      My go to is a flintlock. Black powder isn't the hardest thing to make, you can get a stockpile of flint rn for a decent price, and for ammo all you need is some lead. Wheel weights are made of lead and it can be melted and formed into balls with a cast and a campfire. For your patch you just need cotton, and there would most likely be some ruined clothes that are 100% cotton you could use for a patch in apocalyptic times.

The thing is eventually you will run out even if you have a thousand cases for your rifle or pistol, you can normally only reload them around 10 times each, a lot of times less, bed you get case splits and head separation. If running black powder, then corrosion will shorten case life. A flintlock will run the longest, as you could make powder if you could find it make the components. Smokeless powder will be as limited as primers and even less compatible across different calibers then primers. For instance, large rifle, magnum and standard large pistol can all be used in a 45 Colt pistol or rifle and 45-70, but W296 can not be used in a 45-70. Unique can be used in both though. What I am getting at, if Armageddon happens, eventually most people will go back to the bow and black powder. A few chemist may make smokeless or semi smokeless and maybe even certain priming compounds, but I doubt it as the trade routes will not exist. You may have enough for your lifetime, but your children or grandchildren will go backwards, before we go forward again. And who knows, we as humans may even go a different route and in 2000 years they will dig up our guns and will try to figure out what the hell it is.

      Unless you are so incredible that you can hit the voice box every single time, you aren’t going to pull off FarCry shenanigans. Spoiler, nobody’s that good. You probably won’t instantly kill somebody with a single arrow, either. They might die from bleeding out soon after, but the impact of an arrow is not usually enough to kill a man outright. You shoot a guy with an arrow, he’s going to scream, now everyone in the vicinity knows you’re there. They even have a literal arrow pointing in your direction since the fletching will be pointed at your location. An arrow is also slow enough to be tracked by the human eye, meaning your second shot is certainly going to give away your position if the first one didn’t. In the time it took you to hit one target, draw, and fire again, the enemy has had time to call for reinforcements, assess the situation, and determine your location through deduction or by seeing your arrow traveling on the second shot.
      The “silence” of bows is greatly overrated by video games and Hollywood. Whether you have a gun or a bow, you only have a short amount of time to do things before the enemies in your area figure out your general location. The only sounds you should worry about are sounds that can be heard by larger groups of enemies that you are trying to avoid while you engage the smaller local group. If you ambushed a group of people with a modern rifle, you could incapacitate several people before they knew where you were, and you can do so at a much longer range. If you have a suppressor, you can kill your flash signature and make it even harder to find you even though they’ll still hear shots. You can also fire on the move, making retreats and relocations easier and safer for you without sacrificing lethality. If you’re a good shot and hopefully have someone else with you, you can dispatch that small group, get your Intel, ammo, or tech that you need, and move on before you are noticed. Speed matters a lot more in that scenario than staying sub-sonic levels of quiet. There is also sub-sonic ammo for guns, so a bow isn’t even necessary for that in every case.

    • @opietaylr
      @opietaylr Год назад +10

      @@kolbywilliams7234 actually, if you shoot someone with an arrow in the chest, it's highly likely to cause a pneumothorax. The person would be struggling to breathe so much that speaking or yelling or making any other noise than trying to take in a breath would be nearly impossible.

      @@opietaylr
      They’re still going to thrash around, which can be quite loud. They might even discharge their weapon, which defeats the purpose of using a bow in the first place. It’s also not guaranteed that would happen depending on the type of clothing, armor, angle of the shot, etc. Besides that, a collapsed lung is not necessarily an incapacitating injury. People have survived, and even fought, with only one functioning lung due to an injury. Will they die if it is not treated? Probably, but it is not a guarantee that they are out of the fight, or unable to respond.
      Too many maybe’s to be worth trying if you have access to decent firearms. Speed, lethality, and the element of surprise matter much more than being absolutely silent because it is nearly impossible to do so. Bows have their place, but in the context of modern warfare and recce scenarios, guns reign supreme.

