Making Hollywood TRAILER MUSIC On A LAPTOP...

  • In this video media composer ‪@ChristianHensonComposer‬ shows us how he likes to help tell stories through a more emotional angle compared to simply describing the action with music. By re-scoring a computer game trailer he demonstrates how it is possible to create Hollywood-grade music from a laptop, a mini keyboard and a pair of phones in a hotel room!

Hi Christian, so glad that you're doing well. I've also just started using Cubase. Hoping for a tutorial from you in your wonderful style. On a side note, I'm really struggling with depression and anxiety. How are you doing mentally? Hoping for the best. Thanks for being here. God Speed.

So sorry to hear this. It’s been a tough 18 months. I am very lucky to have a hugely supportive wife who has given me so much strength. However that’s only part of the package that I have deployed to deal with my troubles:
Help others. Weak people don’t give other people strength, strong people do. A phone call, volunteer, reach out to a neighbour, anything.
Get out and exercise. Not the gym, just a long walk. It’s fundamentally what we’re designed to do. Go somewhere remote so you don’t have to do people and leave your device at home.
Eat well, sleep well, cut down on the booze.
CBT very helpful especially with anxiety and paranoia.
      Tidy up and get organised.
Anti anxiety meds. I’m in SSRI’s I don’t cry when I watch movies anymore but it’s a small sacrifice for being a better Dad and husband.
Most importantly get help when you feel you need it.
      Hope this helps mate.
      C x

Thanks Christian, it really does help, and it resonates deeply. I imagine that we are all walking this path together, each of us fighting our battles, seeking our peace.
I understand the sacrifices you've made, the balance you've sought to strike to be there for those you hold dear.
I can feel the grim reality of things. That sensitivity helps me create but it can so quickly overwhelm.
I also take some sort of anxiety pills. They dull the world, but I still cry, even whilst writing.
Anyway… I just wanted to say that I'm always quietly cheering for you. Your music, Crow Hill, your vision-it matters. We're just a blip in time, but you always make this blip count, and your messages always offer a glimmer of hope, especially for those with gentle hearts.

I love it - more of this sort of thing please! I think I’ve been really limiting the potential of these libraries by just playing them with two hands. Yes, they sound completely gorgeous but, as you’ve shown us here, there’s so much more to be discovered by ‘tweaking’ individual notes, trying different gestures. Maybe I’m just a bit dim, but I hadn’t been doing this so found it really inspiring.

I've been loving all the content you've been putting out on this channel. Its so interesting to see the behind the scenes stuff but the things that caught my attention most is the midset stuff. It so easy for bedroom producers to feel isolated and combining that with the typical neuroses of a creative endeavour can be a potent mix. I think its so nice for people to know they're not the only one to feel that way.

Sounds really great. I am in the process of moving across to Cubase. I purchased v12 a while back and I am planning to move across to PC. I used Cubase back on the Atari St many years ago, but have used Logic ever since going to uni and it was all Mac's. I have an M1 Mac but the basic one and it is not sustainable if I want to get back into heavier productions with Libraries. As getting a Mac with a large hard drive and ram is just too expensive now for it be to a sensible investment. I know Guy Michelmore said stick the external drives to the lid, which is a great idea but I am worried it will be a hassle and the extra weight. I can get a 13900k PC with 64gb of ram for about £800. To get a laptop equivalent in Mac form would be thousands. I will still keep a basic Mac laptop for Internet and for sketching in Logic or maybe just Cubase. I really like the Midi on the Cubase as well. I mean why did Logic get rid of the chord track with V9! I also want to get back into Ableton, it was great for Live recording sketches and being on PC is a bonus. All the audio plugins I have will run on the PC as well. I think giving us the opportunity to mess around with Cubase file will be very interesting and makes your video more interactive and your able to understand the techniques better. It will certainly tempt me to purchase your libraries! It's great to see you in your usual enthusiastic style, pushing forward.

    • @GoneComposer
      @GoneComposer 4 месяца назад +1

I can understand the idea that you want to get rid of external hard drives but honestly, a 4tb SSD USB-C external drive is really fast enough to manage your libraries directly from it if you have the good cables.
Plus, if you want a Mac, maybe you can check on second hand market for a M1 (or M2), you'll have a wonderful machine for a fraction of the price.
Of course my goal is not to discuss your choices, you probably have good reasons to buy a PC ; it's just an advice if you didn't had the opportunity to think about this question :)
Went to your profil btw and I loved "What Can We Do But Love"!

The Midi Maker has something called the Sparrow 3X100mm midi controller and it’s under $100.00us. I made a wooden housing for mine but it’s not necessary. Hello, Mr. Henson. I hope this message finds you in good health and happy which you surely deserve after dealing with the craziness which you most certainly didn't deserve. I'm interested in your decision to change from Logic to Cubase. It's funny, because way back when I first became a Spitfire customer, I chose to get a Logic setup because that's what you were using. To be clear, I'm 69, and not in any way 'a fan boy', which is a term I've always thought was demeaning, but I definitely look up to you as a man well worthy of respect as a composer, and as a communicator. If you find the time, I'd be ever so appreciative to hear your thoughts on Cubase over Logic. intrigued It looked like you were running DT 770's straight into your laptop and they were 250 ohms. Was there another component ie interface/ mic amp. I only ask as I bought some but chickened out and got 80 ohms worried me cheap Roland quad capture wouldn't be powerful enough to get enough volume out of them. Cool vid as usual. Sorry picked a boring question but I am genuinely intrigued.

To be fair the greats did it with pencil and staff paper, but as far as the sample instruments, probably not. You could make something very advanced in GarageBand, but at a certain point it wouldn’t be worth the sacrifices.

@@TheCrowHillCo Cool! I’m turning to Cubase for two areas, sheet music and surround/immersive mixing. The score editing in Cubase is of course not aiming at notation software but I think the score rendering is far better than Logic. Also, AU(v3) plugins get their channel order messed up when I go beyond 7.1. Any Atmos mixing in Logic better be using stock plugins or sticking to all tracks having to be mono/stereo and sent to a renderer. Cubase manages to handle both the channel-based and object-based worlds at the same time and 3rd part surround VSTs reverbs shine.
Oh well, rant completed. Working in Logic today because the session is not suffering from those drawbacks and I can just get the job done quick.
