      We need to let this franchise die.

      Halloween 2 was the best because of the year it was made. A shot-for-shot remake today would be terrible no matter how much or how little money they threw at it.

    The offscreen kills really bugged me in this movie. There were just way too many. The couple, the two cops, the lady with the hammer, the journalist lady, the people at the gas station. Way too many kills you don’t see.

    • @grandesgraveyard
      @grandesgraveyard 5 лет назад +8

      Daniel Milburn No but it’s a fucking cop out to use that many off screen kills in a slasher movie. This is a more competently directed movie then the rob zombie movies. I’m not asking for random rape scenes I’m asking for them to show him kill that women with a hammer. Like in Rick Rosenthal’s Halloween 2. Show me him killing the cops, the young couple etc. slashers have an easy formula. It’s boobs blood and mayhem. You have to show the majority of your kills on screen.

    • @sightseeing7993
      @sightseeing7993 5 лет назад

      The kills don't actually matter that much. And there's two 'offscreen' kills in the original, that are as 'offscreen' as the podcasters is. His sister and the mechanic.

    This was way way over hyped i was sooo disappointed in it and my expectations was way too high and i should have known better. The movie totally lacked any kind of suspense or atmosphere and im sorry but the original Rick Rosenthal Halloween 2 blows this new one completely out of the water. I finally saw this recently and I agree wholeheartedly with your opinions on it. This is easily one of the most overrated horror films in recent memory. It's boring, it's not anywhere near as clever as it thinks it is, and it's ultimately fucking pointless. This is Now That's What I Call Halloween 40 Years Later. Way too many lazy homages to other films in the franchise that is trying to ignore and retcon, ridiculous attempts at humor and levity that are pure cringe, and despite some decent practical effects, a good score by Carpenter, and nice atmosphere and direction, it's a generic lame take on H20 with all of the awful touches present in most of Blumhouse's worst films. I don't understand the hype at all. This film is just as bad as the Rob Zombie films to me but in a different way. The boring one.

    I don't believe Laurie Strode would have a batcave bunker with guns and traps in her house after 40 years. Like, taking Halloween 2 out of the picture apparently, only the traumatic events of Halloween 1978 happened with the killings of her friends, and then she wounded Michael a few times then he got shot off the balcony. For all she knows, he could've wandered off and died from blood loss. Even if he's not dead, he's locked up. It's not like Michael is looking for Laurie when he gets free. But after 40 years, she decides to have a batcave house on the off chance that he'll come looking for her when she was the one that went looking for him. I get going out to find him and kill him to stop him from killing anyone else, but I just find it hard to believe that she wouldn't try to move on. I think the PTSD from H20 is more believable. We'll just say she's insane now.

