No official release date yet for Total War 1942, but what's already been done is seriously impressive. Love the work on the units, the custom city models to modernise the game and I can't wait to see what the campaign map will look like. What do you think? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below and subscribe for more just like this!
Thank you for showing my mod's progress! I tend to make this mod as accurate as possible. The initial port will be already more then a simple port only (as all tanks/planes/vehicles got updated to HD, as well as their animations). Where OG Rome Total War had me limited to certain thresholds, some of them (like way more factions), are certainly on the plan board for after release. Of course some of the things you mentioned in the vid (aircraft taking off from airport, building cover etc) are not possible even in RR engine, I am sure pushing everything to the maximum limits :)
This game already exists, its called Men Of War: Assault Squad 2, it holds up extremely well and is amazing despite being half a decade old, the new ones coming out soon too, not to say this is still super impressive and ambitious, but I don't think squad level warfare with the way Total War is designed would fit very well.
Mods like these is why I believe if CA releases a Medieval 2 TW remastered with all of the same available moddable features and graphics on par with Rome 2 - they'll be done for. No one would buy another modern total war game every again if they can just port mods like Call of Warhammer, Third Age: Divide and Conquer and Tsardom into it.
I think WW2 is a little too optimistic for the limits of the game engine. Now what I could see work well is an Industrial age mod, think Franco-Prussian War or Russo-Turkish wars. Roughly ranging from 1865 -1910.
A WWI/II theme on Total War would only work if it was mixed with Company of Heroes 2's combat mechanics. The massive epic battle's featured in regular TW do not fit the theme. Modern combat as it started back in WWI all the way to present day was a whole different beast than musket warfare, which is the most advanced we have in TW. It's not impossible to pull off, but it would have to be a completely different game than what we're used to...
@@tillercaesar-kq4ou answering your last question: people on average are not very clever and tend not to have a general idea of how WW1 was fought and what made it the clusterfuck it was.
@@mdokuch96 yea true. Anytime someone sees a single trench they go “omg this is like ww1 again” I think there were probably trenches and ditches forever in warfare lol
Since I've played Shogun 2 fall of the Samurai, I've had one obsession... Hear me out: World: Total War. Starts 1900, finishes 2000, a bit like Empire spans 1700-1800. I know it can be done, fall of the samurai proved that to me.
Looks like a good proof of concept that a WW2 TW could work for TW. For a mod, i'm getting a sense of immersion there, so i'd imagine if CA did it, they'd be able to nail down alot more. Looks good!!
I am no mod maker myself, but I do think this is a little bit too much to chew on even for professional with years of experience... Interesting idea, a lot of effort was put into it clearly, but in my opinion the foundation was built on the wrong engine. This project reminds me of Don Quixote: noble, talented and virtuous, but losing touch with reality. I have no idea how something even remotely resembling WW2 battlefield can be created on this version of Total War engine. It matters not if it is whole world map available for the conquest or just a tiny part of Europe. No amount of beautiful cities or decorative trains can remedy this illness. Combat of this era is mechanically different. It is no longer about huge battles that decide the fate of Empires in a few hours! It’s about frontlines, logistics, manpower on the scale never seen before… I mean, sure you can create something resembling basic RTS (like Empire Earth), where you order your units to attack and they run and fire at each other never utilizing cover or tactics and where the main difference between archer and paratrooper is their damage and health values... Sure, you can add machineguns, tanks, planes, battleships and even Nukes to the battlefield. But this all will have nothing to do with REAL combat application of these weapons. What's the basic idea of Total War? In this game, unlike in most RTS, we try to simulate battles as close to reality as possible (while making some sacrifices to make them fun as well). You do not command single soldiers in historical Total War, you order whole regiments. You, in theory, try to implement real life strategy and tactics to defeat opposing army on the field of battle. The problem of WW1 or WW2 mods lies exactly there. If we add things like modern firearms into equation, we can no longer simulate combat in a way that has any resemblance of reality. We cannot recreate tactics used in this time period. Front lines, scale of battlefields, trenches, pathfinding, logistics, squad tactics, cover mechanics, suppression... If you are ready to shatter the foundation of Total War just to bring modern weapons into it, why even bother with this engine that was built with other things in mind? Better mod some other game that was created with such systems in mind! It will yield better results with less effort. Now, enough of pessimism and nay saying! If this guy wants to build WW2 mod for Rome: Total War I have ZERO issues with him trying. I said it before and say it again: mod makers are the blessing for any community and should be praised for their hard work! In the end, you aim up to achieve greatness! And this guy is sure aiming at the stars! Unfortunately, in this video I have not heard anything about the conception of this mod that the author has. If it is planned as RTS about WW2 that fully acknowledges limitations of the engine, there is nothing bad in it. Who cares if units blob up and simply fire at each other from the hip if realism is not the goal of the mod? Models in the video look pretty damn impressive. Cities are amazing. If done well it will be fun to play! But, in my humble opinion, it would not be a World War 2 Total War by definition. Which doesn’t mean that it is a bad project… It’s just built very different with different goal in mind.
