I remember the change from Charing Cross to Embankment in the 1970s but I hadn't realised all the plethora of name changes before that ... It sounded like a cross between Sir Humphrey Appleby and 45 Dollar Bid (Auctioneer). Actually it's sometimes useful to remember the old names; if you go down the Trafalgar Square entrances you know they are close to the Bakerloo but far from the Northern, and vice versa at the main line station. Maybe you might add something one day on so-called "Monument for Bank" and the infamous "Escalator connection" (the Northern Line platforms at Bank are closer to the District than the Central; to get between the last two is two short escalators, some long corridors and the whole length of the Northern Line platform). Often wondered if Tube maps or info could show which inter-line changes are really easy (cross-platform) and which are really difficult and tedious ...

The "new" Northern Line station platforms (mentioned at 3:31) which opened at the same time as the Jubilee Line arrived, are actually the old Strand platforms. The closure of Strand was always intended to be only temporary (originally 1973 to 1976), but lasted until 1979 due to delays. The closure was necessary was because the escalator shaft from the new "Charing Cross" booking hall had to be driven though Strand's existing lift shaft. A similar closure to link the Bakerloo's Trafalgar Square platforms into the new Charing Cross complex was not necessary, as that station's access already had escalators, which were installed before WW2. Today the old Trafalgar Square booking hall acts as a 2nd booking hall for Charing Cross, but was closed for about 3 years for refurbishment in 1979, after the new Northern/Jubilee ticket hall opened, reopening around 1982.

If memory serves (which it increasingly doesn't these days) the original route for the Fleet Line (and who else wishes they'd kept that name??) was to continue after Charring X to Aldwych, and then make its way to Fenchurch St. Thus saving Aldwych from being utterly pointless AND finally connecting Fenchurch St with the Underground. I loved the tidyness and completeness of this, and so renaming the Fleet AND rerouting it was a personal double blow to me that I have still not fully recovered from...

Embankment station is a quarter of a mile from Charing Cross junction itself. Charing Cross station is halfway between Charing Cross junction and Embankment station.
Embankment's name is correct because it's on the embankment. Charing Cross station's name could be one of several things based on where it is, the local area it serves, Paris-style - the area it goes to (Kent), or like Waterloo, name it after a battle, Agincourt for example.

In 1976 my then girlfriend and I had our photos taken in the booth at Charing Cross/Embankment on our first trip to London together. We have been together ever since and married for over 30 years. I still carry the (tattered) photo. So far, so romantic...but I can't remember the exact date and you don't specify WHEN in '76 the name changed from C.C. Embankment to Embankment. So I still don't know exactly where we took the photo :)

it could have been worse: they could have dragged in the less well known and wholly unrelated Charing Cross in Glasgow

Perhaps, as a public convenience, they could rename all stations Cheltenham, except for Cheltenham Racecourse, which is good for the trots.

Do you often stand confused waving your cheque book at a river bank? One involves the Bank of England and the other a bank of the Thames.

It´s really sad that there´s no "Trafalgar Square" today. Nelson would absolutely deserve the honour. I guess he has to be a national hero to you british people.

Keeping "Trafalgar Square" would have made a lot of sense. For those answering tourists' questions, "Which station for Trafalgar Square?" must be second only to "Which station for Buckingham Palace?"

Wow! That was epic Jago! Thanks for putting this video together, and especially for the explanation. I think I kay have somewhere an old tube map which belonged to my late dad, which shows the Bakerloo Line Trafalgar Square, the Northern Line Strand, and the District and Circle Line Embankment Stations. All pre-Jubilee Line too, so interestingly north of Baker Street, where the Jubilee Line nows runs to and from St. John's Wood, shows originally as being part of the Bakerloo Line. That in itself would make a great video (i.e. how that part of the Bakerloo Line was separated to make the Jubilee Line).
Anyway, this history of the Stations in the Charing Cross, Embankment, Strand, Trafalgar Square area, is amazing. 👏🏾⭐👏🏾
Special prizes to those who actually try and interchange between the Northern and Bakerloo Lines at Charing Cross. You can get some good pedometer mileage in there...
