  • What's up guys/gals,
    I am starting a mud room project that calls for several cabinets to be installed. I thought long and hard whether I should attempt to build the cabinets or purchase them. I haven't built cabinets before, so that option was out, plus I didn't have the proper setup and tools yet. The 2nd option was to purchase finished cabinets that I can install right away. Two problems arose from the second option: Cost and color. The cost for this setup which calls for 7 cabinets was over $2500!! And we would have to stick with a stock color; otherwise, the cost would be even higher and lead time would be weeks if not months!
    I have painted many cabinets before, so the idea of painting cabinets was not new or scary to me; however, I have not done unfinished cabinets before. The idea of saving 100s of dollars, make that thousands of dollars and the challenge got me interested. So, I decided to take on painting the unfinished cabinets, which cost me just about $600. Here is the list of materials used:
    Cabinet paint from Valspar $55/gal (I used only 1 gal)
    Sanding sealer $20/qrt (I used 1 quart)
    Polycrylic top finish $18/qrt (I used 1 quart)
    Couple of extra fine sanding blocks and a steel wool pad (not sure what cost is since I had those in my shop already, but probaby $2-$3
    In this video I walk you though the process of painting these unfinished cabinets I purchased from Lowes. These are OSB boxes with a solid Oak trim and cabinet door frame with a 1/4" door insert.
    BTW the finished cabinets from Lowes were veneered, so you can't really sand or paint them! Another reason I went with the unfinished solid wood door frames
    For painting these unfinished cabinets I used my Critter cyphon gun. I spray paint whenever I have routed edges such as cabinet doors and trim.
    Whenever you are working with unfinished wood it's a good idea to start with a sanding sealer to seal the wood and create a surface that paint can adhere too much better than an unsealed surface. Trust me, this step is crucial, you would not believe the difference.
    Here is the breakdown to paint unfinished cabinets:
    2 coats of sanding sealer
    3 coats of paint
    2 coats of Polycrylic
    You will want to lightly sand between coats for an ultimate smooth finish. I hope this video helps you with your future projects.

    First time painting a cabinet. Built my cabinet from unfinished Baltic birch plywood. Used your technique and it came out great! I used a cheap HVLP sprayer and did not setup a hanging station. I was also afraid of the sanding because I only had 220 grit paper and it seemed harsh with even the lightest touch, so I did not sand after every application. My finish was not as glass like as yours but I am still extremely pleased. I imagine after the coat has had a few days to cure it should look even better. I learned a lot with this cabinet build and paint and am very excited about the next one! Thanks!!!

    Hello! This is the best cabinet painting video I’ve seen and the information/instructions are easy to follow. Did you sand the cabinets before using the sealer?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +3

      Thank you! No, I didn’t sand them. These are unfinished cabinets, so they are ready for finish coat. If you are refinishing cabinets, you do not need to use a sealer. I have also painted finished cabinets by applying paint directly, but make sure you apply a protective finish. Sanding sealer is only applied to unfinished wood. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching and supporting 👊🏼

    Great video. I just did this with my existing cabinets, but I used a Graco sprayer as opposed to the critter. I gotta say I wish I had seen this prior to the work I had done, as the critter looks like a way better option.

      Thanks buddy. I have a Graco one too, but I use that one for bigger projects like whole house doors and painting (gut jobs). I’ve seen contractors use the Graco, but u must have the proper tip (very fine tip) and move fast cause that thing brings out a lot of paint. I prefer the Critter for the control and it uses way less paint. Also, the clean up is a breeze. IMO it’s a must have tool especially when you’re doing smaller projects like shelves or trim work. I am sure your cabinets look great, paint goes a long way. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

    Great video! Liked & Subscribed, Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I'm renovating a RV and bought unfinished cabinets for the kitchen. Really glad I watched this before painting them. I have a few questions!
    1. I was going to use primer, but I was worried about the wood grain seems like the wood sealer will help with that. Should I also use a primer after using the sealer, or do you feel like the sealer helps adhere the paint. I want the prevent the paint from flaking or scratching off. I purchased a gripper primer.
    2. Spray gun: We bought the Graco Magnum spray gun but the critter seems a lot more pratical for the cabinets. Do you know if the critter attachement can attach to a Graco Magnum machine if not what spray tip do you recommend?
    Thank you so much! 🙂

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      Glad you found the video helpful. No need for a primer, the sealer will help the paint adhere to the surface, but I would definitely add a clear coat protective finish. Graco makes good guns IMO. I would ensure you have a fine tip on it (the critter comes with only one tip that is not interchangeable). I have a Graco sprayer and I use it for bigger projects and it’s great. Two main advantages with the Critter is easy clean up/setup and low over spray. The biggest disadvantage is the amount of paint sprayed is much less, so you will have to make several passes. Hope this helps! Good luck with your project 👊🏼

    Did you sand the 3rd coat before going to the poly? Mine is not mirror smooth so thought I might touch it lightly? But maybe that’s not needed and will smooth with the poly coats?

