HI Please advise as now we have 2 diff File Server. We wanted to use DFS for them. But they are 2 different file server, some have 3 Share drive, another could have 5 share drive. Can we put this 2 server as DFS? Currently your videos is show as a new setup. What if is 2 Files server that has been live for quiet along time & they are 2 different file server for different dept
it is possible to configure dfs between two servers with different versions, such as win server 2012 r2 and win server 2019? if yes, configuration is the same such as win server 2012 r2?

A question I hope someone can help with. Getting ready to deploy 2 new file servers running 2019 standard. I followed the above video, which is great. I have 1 namespace and will have 3 replication groups. 1st RG works, but the health report shows 2 errors on site2. Inconsistent configuration detected (invalid object) and The DFS replication service is restarting frequently. 2nd RG does not work, set up with the same steps I used for 1 RG. The 2nd RG health report has an or on site1 communication errors are preventing replication with partner site2. Site2 has 3 errors. Cannot access local WMI repository and the inconsistent config and service errors mentioned above. Servers are connected over a WAN and I can fully access the remote site 2 box. Sorry for the length of my inquiry.

DFS can replicate between 2012 R2 and 2019. Adding the 2019 server following the steps below. Go to you DFS Management Console Select the replication group you want to add the new server to In the right panel click "New Member" Follow the wizard from there...
Same procedure if I am retiring an old server with 14TB of data on it (multiple drives) and replacing with 2 new servers? Migration first and then DFS replication setup??
@@pdq This is what I would make a video on, so that orgs with multiple sites or thousands of users on 1 namespace can understand how to best leverage the distributed aspect of this. Would you just add a new server to the namespace?
If the files got deleted and site1 won't push them back out, it might be a conflict. I would chack DFSRPrivate\Conflict and Deleted folder. DFSMGMT.MSC should let you see if you have anything in conflict in there. Once that is cleared up the files should replicate back out to site2
I dont normally comment on videos, But gonna tell you that was great video. Just wondering if you know how to lock files. I dont need someone editing a file on one side and someone changes the file on other side before other saves and gets out.
Matthew: To lock files you would need to do that at the file level permissions. Right click on the file and change the read-write permissions. You may consider adding sub folders with different permissions if you have a lot of file you want to limit access to. Cheers, Lex

Those are just 2 servers in out lad that we connect with RDP.

If the current(old folder) permissions were working with DFS and Deploy, then yes keep them the same.

If you are using DFS and replicating, when you retire the old machine, the namespace should refer you to the new server.

@@pdq Fantastic. I think there is some confusion on the difference between replication of DFS and multiple servers in the namespace.