    I saw this when i was on my way home from Santa Fe's comic con as my mom and her friend Sal went to Las Lunas theaters as they went to see hotel movie and i went to see this as i'm glad i didn't pay any money for this.
    It's nothing but a half-assed sequel with poor writing, poor scares, boring story and steals from Halloween 2 1981/4/H2O which are all better than this and almost not as bad as 5/Resurrection/Zombie's 2 and as lame as 6/Zombie's remake. Horrible movie! i put it on par with Zombie's 1 and 2, Resurrection and 5 being one of the worst halloween films! poor writing and all, this was a waste of money for me! i'm done, i'm fed up with this franchise, to me it ended with H2O and i don't need a fake Halloween 2 when i got the real one at home on blu-ray in my boxset as that's the real Halloween 2 to me from 1981. Also ripping off H2O, 4, 1978 and 2, it's not homaging it's just stealing from the other films.
    This one is just a sloppy money grab with no soul/passion or likable characters, even Jamie Lee Curtis was no help as she was haggard and did this for a paycheck and for money. I think it's time we bury this franchise! no one asked for this sequel. Stop beating this dead horse already! let it rest in peace as Michael earned his retirement.
    To have horror get out of the shitter in the mainsteam is to take a page from the independent studios and independent horror films and foreign horror films with stuff like It Follows, Housebound, The Babadook, Tragedy Girls etc. stop remaking great horror films that don't need to be remade like Poltergeist, stop making sequels to worn out horror franchises, stop prequels etc. independent horror films are out from the shitter known as mainstream when the mainstream should get out of the shitter, look for independent or foreign and say "fuck the mainstream" sometimes as sometimes there is surprises like A Quiet Place etc. and when i'm talking mainstream i mean shit like Poltergeist remake which thankfully bombed and Insidious 4 which didn't do well and dunno why Ouiji a hit, i'm glad people went to see It Follows and some people support that. Enough too much PG-13 stuff like Ouiji but A Quiet Place was excellent and IT was an R rated hit. Remake little known films like Blood Beach or Lifeforce rather than classics like Poltergeist which thankfully bombed but Suspiria looks nice and should be a good remake that is trying something different than be a xerox copy like Poltergeist. They need risks again, take it again mainstream just like the independents are! Paranormal Activity wasn't a risk, stop with the ghost movies, stop with the found footage movies and do something different in the mainstream. Take a page from It Follows. Stop being lazy mainstream horror, get off your fat ass and put down the potato chips or twinkies down and shoving them in your mouth and do something else, start trying to do something unique. Just try something different than another remake of a great movie like Poltergeist, sequel to an older franchise, found footage and all that.
    I don't get the hype and praise Halloween 2018 is getting! i just don't want to see these horror icons (Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Ghostface, Michael, Leatherface, Jigsaw) over and over again on the big screen and your just gonna get diminishing returns just like the Universal monsters being ran into the ground in the 30s/40s/50s as they had huge characters and big hits on their hands then pumped out sequel after another (the only great sequel is Bride of Frankenstein) and the bottom completely fell out with diminishing box-office returns and before these characters became jokes even with Abbot and Costello movies then Universal knew when to quit. If Halloween 2018 becomes a hit then studios will be like "audiences want more Halloween, they want more Candyman, more Freddy, Jason Voorhees etc.", but for Candyman, one Candyman movie was enough as the first was excellent but the sequels were cash-ins and no more Elm Street films, Robert IS Freddy as Jackie proved it was a failure to recast Freddy for you can't do it, Robert IS the character and always was as even Englund said so. Can't we have new horror icons already? let the worn out old tired icons like Freddy, Michael, Jason, Leatherface, Jigsaw, Ghostface, Candyman, Chucky and Pinhead die and rest in peace already, don't keep digging up them from their graves every 5 or 10 or 15 years then propping their corpses up on the big screen in Weekend at Bernies style. Just come up with with your own new horror icon and new horror franchise already! i'm not super big in Insidious and the Conjuring spin-offs but at least it's something different, well not quite different, but not the same old horror franchise some of us seen or the same horror icons for they are trying to create their own. I know they haven't been the best but at least they are giving a damn and giving it an effort, that's just how i feel about it. Just try try again mainstream horror! making new horror icons would actually work because there are no ideas to bring in for most horror icons. New horror icons might get the hate, but it may take time before the newer ones would gain praise. I'll say this though. Even though using the same stuff is unnecessary.
    Just like in the last decade we got new horror icons in the mainstream like the Creeper, Captain Splauding and Jigsaw while Sam from Trick R Treat becomes a cult horror icon with Leslie Vernon when Trick and Behind the Mask were sent to the DVD direct to video market rather than to all mainstream theaters which should had happened even Hatchet was shown in midnight theaters than all theaters as there's Victor Crawley whom is a cult horror icon. Now outside the mainstream we got Wolfcop, Tucker and Dale etc. should had been released in all theaters.
    I'd say end these horror franchises (Chucky/Halloween/Elm Street/Friday The 13th/Saw/Scream/Hellraiser/Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and bury them, let them rest in peace from film and let them live on through merchandise, comics, video games, toys, appreal, streams of the old movies on amazon/hulu/crackle/Netflix whatever even re-issues of the films on blu-ray and that's fair game. Can we have new original cinematic horror icons/new franchises already? try to come up with new horror icons/franchises and try try again mainstream and let the older franchises rest in peace in favor of new franchises/new icons.
    I saw Hell Fest which is something different in mainstream horror and a comeback for slasher films, we send the message to studios we want fresh new horror icons and new franchises as that movie has potential to make one.
    Yet there is some like me and Matt/MIke being them some other horror fans who are tired of these same old worn out horror franchises being hurt by these new sequels/remakes hurting the franchises legacy and staining their name to become jokes). Just don't make anymore. That's my advice. The more you make, the longer you keep this franchise sucking the life out of other horror projects and potential franchises. This is like when Universal completely ran their Monsters franchise into the ground, just make new ones already and new icons. Being a fan of these horror franchises/older horror icons is like having a beloved friend who's been on life support for years, some have come to accept they are gone and your just waiting for someone to pull the life support plug.

    It’s funny that the version of Laurie in H20 went through more in that story arc than the 2018 Laurie. The 2018 version just encountered Michael once that night in the original film. The H20 version of Laurie encounters Michael in the first film and second throughout the hospital, and that version of Laurie was more sane than 2018 Laurie...

