  • In an exclusive interview with GeoBuiz, Chris Sheldrick, CEO and co-founder of what3words explains the idea behind 3 word addressing system.
We have named every 3mx3m in the world with unique combination of 3 words.
Geospatial Start up of the Year is valuable recognition for What3Words.
The Idea behind what3words was to use words 3 words as it is easy for people to grasp.
We use latitude and longitude with our algorithm to generate 3 words addressing.
We do not use any address or pass code or anything which is much bigger then 3 meters.
What3words is being used postal service companies of Mongolia and the World Bank in Tanzania.
People expects and demand everything in their life to be precise accurate location so important in today’s world.
Whats3words will launch a product very soon which will have voice records for three words.
We are looking for collaboration and integration which could bring us more consumers in more countries.

Struggled with Lat/Long? Oh I see, it's numbers and you know how hard they are! Look, you want to go to 27.223N 59.722W and you are at 25.725N 60.2W you need to go NORTH and EAST! No brainer!!!!! Now lets say you are at Salad-Tree-Ape and you need to go to Tower-Fast-Open...........which way do you go???? Are you even in the same hemisphere? No way to tell. There is NO CORRELATION of the words to position as there is to numbers. That's why we use them. This absolutely has to be a hoax/joke.

Absolutely right!! It's complete idiocy and I'm starting to think the people that keep defending it in the comments are shills.

Agreed. Good concept, if there was some semblance of order. A C E G etc words...all. northern latitudes, B D F H etc words all southern latitudes. Second word is east/west, relative lettering again. Something like that. I could maybe see an open source, common sense, reasoned approach being used to generate something which is as easy to remember/convey as words, but as practical as numerical coordinates, but I still don't see it being more practical, in the end.

No matter what reason for creating the algorithm can have only one use, that is by AI weapons, smart bombs/missiles etc. The idea that it can be uses for tracking pandemics etc. with over 25000 addresses per square mile, get serious. But for AI and guided weapons, imagine carpet bombing where each bomb goes to a different 3 word address, now we have a much better killing effect. .

Still based on gps, which changes with continental drift on a year by year basis. Then there is the underlying risk that the US Congress might stop funding maintainence of the gps satellites.

What good does a 3 meters accurate addressing system do you when modern, ubiquitous, handheld GNSS is only accurate to 30 meters, even with a clear view of the sky? Is the user supposed to list multiple potential w3w addresses to account for that drift and discrepancies between devices?

Mike Trieu GPS hasn't been 30m in years. It's 3-4m.

The problem and banana cups of fishy back jabs have horse pickles up and yellow flash pockets, creepy of belch, obviously.
