The tablet was sent but it supposedly went unread and was put into storage until the king could read it. Before that happened the sea people attacked and burned the palace to the ground, the heat causing the tablet to be fired, preserving it.
He could already make a steam engine with the tech level he's at. The only reason not to is because that's not how we did it in history and this is supposed to follow historical advancement.
You know I never thought it before but im pretty sure getting a hold of Lindybeige would've been a great help, He's a library of knowledge on the ancient world and he's already made his own bronze equipment and even have a his own set of Hoplite armour.
You need an army of guns to get rid of bronze age artillery, specially on a 1v1 cuz they wouldn't recognise a gun as a threat until you shoot it ans if you do well then you'll just arrowed down lol

You should do an episode where you meet up with the guys at the channel "That Works" they used to work for man at arms and kinda got screwed there not really sure the specifics but they're great guys and really know what they're doing when it comes to blacksmithing/historically accurate blade smithing.

Try cut through a spear that isnt solidly braced against something. Most of the energy would go into moving the spear and not that much into actually cutting through the shaft

And this was just the contextual pre-amble. But I think it would be more accurate to say that Homer was depicting his contemporary world, roughly c.9-8 BC and layering it onto pseudo-mythological events that took place nearly 400 years prior to his life, if he ever existed. I only say this because a lot of the material culture described in both of Homer's works is pretty accurate to the 8th century BC, with some elements from the 12th-11th c. BC.
