About fabric ‘burnout’... as a costume designer/creator, I have a passion for knowing how things are made. The burnout fabric is technically correctly called Devoré. The technique was perfected in France and that’s why it has a French name. The process uses blended fabrics, and combines protein-based fibres like silk with cellulose-based fibres like viscose, cotton, or rayon. A chemical gel containing sodium hydrogen sulphate is applied to the fabric in patterns, either by ‘printing’, stencilling or hand painting the pattern in wherever the designer wants to dissolve away the cellulose-based fibres and leave behind the protein-based fibres, which are not affected by the chemical. The protein based fibres are the base warp and weft of the weave and the cellulose fibres are always only in the weft. The warp, for those who do not weave, are the threads that form the foundation of woven cloth and they are threaded into the loom. The weft are the threads which are added from the shuttle, weaving back and forth to create the pattern of the cloth. It’s quite magical, and very caustic to make burnout cloth, or devoré (which literally translates to devour...)

As you are pushing the roll with your hands, you are not hitting the center very often at all. Is this on purpose? I would be worried about the center not felting.

We always move our hands from center to ends...think more about apply pressure to segmarnts of the rolling bar or pool noodle. This piece felted up perfectly :)
