@@shreenikethanv6241 that's because Carnatic music is the original music of India before invasions. As northern part was subjected to Arabic, Turk invasions, it affected culturally. It drastically changed music as well, as it got mixed with Arabic, Persian music style and gave rise to today's Hindustani style. Now original music was like...hidden for many years but was still prevalent in southern part as southern portion was far away from invasions till 18th century. It's revival happened in present state of Karnataka by Purandaradasuru in 18th century. So it's called Carnatic style...

Age old Indian classical rap. 😉 This is Tillana. A rhythmic piece of carnatic music similar to Tarana (Hindustani music). It is generally performed at the end of the show. The lyrics parts are called Charanam. I am a Bharatnatyam dancer. Tillana is something we learn at later stage of our course. Correct me if I'm wrong. 😊

    • @asamvav

You are not wrong. But it is debated if tarana directly was the source for thillana. There existed a form prior to appearance of tarana on Indian musical scene which makes sense because Bharatnatyam or rather Margi existed millenia before the creation of tarana which is done by Amir Khusro during sultanate era. Read up books by Padma Subhramanyam and other great musicologists for better understanding.

Korbin and Rick, you are great. Looking at the way you responded to this piece, without almost no introduction to classical Indian languages like Sanskrit and Kannada, Tamil etc, on purely musical stimulus was amazing. The poet has exhibited supreme level of composition in language, with meaningful words interwoven in onomatopoeic phrases - an extremely challenging task. As if unleashing his treasure, he has used literally hundreds of adjectives to describe the glory of Krishna and his dance. At the same time, Guru Pai has done a marvelous job at setting it to such musical intricacy and training the two young disciples to make full justice to it. All that is left to be added is a worthy pair of ears and a sensitive mind... And Korbin and Rick- both of you have it. A nice reaction video- because a 'reaction' is not just something that you summarize when a performance is over, but it's how you react to moments 'while' it goes on. Thanks.

The tapping with the hands on the thigh is one of the first things you're taught in Carnatic music - its an 8-beat cycle that is used for each verse, so you'll see that each line they sing corresponds to 8 times that they tap their hands

It is not 8-beats always. The tapping are called Thaala or Thaalam. There 7 types with 5 speeds each making it 35 different types.
Each beat for every composition to recognise how many letters or words we should sing for 1 beat. In non-music terms, every tap tells us which letters or words must be sung together to make the tune complete.

Being Vedic, this is such a beautiful rendition of devotion and humility to humanity. To understand the Vedic thought is to understand, love of life and respect of all things around us, but most of all the love of art from which we can portray this. Indian music is not about money or love of fame it is about art, and achieving a greater understanding of art. The singers who you review many times, start their lives in devotion to sound as an art, as sound is the essence of life. The west has a long way to understand that meditation is not a religion, it is a form of creating and acting on sound to enhance the mind and body to function well with the essence of the universe.

Guys, Carnatic music is mostly devotional and you don’t see the most important Mridangam ( the percussion) being played in this video. He gets a lot of credit for its success. The whole song is about the Lord Krishna’s dance with the poisonous snake Kaliya, depicted so splendidly as to bring it to you visually and you can almost see in your mind’s eye all the actions and drama that are happening in the Yamuna River. Kudos to the composer for translating all that in a song and for all these amazing artistes for bringing it to life so all of us lay people can enjoy glimpses and relive that divine dance of the Lord.😀🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for commenting on my suggestion. Very kind of you. The beats that they were playing with their left hand is called Thaalam or Taal. They are used to measure the number of notes in one line. There are many different kinds of taalas in Carnatic music. Just like a poet who keeps track of the metre of the poem, the singer keeps track of the notes using the Taala. I loved Rick's observation about Tap dancing. Yes, here the sounds of 'tham thom' that you hear constantly in the song are actually rythmic sounds used to express the movements of the Lord's feet.