    • @TheShapeKills22
      @TheShapeKills22 11 месяцев назад

      Laurie in 2018 was totally understable and even better developed than the boring H2O version that doesn't even felt/ looked like Laurie Strode at all. Laurie never got help after the events of 1978. JLC herself explained that Laurie doesn't even had support by her own parents, she lost her close friends, she was almost murered, she saw how Michael scaped like nothing happened after being stabbed by her and shot by Loomis. She returned to school just two days after that horrific night and nobody helped her, there was no mental heath services offered for her (Everything was different back in the 70s). I hate when people say Laurie was "unrealistic" in 2018, because there's a lot of real people around the world with less worse traumas than Laurie's that actually have lived traumatized for decades. In the Halloween Ends novelizaton they even explain that Laurie's mom kicked her out of the house because of her traumas, paranoia & nightmares, then she became older and everyone treated her as the freak, even her daughter got away fro her, plus, Jamie Lee Curti's acting performance was far superior in Halloween (2018), (she even brooke a rib on the fight sequence) and she actually looked like Laurie aesthetically speaking. I love the fact that she was a prepared warrior (She was way cooler in 2018) instead of a coward that even faked her death and changed her name (I love the fact that she became a teacher in H2O, but that's all, also, the sibling twist was unnecesary). Laurie in H20 did nothing until the third act of the movie ,and she even killed a paramedic after a hilarous chase scene at the school. Akkad tricked JLC since the beggining on killing Michael in H2O and then, he disrespected her killing her character off in Halloween Resurrection. Halloween (2018) exlpored trauma and fear in a deeper and more complete way, also, I love the subtext of the movie about how people minimize other people tragedies because of today's standars. The poadcasters even humanize the monster (Michael) tryng to find for an explanaton and seeing his victim as another monster because of her lifestyle (Lauire)
      Just like JLC said, If Lauire would have left Haddonfield, evild have would won, and they gave her a more complete & deeper story,and the happy ending she deserved.
      Halloween (2018) is the best sequel in the franchise, the best movie after the original. because Michael was terrifyng, he looked cool as fuck, the score soundtrack by Jhon Carpenter was magnifecent, the atmosphere was top tier, the acting was better, the kills were better than in H2O, they erease that stupid siblings thing, JLC was magnifecent and the third act was wild and more serious.
      H2O is boring, it has no atmosphere after the opening, the soundtrack was easily the worst in the franchise, the masks were AWFUL, the fight was more like a hilarous chase scene, it felt more like Scream and at the end, Akkad tricked JLC on killing Michael Myers and that lead us to Halloween Resurrection.
      Here's a video of JLC herself explained a little bit of Laurie's story from 2018 : ruclips.net/video/dvbePi1o_Q0/видео.html

    The tracking shot with the killing two neighbors was the best part of the movie! The rest of it was rather tensionless, no dreadful atmosphere, too brightly light, and Sluggish pace. Although I do like the new score by Carpenter and his son, the movie doesn't create the Boogeyman of the first two films, or even part 4. I think they're intentions were more genuine than any other sequels, it's a miss overall.

      I thought the moldy, rotten pumpkin inflating into a fresh fully formed pumpkin in the opening credits was interesting, but also extremely on-the-nose! Like the filmmakers were obviously implying that the Halloween franchise for years has been rotten, but now we're trying to rejuvenate life into it again.

However, nothing in this film leads us to believe that Michael is trained however, and he is simply just described as "pure evil".

  • @stonercrazyclips222
    @stonercrazyclips222 5 лет назад +8

    Just saw it today and I felt pretty much the same.
    I thought there were a lot of disappointments, even the stuff I liked I was still disappointed with. Like the kid's death scene, I can appreciate the ballsy effort to do it in a movie, but the way it was done was disappointing after seeing it. Also the opening with the pumpkin someone said was a rotting/smashed pumpkin coming back to life as a full pumpkin which sounded interesting, but when I saw it, it was like you described it, like an inflatable pumpkin. Just weird and not that creepy and could have been cooler. Also that twist with the doctor character was just out of left field and random as hell. I don't think it was even that hard to figure out, the prison bus has a bunch of escaped patients, and this doctor didn't get killed/hurt etc.? Why not? Also they pulled that, just to have Michael kill him off to add to the body count. I didn't care about this character either way, and he's definitely no Loomis.
    The best characters for me were some of the throw away characters like the chubby guy who consults the granddaughter character Allison then gets turned down. He was ok and at least somewhat likable. The other ones like the sheriff and the kid getting babysat by the blonde girl, he was funny and likable. Jamie Lee Curtis was ok acting wise but yeah her character isn't that well written and her character had much more potential in H20, and while that movie hasn't aged as well as it should, it's still a much better type of movie like this than Halloween 2018 was.
    People are saying based on the ending how are they going to do a sequel? Well, when money is involved they always find a way. I bet when they burnt the house there is probably a window off screen in the basement that Michael busts or crawls out of, or his jumpsuit is flame retardant or some BS idea that we will never see coming. I really thought if they wanted to have a definitive ending for not making any more sequels, they would have Michael's head being blown off by a shotgun but first unmasking him to make sure it's really him so another Halloween Resurrection doesn't happen again, but no. So even then, the ending I didn't see coming but it was honestly disappointing because you don't see anything to show Michael officially died. Even in Halloween 2 he was burnt alive and he and Loomis still came back for sequels...
    If this film was made 10 years ago and was considered the Halloween remake (instead of RZ's Halloween) people would be shitting all over this movie instead of praising it, but because Jamie Lee Curtis, John Carpenter, and Nick Castle are back, it's the greatest Halloween sequel apparently.