    • @Caspin_1
      @Caspin_1 Год назад

      @@kolbywilliams7234 You know what? You're absolutely right! It's statistically unlikely that would ever happen, with what David is saying it might be possible as HistoricalArchery does say in this video that it could be fatal even with body armor, so the question is how many shots can you hit? And how many hit vital areas are you likely to hit? If they are indeed wearing some sort of armor it would make it significantly harder to silence them instantly. Most people are garbage at using a bow (Except for me because actually practice quite a few weapons/martial arts styles including archery and even then, hitting a moving target with an arrow is insanely difficult for me.) Meanwhile, subsonic gun ammo would be perfect for that sort of thing. The only thing I think is a glaring flaw with using that sort of thing is that subsonic ammo is insanely expensive and less manufactured. I think it best to just use a pistol with a silencer instead if you want to be quiet and cost-efficient during an apocalypse.

    • @kolbywilliams7234
      @kolbywilliams7234 Год назад

      @@Caspin_1
      Subsonic ammo is almost exclusively shot with suppressors. You don’t normally fire subsonic ammo without one because the explosion of the bullet is still loud and defeats the purpose of using subsonic ammo. It’s the only way to actually shoot silently. Even if you had a suppressor that managed to make the gunshot virtually silent, normal bullets break the sound barrier and you will always get a loud crack because of it. Suppressors are still quite loud. Hammer a nail into a two by four and you’ll understand how loud a suppressor typically is. They are used to hide the flash more than anything. If we are in an apocalypse, people will be using hand made cans. Those won’t do much for sound suppression.

      A bow is only as quiet as whatever you hit with it. Unless you are hitting their voice box every single time (not realistically possible), a person is going to scream because an arrow doesn’t normally have the velocity to just kill a full grown man outright. Screams are really loud. You’ve alerted everyone in your vicinity to your presence and arrows are slow enough to be tracked with the naked eye. Your second shot is going to be seen by someone and they will have your position. Not to mention the fletching/shaft of your arrows will always point towards your general location, giving a visual clue to your location with every shot.
      With a modern semiautomatic rifle, you could incapacitate 3 or 4 guys before they even knew where the shots were coming from. The added benefit of killing your flash signature with a suppresser makes it almost impossible to determine your location by sight in certain conditions, meaning they are relying solely on sound. A rifle is also capable of reaching targets from longer distances, making hiding and avoiding detection easier while being a more difficult target should it turn into a gunfight. The bows “silence” is almost always highly overrated because of video games and movies.

    A wise yet troubled man once said "Guns make killing too easy"
    In my opinion they do have their use in an apocalyptic situation. Guns are extremely effective yet loud. Not to mention basically everyone will be trying to get them and ammunition for it so it's only a matter of time before there is no more ammo or you become a walking target for those low on ammo. Bows are quite and can be just as lethal if you're precise. They are relatively easy to obtain or make and so are arrows. But lots skill is required to use them even a tiny but unlike guns and you need the strength to even pull it back. What I would suggest is carrying a bow, and a pistol with a decent magazine size or one that takes a variety of ammo types. For silent takedowns and hunting use the bow to conserve ammo and for emergencies and situations where the threat is already alert use the pistol. Also try and use a variety of arrows and items that pair with them well.

    A lot of people see "bow vs gun" and think of two people facing off.
    But real situations provide more nuance. As always, METT TC dictates.
    But arrows can get through sandbags. They can get through armor rated for pistols. They're quiet. The right broadhead can disrupt a massive amount of tissue.
    All things to weigh, but yeah. If you can have both, have both.

    • @whyareusobad3528

    another point: once they run out, bullets require a bit of industry to produce -- you need a chemical process to make the NC for gunpowder, cut the grains to the right size (or risk blowing up the gun), etc. to say nothing of primer & casings.
    biggest tools arrows need are a saw and hand plane. So a 'realistic' setting may have people saving bullets for when they're really needed... or just using muskets lol.

If you're careful how you hold the arrows you can grab and draw with the same motion. Comanche archery is sick. I personally would use primarily the bow and pistol to save ammo, mostly still bow if I can get good enough at the bow and switching to the pistol or rifle. Great thing about bows and black powder is you can make that ammo relatively easily compared to finding ammo when its scarce.