Need a tldr, then may I ask what games even come close to Rome Total War Remastered that allow for such moddability and also is closer to ww2 mechanically? Company of Heroes 3? That game is barely moddable. Gates of Hell? That game does not have a comparable campaign. Steel Division 2? Same reason but also not moddable. Mount and Blade? Not comparable campaign. Truth is there are no ww2 total war alternatives, and there is a thirst for one. We either have ww2 games that focus only on strategy or only on tactical not both like total war. Whoever make a game like this will hit a pot of gold just like what manor lords did to combine rts and city building which many thought were infeasible in the past and become the most wishlisted game prior to release.
It’s very impressive, but I can’t imagine the battles being fun at all lol. Total war simply doesn’t work past breach loading rifles as a concept. You have to change the most basic foundations to such a degree you may as well create a new game. How the hell are you going to show the fluent and ever moving fronts thet WW2 has for example? The campaign map is a bigger problem than the battles to be honest. I often cringe reading Reddit and seeing people creaming for a WW1 game for this reason.
I always figured for a TW WW1/WW2 to work you need to blend TW with something like Company of Heroes, a hybrid that can emulate the unit-to-unit action of TW while also retaining a larger scope of battlefield maneuvers in the form of artillery, and aerial combat and bombardment, etc... I imagine this mod will try to marry these aspects but I don't know how successful it will be because of engine limitations (whatever they may be). At the end of the day even if it's a partial success I'm sure the people who've been hungry for a WW2 TW game will enjoy trying this mod out.
I not sure. Cool but the natural of mobile warfare of ww2 didn't go well with total war formula. U have to down size unit small enough to fit into a squad and increase the number of unit per to 40 per army/ battalion... It would probably turn into men of war or something similar
Map and cities? Fantastic. Vehicles? Great. Infantry? Fuck that. All grouped up with the same guns and gadgets, looks so cursed and plain wrong, unfortunately. TW does not fit ww2, ww1 maybe, def not ww2
Cool concept, But I don't think it works, just look at air units. And we'd need land/air/naval combat too. And the campaign? How yo simulate whole front lines? Nope. We'd need a whole new engine/game for this.
A ww2 setting problly whouldent work the issue is unit structure its infantry in formation all with the same weapon it simply whouldent work if you want the closet thing to it play steel divison 1944 for a small scale steel divison 2 for large scale even then those battles are wayy wayy more realistic then total war ever has been. The biggest balancing issue imo whould be leathlity if its to low or to high it whould be very unfun to play.
Sorry, but as impressive as this is, it is also total BS. This game engine simply isn't even remotely capable of producing a somewhat plausible representation of modern warfare, neither in scale nor mechanics. The battles look ridiculous and the strategic layer is pointless without proper logistics and supply systems

Proving once again that Modders are the new game developers of the day that have something triple AAA studios sadly lost, passion.
They would still need the platform to mod on, right?