      Honestly, what they needed to do was let Jamie Loyd kill again, and if they really wanted to make the thorn trilogy work, elements needed to be within it throughout. I think it had the potentional to be like "original vs. gothic horror Jason" where they have obvious differences in tone, looks, etc. It divides fans but look how many prefer Jason Lives or the original or prior installments. Michael was also surviving what he shouldn't and seemed so much more aggressive but they failed to put it together to make sense. H20 was a far better retcon film, the remakes took the best of both to me. The real failure to me was there. That being said, I would be ok if Michael returned but tossing around some other plotlines with him either not there or in the background in an anthology series could've been pretty fun. I do really enjoy 3, despite the crap explanation for why the "killer device buttons" actually work.

    This series endless retconning is just trash. Ok, it's like Halloween I-2, H20 and Ressurection. They could've continued off of that given Laurie's bloodless death at the beginning of crappy Ressurection. Even ackowledged 4 and returned Danielle Harris as the daughter-that would've been far more interesting than these fan-fiction level family members in "2018." Not that I've hated others-I look foward to the restored improvements coming to 5, and Danielle Harris being in the remakes was nice. But c'mon. Go ahead and retcon thorn all you want as it failed to be the next "gothic horror Jason" change in too many ways, but the kill was taking out II. Halloween II, 4, and H20 to me are the best ones-I still enjoy 1 but the pacing is on par with 5, just makes way more sense/better written in every way. The original felt so natural and easy to follow, it wasnt so much about a huge plot and thats the problem i have with the 2018 one it felt like so much was going on that they didnt even adress certain aspects of the story and just ignored other parts since everything was going so fast that it felt like they just wanted to scramble everything in one movie without actual storytelling or atmosphere because this film had little to no atmosphere or build up because you cant have no build up if your scenes are just scrambled everywhere because i will admit that some scenes are not actually terrible but they were just badly placed like the humor scenes, i dont mind humor but im not gonna feel tension after a frightening moment to cops start making jokes in the middle of a tense scene so theres no good pace or tone it just goes back n forth

    The film is not perfect, but it's a 'good' Halloween movie, especially if you think about the garbage that we got after H78 and H81.
    The movie should have focused more on atmosphere, the people in Haddonfield and more of the shape lurking.
    And some stronger characters.
    But for me, it's without a doubt the best Halloween since H81.
    I like H3, but that's another universe in the series.
    James Jude Courtney was pretty darn good as the shape, again, best Myers since H81.
    The new score by Carpenter was pretty cool, especially the song The Shape hunts/stalks Allyson.
    Very vintage classic Carpenter feel.
    I also like the good old teather of the mind feel to it, more suspence, less gore.
    It had a few very cool scenes where Myers are tracking down his victims, the kitchen scene was very well done, where the camera following the back of Myers thru the entire scene.
    People have their own opinions, these are mine.
    H4, H5, H6, H20, and Ressurection was what it's safe to call garbage.
    I used to like H20 back in the day, but now it feels really dated, very 90's, it tried to be trendy like scream, urband legend and i know what you did last summer.
    Only H20 felt like Myers walked into the set of Dawson's Creek.
    It doesn't feel like a Halloween movie at all, to me.
    But again, my opinions, i respect others opinions on this franchise.

