for the 1981 team to continue there win streak over Nebraska this year

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Nebraska and Osborne never won anything until Switzer left Oklahoma. Good coach but highly overrated
It's Probation Time Again Y'all
