    RAM suction cup mount for the camera: www.amazon.com/RAM-B-166-202AU-Ram-Mount-Universal-4-Inch-20/dp/B003ASPH48/
    Lens skirt for glare: www.amazon.com/Lenskirt-Larger-Anti-Reflection-Portable-Flexible/dp/B018WNFLH8
    you could take 30s exposures no problem (during times of no turbulence). I've used the ram mount to an airplane window for timelapse and it holds a midsize DSLR no problem.
    I guess I need to try booking more red-eye flights!

    Welcome to Hungary! While you are here I recommend that you check out the "PARK OF STARS IN ZSELIC" that is one of the least light polluted places in europe(It shoulld be better than an airplane).

    Could you mask out the blurred earth to keep the sharp city light details as well? While you lose the feeling of flying on the airplane, it takes out some of the hectic busy nature that the "long exposure" gives

      Maybe try to use DaVinci Fusion 8 or DaVinci Resolve 12.5. It has free version and tracking and stabilizing tools included ;)

    Great tutorial! Do you think 50mm on and apsc sensor would be too long for this? What focal lengths would you recommend?

  • @YensR
    @YensR 8 лет назад

    Came here from dpreview, really nice!
    I'm using some stacking as well, not at your high level though and only with stationary cameras ;)
    I do notice in 19:44 for example some stuttering in the streaks of the clouds. I guess this is due to the "blackout" time of the camera, between the end of one exposure and the start of the next? It is very impressive though how small of a problem that is, as the exposure times are rather short and hence the relative effect of blackout time should be rather large - the A7s must have a really short blackout time!

    Hey Ian ! Do you think it's possible to stabilize the camera with a tripod or bag of rice ? And is it autorized ? I take a flight for the first time in one month and I have to try this technic ! ^^

      Odd, usually they don't take that long to release the update for compatibility. My friend is using his a6300 on LR cc just fine.

    Whats the difference between a mean and median filter? (You used a median filter in your other video)

    • @wandererstraining
      @wandererstraining 8 лет назад +1

      Mean is the average of the values for a given pixel of each image, while median is picking the pixel value that comes up the most within a bunch of images. So if you have a bunch of images and one had something obstructing parts of the image, that obstruction would influence the result of the mean, but not the result of the median as it would be filtered out.

    • @wandererstraining
      @wandererstraining 8 лет назад

      ***** Very smart to use mean instead of median, in your case. I don't think I would've thought of it. Or I would've come up with something more complicated, like using median to reduce noise and then layer the lights with brighten only since bright parts of images are usually less noisy looking.

    Thanks for a great tutorial mate ! But if you allow me I'd like to point something : as soon as you export your sequence into JPEGs you drastically reduce the quality and information of your files, so you should at least export to a PNG sequence, or if your computer can handle it, as a TIFF sequence. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if you chose to export to JPEG at the end of the process, but since you use Photoshop and Lightroom again afterwards, you know...

    Hi Ian, amazing photos and videos, absolutely brilliant! Thanks a bunch for sharing the knowledge. I had a question for you. In another video about stacking to reduce the noise, you recommend the use of Median stacking mode, while here you suggest the mean stacking mode. Can you shed light on when to prefer which?

      What lens did you use? You said you opened up to 1.8, so that rules out the Rokinon 14mm F2.8. Were you using the 24mm 1.4 or do you have a new favorite lens? :P
