- Both recorders have been around for a while now but there are many reviews and few actual demos in real life, so I dared to bring this demo to you and you can even download the uncompressed files from my Website in this link to the post: joyvel.com/zoom...

Well, that intro woke me up. And made me jump for the volume knob.
It is a bit difficult to judge the sound quality as they are not level matched. The H5 is much louder and therefore percieved as better.

The H1 records much lower. I have the zoom h4n and h1 and the h1n doesn't pick up near as much is the exact same situations.
I've owned H5 a couple of times, and I got annoyed with all the background noise. So I might pick up a H1n

Level matching would be relevant if we were comparing processors. Here we are actually comparing the levels as well, i.e. what the recorders are able to record and (consequently) their dynamic range.
The comparison I was looking for! And carried out so well in different situations! I just bought the H5 to record my bike exhaust and my own voice using the mic port with a Rode Wireless 2. The Rode transmitter is mounted in my helmet.
One reason I was ready to shell out extra cash for the H5 was the ability to combine more than one input and record multi files and use them separately in post-production. Something that the H1n doesn’t support. The H1n is a great solution for the beginner-friendly budget-oriented person, though.
I can feel the POWER of the 5. It's TRUE, RAW power. GRRRRR
I like that the H5 picks up more detail, but that also means that it picks up more background noise it seems. I've owned it a couple of times, and I definetly noticed to much background noise in the recordings. So I might try out the H1n next time. Also because it's smaller and easier to carry around.

I started recording audio on this recorder. in my opinion, the main disadvantage is the shaking volume button and the lack of a built-in battery. You can get acquainted with the sound quality on my channel on the latest videos. I liked the recorder in blue color
Thank you for the great review! Having worked with the H6 for a while I won't lie, I was surprised at how good the H1 sounded, despite the obvious loss of detail. I think it's a pretty neat solution in itself, fits nicely in the pocket.
Yeah there were some things it did not pick up, but it still sounded great to listen to! The only time felt at a disadvantage was the ocean sound. In other cases you could argue it was more pleasing to the ear even - as too felt like it cut out some white noise?
The H5 windscreen was more effective which made it sound better in the wind. The audio on both units needs to be normalized. The H5 definitely sounded better overall.
DAMN! The ambience recordings on the H5 are just.. WOW!
This is going to make me spend more money than I wanted

Do you think that the Zoom iQ mics are good or better buy the H1 (bout the same price, more or less)?
The hn1 is a great tool to have for impromptu interviews and gathering random sound files. Hi just have a handle to hold it as the plastic body is not good for direct hand holding

nice video! for ambience sound, i will choose the h5 without thinking twixe, althrough I really enjoy the hi-end response with the acoustic instruments at H1... seems more compressed and less boomy, delivering an clearly sound

The noise bed seems very high on both the H1 and the H5 in this demo. For example at 10:35 or where ever.
Thanks! This is exactly the test I wanted to see as I was trying to figure out what to do to record sound out in prairies with a lot of birds. I have a shotgun mic but I don't feel like it's going to give me the sound I'm looking for. Zoom H5 it is! Is there a better way to cut down on the wind noise when the wind is a bit stronger?
Hi Joyvel, I have a H5 and run phantom powered lavelier mic and was wondering If i recorded with the XY facing one way for the ambient sound and was stood 2-3m behind this with the lavelier to record interview/narration, would this narration also be picked up by the XY? This is for a natural history project and was hoping to collect both tracks simultaneously with my guests so that it flows more naturally than conducting the interview and then recording the ambient nature sounds seperately?
Hello friends, why at 6.00, while playing guitar, both microphones audio seems very good, while at 6.27 I can hear a "hiss" from both microphones, and at 6:37 the audio is without noise again? I'm searching for a good recorder without hiss

Sound from built-in mics where way different to my ears, especially when recording ocean (which I was aiming to do).
I'm looking for getting my first handheld recorder and at first I was planning to use only built-in mics, because I don't have enough budget to get separate mic/s.
I've been looking units from Tascam and Zoom in around 200€, but I'm open for any device in the range.

What's the best way to set up the H4N outdoors? I am having a small speaking event (one person at a time) and was thinking of propping this up in front of them on a tripod with a windscreen to record their speeches. Would that work?

