Model railways aren't my thing. I came across this by accident and sat transfixed for 24 minutes. It's beautiful! I saw a labour of love unfolding in front of my eyes. You were blessed with the ability to create this and then blessed us by sharing it. Thank you :)

In the absence of new material in the last 3-weeks I revisited this early episode and very glad I did. A long sequence around the layout revealing long forgotten vistas from the lower level to the upper and back again. And what a joy.
I highly recommend a revisit to remind us of earlier days. Wonderful.

The combination of the camera angle and height, the diffuse lighting and the generally unadorned background helps the viewer focus on the rails. Even the passing traffic and "wait for it" moments contributed. In particular the view starting at around 15:50 got my attention.

    Greg,
I used both insulfrog and electrofrog points and didn't find a great deal of difference except the insulfrogs were easier to wire. The control is DCC controlled by the brilliant ESU Ecos controller and radio controlled remote. The rake of horse boxes are Wrenn.

Hi Doug. There is something about this route of the DMU that doesn't fit: after entering the tunnel at the south end of Main Station (8:16), when coming out (8:25) it should be approaching the East Junction Station. But it appears through the mining zone approaching the west junction station. Am I right? Do I miss anything?

Can somebody explain why the model trains are not run at a more realistic scale speed, there seems to be some urgency to get around the layout. Also, with all the great improvements over the years, are the powered units not able to reproduce a more 'real' movement, ie. a more gradual move from stand still and a less harsh slow down to a stop. I don't mean to sound judgemental or criticising the efforts in any way, I'm genuinely curious as an outsider to model railways.

    • @dougattrenholmebar
      @dougattrenholmebar  3 года назад

This is quite an old video made when my video skills were not very well developed, and, you are right, its too fast harsh stop starts. Hopefully you should see a difference if you watch this more recent effort. Always welcome constructive criticism. ruclips.net/video/f80dvsph4A4/видео.html

The entire layout is controlled by one single controller. this is a link to the data sheet.

dougattrenholmebar G'day Doug, thanks for that insight. What an amazing piece of equipment! I gather that when you want to send a train from A - B via C the route can be displayed on the screen and all points set accordingly? That's what I meant about pre-programming, or am I still missing something?
Also I gather that the Ecos also enables you to uncouple anywhere on the layout?
Irrespective, I look forward to seeing the next production each week on a layout that will forever only be in my dreams!
      Best Regards, Roger.

I have nothing but praise for this wonderful creation, though if I may offer any useful advice the speed of the trains isn't very realistic. I worked on North London Railways as a guard for some years and trains never take corners at these speeds and especially through points. Acceleration is too fast also, I wonder if speed can be controlled better on model setups?

    • @dougattrenholmebar

Very inspiring! I love to see transitional layouts which embrace both steam and diesel, so this really does it for me.Circa 1960-66? Despite the NE tag I see you have a real liking for LMS steam? I loved the NE A3, A4s and smaller inherited types like J36 & J39, but not all the Peppercorns, Thomson or smaller Gresley's. Great to see the mine and all the associated pit head buildings, now sadly just a memory. I hope those red buses are "United" bonny lad! Keep up the great work, Keith

dougattrenholmebar Be great to see some of those lovely green trolleybuses of the TRTB which you mention in the intro to your channel. I was lucky enough to travel over the system about a year before it went. Great layout and great video!
My only slight criticism is that you should slow the driving down a bit so as to improve the prototypical feel. Acceleration from start, during the run, and stopping feels too quick. If you were to make it more gradual and not aim to reach a high speed - especially when crossing pointwork - then to me it would be more realistic. I find that this is a common approach on many model railways at exhibitions etc., that the driver feels he has to go from 0 to 60 faster than a Ferrari. I appreciate that this can be difficult to avoid, particularly if there is a contact problem between wheels and rails but this is not the case in your excellent layout. I also appreciate that "them's as can - do, and them's as can't - criticise" but my point is well intentioned.
I found this a continuing problem in my old 009 layout, which I have now abandoned, and seems to be the case in most model railway layouts. This is why I switched to virtual modelling and now run a railsim where realistic slower running isn't affected by my dreadful track laying etc.
Many thanks for uploading such a brilliant run!

+dougattrenholmebar Thanks. Yes, I agree, your more recent films are at a prototypical speed and the overall effect is even better! After looking at the DMU Passenger 1 video for a few minutes it also dawned on me that there was also something missing - I'm guessing that the layout is work in progress as there is no signalling. I am not nit-picking, just curious.
      Again, ace modelling.

It's OO scale. Large scale means its a big junction and does not refer to the scale of the models.

Excellent job, 4of5 stars. Maybe invest in some signals, almost as important as trains, maybe slow it up to scale on the speedometer as well you go in top speed straight off. But GREAT job non the less

Thanks Jeffrey, you can click on the 'new HD version' box for the later film which addresses the speed issue.

In my opinion the train should be a little slower if it was real looks like it’s going about 60 mph

Railway seems to go on forever, Doug, like 'Dallss'. Notice you've got a number of Dia. 100 hoppers. They're the Dapol ready to run? If you check in on hubpages.com/@alancaster149 - there's a page on converting them to look more realistic (scroll down the image links a little way, you can't miss it). Been reorganising pointwork on 'Ainthorpe Jct' with a couple of facing point formations to ease shunting movements. You've got a lot of points on 'Trenholme Bar' I see, almost like coming out of Kings Cross, Darlington or York. How long has it taken you so far (I gather it's an 'ongoing' project). Good luck in the New Year, 2021. (I'm having trouble getting the points these days, with Peco struggling with orders).

I use only rtr stock, I don't have time for minor detailing, Trenholme junction is all about creating the 'feel' of the time, rather than the infinite detail, The project has been running for around 25 years in total. The building was erected in 2003 and layout building since then. All the best for 2021.

@@dougattrenholmebar This layout's in a separate building to the one you live in? Nice to have that kind of spare cash, eh. I have to admit that by the time I've detailed my kits and ready-to-run the cost is higher, but I have an aversion to 'toy couplings'. Just a personal thing since I poked my head into a "Railway Modeller" back in the late 80's, saw a brilliant looking layout (for all it was GW) spoilt by close-ups of an engine with 'standard Hornby-type couplings'. As I said it's a personal thing for myself. You've got a good layout there, and it's for yourself. Enjoy it in 2021, and keep safe!

This is such a magnificent layout - but there is one thing so horribly MISSING!!!!
    SIGNALS!!!
I am determined not to make the same mistake with my own layout, that while it is not so extensive, is in an attic and is more than the usual hearthrug run-around.

I like to move them around, they get in the way and restrict the camera positions if they are fixed.

As good as it is, it just isn't realistic without signals in place to protect points and govern train movements. A lot of money has obviously been spent on this, so why not go the whole hog and put semephore-arm signals in place (as it is based in the sixties) as well as telegraph poles, for God's sake.
