After this scene, Crowley goes to the creche, finds the guards crushed to a pulp and the babies gone, he then realises he killed a regular shifter and the Alpha pulled a fast one.
Sometimes you need to torture somebody to find out they know nothing or will say nothing. Too smart, too stubborn, too dedicated or... a sinking feeling that they have something more to lose than their own death or torture. What Crowley didn't get to, and knew he'd never get to, was likely that the Alpha knew the Leviathans in purgatory were top dogs. One of the Leviathans, Edgar once said he knew Eve. He diminished her, colorfully, and the Alpha's were her children. It's very likely that this head shifter knows that Leviathan are all that's truly in Purgatory - the souls are tainted by their presence. You can't tell Crowley about the Leviathans - for he might decide to release them specifically, or tell someone else, and telling them there's a creature beyond all others... if it wasn't Crowley, it'd be someone else who'd go hunting for them. You don't talk about Leviathans and you don't let them out. Worse, Eve had a hold on people. She managed to amp up the bloodthirst of even the most dedicated vegan vampires to levels they couldn't control. Eve's control was absolute - and likely, over centuries, that control and dominance asserted over her "children" was not only physical, but had become totally and emphatic dedication. Crowley very likely suspected this from the start and was simply looking for confirmation, and this creature's silence in the face of adversity confirmed it. Leviathans are top dogs - scarier than torture, annihilation and the destruction of his own species. Crowley was always looking at all the angles, there's many times where his actions don't strap up to his words. When they go to see Death, Crowley suggests going for pizza. Dean writes it off. Later, Crowley tries to signal the pizza joint to Dean. Finally he pulls up alongside him and downright tells him, realizing that Dean won't care HOW Crowley knew Death would be in that specific pizzeria... even before they went out... and why Crowley would want to be there, but not close enough to talk or interact with Death. Moments like this are never brought up in the show, but there's many times you can see Crowley spinning wheels that make little to no sense - tantalizing trailing ends of him not sharing information, or manipulating to ends we never even think to ask about. Hopefully one day if they ever pick the show back up, they'll acknowledge Crowley's machinations very likely exceeded everyone's wildest imaginations. Meg's character said it best... "When are you going to get it? Crowley's ALWAYS the one to be afraid of."
I think Alister was the perfected torturer since he trained and made Dean break, Crowley I think was just Liliths trusted and strongest Crossroad Demon.
@@BigMac8000 I would agree Leviathans would level everyone as they did with the angels, I definitely think Eve was the strongest who even they despised by Edgars tone, And after what she can do, and even her son the Alpha being able to fight off Edgar whos possibly the strongest Leviathan depending on how You look at Dick (Not literally)

It's the same concept as with the Leviathans that season, really old monsters can't be harmed by anything found in nature, or at least nothing that's laying around for the mining.