    I thought about doing my own review for this movie (maybe I'll get around to it), but I am always so busy, and this November I'm going overseas to China for a Martial arts tournament, so I have too much going on.
    But, this movie was simply just disappointing to me. This entire film felt like one big homage and love letter to fans of the series instead of being its own self-contained film with a more original story, and that is its biggest problem! This film should have just been called "Halloween: H40" because that is exactly what it is!
    There are not very many likable characters except for Jamie Lee's Laurie, her daughter, grand-daughter the sherif and maybe the little kid. I didn't give a shit if anyone else lived or dies, because they did not matter and there was not enough character development. The new Doctor turning out to be the one who let Michael escape just because he wanted to study him, was idiotic and unnecessary. I'm glad they got rid of the entire "Laurie is Michael's sister" plot, and even John Carpenter himself hated that idea and only wrote it into Halloween 2 because of writers block, and he wanted to get paid. I hated it because Michael Myers did NOT need a motivation to go after Laurie, he's supposed to simply be pure evil which already works on its own.
    The only things I liked about this film were:
    -The tracking shots of Michael throughout the Haddonfield neighborhood
    -Laurie suffering from PTSD after a traumatic experience which is very real and unfortunate in real life.
    -Some of the acting I liked like Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Patton, and the little kid, but that was about it.
    -Some of the kills were okay, but nothing special
    And that is honestly all I like about it. I can't think of anything else.

    Yeah I had a feeling you weren't going to be a fan of this one Matt. I'll admit that I prefer Halloween, Halloween 2 and Halloween 4 over this, but I honestly didn't mind this movie. JLC and Michael Myers are easily the standouts in this, even though it sucks that they didn't actually focus on their story-line more. Why did we have to spend so much time with the damn teenagers? I didn't understand that choice just like I didn't understand the lame, misplaced attempts at comedy which just wasn't funny, but I'm betting that has a lot to do with Danny McBride writing the script. I enjoyed the gore we did get and the tracking shot scene was well directed. I also thought Will Patton was pretty good, although sadly underused. I also agree with you that H20 handled certain elements about Laurie's character much better.

    • @Shalanaya
      @Shalanaya 5 лет назад

      I think the comedy is extremely necessary in horror films to ease up the tension of the films and bring in there a balance and a recharge of energy, so the next tension becomes even greater, and greater, which is building the tension, it is one of the reasons why films like The Thing or the new Mummy failed with the larger audience. All Halloween films have some bit of comedy, some dry jokes, some light hearted moment, the same for action films, it is there for a very good reason. The gore for me was the weakest part of the film, it should have been without gore and blood completely.

    • @LordMalice6d9

Insidious did have a new monster with new characters which is why it's extremely depressing that Hollywood wants to live in the Past mostly reusing famous Horror Movies instead of mostly creating new Horror movies including new Horror Villains along with making sequels to movies that haven't gotten sequels that opened the door for sequels including Super Mario Brothers a underrated movie that doesn't deserve the hate it gets, Deep Rising, Max Steel a line made sequels irrefutable obvious, etc.

    I'm sorry that i have to disagree with you again Matt, but this was not such a bad movie. I respect your opinion, and i can agree with you and others about some things which i also didn't really liked about it, but despite that, i still loved this movie. So while i can't defend something like The Predator, i would and will defend this movie. Honestly, speaking as someone who is a fan of the franchise for years, this was a great surprise and finally, the best Halloween movie ever since Return. I know there is a fan base for H20, but honestly i always thought that it's very overrated and not that well made horror film, although i have to agree with what Curtis said about it, despite it being a paycheck film it does have a couple good moments in it and it's not a complete piece of shit like Revenge, Resurrection and Zombie's films.
    I don't understand what the hell is people's problem with Laurie in this new film. She barely survived the attack by psycho killer, several of her friends were killed, of course that she's gonna be messed up, and that's another thing the movie did so much better than H20. And while i really like Halloween 2, i can't help it but being glad that they ignored that one and entire brother/sister storyline. I never cared for that, and i always thought it would have been more scarier if there is no reason why Michael keeps chasing after Laurie.
    Other characters in the film were also pretty good, but not perfect in any way. And the entire crazy doctor thing really wasn't needed. The score... again, i'm sorry that i have to disagree, but it's fucking awesome and along with one from Mandy, my favorite of the year. And speaking of that film, i fucking loved it and with Halloween, it's my favorite of the year, and while i wouldn't put this new Halloween with the original, i would put it above H2, Returns and Producer's Cut of Curse which are my favorites. It's not a perfect, great or whatever, but it's damn good and one of the better made films in the entire franchise, again, just in my opinion.
    But, saying all this and while i'm happy that it's such a great success, i still wouldn't like a sequel to this, specially because i loved the ending, which is why i'm glad they did re-shoots and changed it following the test screenings. At least it worked for the better in this case than it did with The Predator :)