Thanks for the demo, very helpful. I'm new to audio work and am wanting to record drumming bands, I have H1 and H5 but which is best head for H5 as i think the standard x will be too sensitive. Any ideas ? Lee
Hi, actually the capsule that comes with the H5 is less sensitive and was made to handle louder sounds than the one that comes with the H6 (XYH-6). So it's perfect for what you intent to do. You can also try the MS capsule for a better control of the stereo but if you're concern about loud sounds you shouldn't with the XYH-5.
what are the settings you used for the zoom h1
A very well done video, I'm glad I went for the H5 even though I didn't know the sound was so much better. I bought it for the features but hearing this I'd have been quite disappointed in the H1 had i gone that route. I wonder how the H1 would sound with a high quality external microphone if it were possible? Is it just the built in mics aren't as good or is it more? Just curious. Thanks for sharing.
You can only plug a 3.5mm into the H1 and you can connect many mics in it, but if it needs phantom power you'll need an external supply for that, the quality of the sound could be very good if you combine good microphone and preamp and send it to the h1.
How I set H1 for record the wind sound? coz now I have only H1
It's depend on your pocket. H5 have more clear sound obviously.

Great review:), I do have a question though, do you think the condender mics from H4N pro and H5 or H6 are the same ? i'm more intrested in the quality of the external mics, thank you in advance for your answer.
Late but here is one answer. Zooms marketing says that the preamps of the newer H4n pro are the same as the ones of the h5 and the h6.
I had email contact with zoom's customer support and the employee told me that the whole H series mics do have the same specs. So the bigger models may have better preamps and ADCs (converters) but when only using the internal mics of these products there won't be such a big difference in quality.
The main reason to reach out for the bigger models is there xlr compatibility.

I am on a budget and can't decide if I need to buy a new recorder for a shotgun mic or if I can keep my H1. and just buy an adapter. I am on a budget.
it definitely depends on the quality of the mic, but the preamps of the H5 are better than the ones of the H1. Try the adapter it should be fine.

hello everyone. im trying to record sound field using my zoom h1. is there any tips or settings for me? because i find it in my several records, the sound is not natural (feel kinda harsh)
Assuming you haven't changed a setup on either recorder, recordings on the sea coast (sound of waves, change around 2:09) is so much better on H5 that it is hard to believe it is just the H1 vs H5 difference. I mean, there is no such a huge difference in any other situation (traffic, woods, music) so I guess some filtering was ongoing. I own H1 and it is very good for the money, but H5 extra options and external XLR inputs are worth the money even if the recording quality was the same.

01. Can you tell me if the noise reduction of the H5 is much better than the H1? Because i am looking for the best microphone to record the sound of my motorcycle with my GoPro Hero 5 Black. Maybe i would put the micro in a backpack. The Exhause and Engine sound is very loud and the problem is that there is a lot of wind by driving high speeds.
02. Can you recommend a very good small Microphone (lavalier or so) for use inside my helmet with good noise reduction which if could combine best as possible with the H1/H5? I want to record the best sound of my motorcycle sound in combination with my voice for motovlogs.
03. Can the Zoom H1/H5 reduce the noise from my external microphone or just from the build in microphone?
04. Are there big quality differences of the deadcats / windscreen? Which Brandmark / Models do you prefer for lavalier and H1/H5?

Hi Steven! the best sound quality would be from the H5 and you will have more options to connect different mics in it, the H5 comes with a stereo capsule that stands loud sounds, you will need to use a windscreen and I recommend to mount it outside your backpack to have a better sound or you can use another mic, for the lavalier you can connect it to one XLR input or to the mic input of the capsule (it won´t record for the mics of the capsule), then you can take both tracks and edit them to lower the volume of the moto when you talk. For your helmet, you can use the one I used (Polse OLM-10). The H1 won't be able to record from two separate mics.

I did't know yet that the H1 can not record with its internal mic and an external microphone at the same time, so thanks for this important information! Did i understand you correctly, that i cant record from the H5 integrated capsule mic and a external Lavalier Mic on the Capsule Jack at the same time? That means i need to buy a 3,5mm to XLR adapter?
I can try the Polsen OLM-10. Another said the Rode smartLav+ would be really good. Did you tried a comparision?
And yes, i want definitivly record on separated tracks between Lavalier und Integrated Mic.
Yes the capsule only records one source (capsule or mic if it's connected) you will only need a 3.5mm to 1/4 inch connector or also the 3,5mm to XLR adapter you mentioned, the H5 has a combo jack input which accepts both. My English is not the best by the way haha. Good luck.

The zoom H5 is all you need, it can act as an audio interface as well so you only plug your mic in the H5 and the H5 goes with the computer with usb and that's it.

In an aceptable price, get the Rode M5. You need good wind protection for those.
