  • democracynow.org - Ava DuVernay’s recent Netflix documentary, "13th," just picked up three Critics’ Choice Awards and is on the Oscar shortlist for best documentary. The film chronicles how the U.S. criminal justice system has been driven by racism from the days of slavery to today’s era of mass incarceration. The film is named for the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery with the exception of punishment for crime. Ava DuVernay’s previous work includes the hit 2014 film "Selma," which told the story of the campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to draw the nation’s attention to the struggle for equal voting rights by marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in March of 1965. With "Selma," DuVernay became the first African-American female director to have a film nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards.

    Great Film! Must See! The House I live in is another great exploration of the systemic racism of our police force and Justice system. Be active as what's coming next will be like nothing we have seen before.

    People like Mr Trump walked among us for a very long time. Such is the 'nature' of homo-sapiens. Christopher Hutchins would say, 'having the frontal lobe to small.'
    Sad reality is, there are now 50 million of them out in the open. And that is scary.

      Conservatives generally lack empathy and the both sides model that media follow has lead us to this point. Moreover, even the likes of the BBC are trying to silence progressive voices.

      My take on the politicians in general is this. Longer they stay 'on the job'
      more corrupt they get. While population is getting poorer and poorer, these guys are getting fatter. It has been said many times;
      People 'deserve' government they elect!

      !all be damned I heard that conservatives are really metal skin robotic creations dripping motor oil who lack human empathy and dont have mindful feelings, familys,children,or human needs of any kind because their truly non empathetic machines,incapable of human interaction!! What the fuck, is this! SCIFI???!!!!!!!!!

      Conservatives understand empathy but we also care about what works. If you want to see “progressivism” on a large scale just look at California. Place is a dumb and slowly going to crumble. Failed policies to try to correct people after the damage is already done. High taxes, ridiculous cost of living, astronomical crime and extreme homelessness. Progressives idea of “fixing” problems is just reverse engineering. Oh not enough people who look like this at a school? Let’s lower test scores. Too many people who look like this in jail? Let’s get rid of the laws. All their policies fail because they don’t get to the root of the problem. They make things worse.

    Great documentary but little to no criticism of Obama on this very matter of mass incarceration when his record is actually atrocious. I suspect Ava DuVernay's "proximity" to Oprah may have something to do with it...

    Apparently again according to black people white people have never been incarcerated and were innocent and spent multiple decades in prison... Poor black people having to experience the same things in life that people of other ethnic groups have also experienced throughout history and present times.... They somehow believe they are unique to the cause. Every group in history has had ancestors that were enslaved, everyone group as had a slave owner, every group has experienced torture, beatings etc... Every group has and still does experience poverty, Every group has experienced police brutality, racial profiling or been killed, every group has experienced discrimination, every group has experienced eminent domian, every group has experienced genification, every group has experienced gerrymandering,, every group has experienced having one of their own become a serial killer, a mass murderer, job loss, lack of affordable housing, homelessness, joined the military, everyone came from the same ancient ancestor, everyone's ancestors came from Africa, every group has been under the rule of thumb from the rulers at the time of the pharaohs, to the Romans, and many other rulers around the world. Every group has experienced segregation,Every group has experienced racism, power has nothing to do with racism, that is what black people had included many decades later in dictionary to fit the narrative to their claims to exclude them from being racist because they need this magical power in order to be a racist meanwhile at the same time being the actual racist... hidden behind the power concept they.claim to not have and yet they have the power to have the Webster dictionary to change the meaning of words they needed to fit the systemic racism, white supremacy, white privilege, segregation, discrimination etc.... etc...Who has been the same group of people around the world who have been on earth the longest but has progressed the least as a whole with 1.7 billion black people just in Africa not including around the world. And yet apparently it's always seems to have been someone else fault to the reasons why black people lag behind the rest of the world.. It can't be the world that is the cause of the failures of black people if every group has had the same experiences in life at some point in time. Black people are unique in a couple of ways they believe they are really unique to life they experience and they are the only group that generation after generation continue to be victim hood mentality people. When everyone else has moved passed the evil deeds done to our ancestors that none of us today even think about because we were born hundreds of years later and don't even know who those ancestors even were.. We just know what others have told us to believe about our ancestors history that may or may not be true facts or mythology... All we can do is live for today and how we will survive as a nation. Because contrary to what some may believe when the damage of the ship we all sail on together sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor then it's we who all sink together. If the majority fails then we all fail, lose what we worked hard to achieve and destroyed life as we knew it. I hope that when it's our time to be judged about what history we played in the the future generations lives as they know it . I hope they just skip over us. We are an embarrassment to the human race. We will be the laughing stock of our future generations of people. to come. They will declare it has no educational value to the education system because we all are an ignorant group of all people