    Hi love the video! Very informative with some things mentioned that I haven’t seen yet. (I’ve been watching what seems like thousands of videos on cabinet painting since I’m neck deep in my kitchen Reno) So just some questions for you: 1. Does the sanding sealer take the place of a traditional primer? I haven’t ever heard or seen anyone mention this in any cabinet painting tutorials before. 2. Is it always recommended to hang cabinets while painting vs. laying them flat? The paint I bought is Behr alkyd so it behaves somewhat like an enamel so I just worry that it would run if I hung them up. 3. When recoating do you always follow the recoating time on the product or do you wait longer? I have seen multiple people mention that waiting longer than recommended makes for a more durable surface and better paint adhesion? 4. What is your recommendation for curing time before installing and using? I live in a somewhat humid climate so I usually have to wait longer for painted projects to cure. Sometimes I see people painting and then the next day installing their cabinets. Other times people say to wait a week?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +8

      Thanks for the positive feedback. All gd questions and I’ll try to address. I like the sealer better than primer because it gives a shiny & smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. As for hanging, I do it so I can get both sides same day, it’s just a method that I believe is much more efficient. I spray my paint, so never have the issue of dripping really. Another advantage of spraying is recoating time. Sometimes I can recoat as soon as the paint dries. Since nothing is making contact with the painted surface (like a brush) you will not jeopardize the finish. I am in NE PA, and I have installed next day. If I feel the paint is not as dry to handle, I’ll wait another day, but I don’t remember ever doing that really. I’d also only used water based paint, so unsure with oil based, might require more drying time. I hope I answered all your questions. Good luck with your project. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  6 месяцев назад +2

      Very gd question. The particular board will paint poorly, so I suggest you sand it a few times more than the faces. It will feel much rougher after you paint it, but once sanded it should be gd. I suggest using a foam roller actually because of the size of the surface and the need for more paint.

    Nice looking doors but if you have high quality painting equipment like Kremlin air mix paint guns and pumps, you’ll only need to sand the wood with with a final sanding with 220 sand paper and one coat of oil based paint if paying a color. If finishing with clear lacquer, you’ll need 220 sanding, one coat of sealer, 220 sanding then one coat of clear lacquer.

    I was following this video to the TEE and after spraying the cabinet paint, it’s leaving a subtle orange peel like finish as opposed to a glass like factory finish. (wish there was a way to send photos of it in YT comments) I thought the top coat might reduce it but it looks around the same just shinier lol.
    I’m guessing that something was wrong with the air pressure or paint viscosity. I tried upping the pressure and thinning the paint a bit but the spray pattern stayed around the same. Do you have any recommendations on what might be going wrong?
    Lastly I wanna know what recommendations you have for starting over? Should I strip and sand? If so should I apply the sanding sealer again?

      @gioweo Месяц назад

      @@TrueGritDevelopment First time with the critter and I had tested with scrap wood but it was rougher than the cabinet doors so couldn't see the orange peel. I know you can reduce the paint by lifting the nozzle but do you have any other recommendations for fixing the spray pattern (given its that same velspar paint)? Also I'd like to start again with the panel I painted, do you have a recommended process for doing that? (stripping? sanding? re-applying sanding sealer?) I really appreciate your help

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Месяц назад

      Got it. If it’s the same paint, you shouldn’t have the orange peel finish. Make sure you use a waving motion when spraying and maintain a good distance from the object you’re painting. As for the panel you want to redo I would sand it down to a smoother finish. This does not necessarily mean all the way to “unfinished” wood, it’s just enough so when you run your hand on it it feels smooth, so no sanding sealer needed, but maybe a primer for a base coat. If you decide to sand it all the way to bare wood, then apply the sanding sealer. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the great video! My wife and I are at the beginning of the project. We bought our cabinets from Home Depot (Hampton Bay). We did 2 coats of Sanding sealer. We started to paint the front drawers for a test. We are in the second coat of the paint (we bought the Dutch Boy brand color 183 C for Cabinets - water-based). After the second coat, we still can see and feel the wood vein. Do you believe that after the 3rd coat, plus the clear coat, the wood vein will disappear? We have an incredible smoothness in our cabinets, but the wood vein feeling is still bugging us. We are using Wagner 4000 sprayer to paint them, and we kind of struggle to adjust the right pressure for the paint.

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад +1

      Glad you found it helpful. To be clear, when you say vein you don’t mean grain? These unfinished cabinets are pretty smooth, so mine didn’t have any grains. If by vein you mean raised wood you feel when you swipe your palm on the surface of the wood, then I would sand once more and paint again. If it is in fact grain, I recommend you use a grain filler like Aquacoat with a putty knife or credit card and fill those in, sand and paint. Finishing work is very tedious, I know. Good luck, hope it turns out great for you guys.

      @@TrueGritDevelopment Thank you! Maybe I meant grain but given the smoothness of the cabinets, I believe it is not the case. When I swipe with the palm of my hand is totally smooth, but I can feel some small bumps in the wood. I will sand it again and continue the coats until I get the results we want. I do agree with you, finishing is a bit tedious, but the reward is amazing. I am confident we will get great results following your suggestions.

      For unfinished surfaces and IMO I’d say yes. The sealer binds the wood fibers, so it makes for a smoother surface to finish with the paint or stain. Not to confuse this with grain, it does not fill in grain. Some ppl were telling me their surfaces were still grainy. You need a grain filler for that. Anyway, if you are finishing a dark piece of wood that had previously been finished, I’d do with primer. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

      Typically you only want to paint the face and doors. Higher end cabinets will come painted all throughout, but that usually happens if you’re building from scratch. Lay out your panels and paint them before construction; otherwise, it’s a nightmare to get paint inside every nook and cranny of the cabinet box.

    Hi! Love this video!!.. Wish I had seen it before installing the cabinets. I have put primer on one door already (as well as the boxes, which also have a very thin coat of paint in addition to the thin coat of primer).. can I put the sanding sealer over it? Or, do I need to sand the primer (and paint) off first..? Also, my cabinets are from Menards and do not have any veneer on them.. Do I need to put any kind of sealer *inside* the cabinets? It is raw wood.. and, how would you paint the boxes (which are already installed) themselves.. with a roller, or would you still use the sprayer? Thank you for any advice!!

      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад

      Hi Davina, glad you like it. Unfortunately, sealer goes first, so yes to sanding primer and paint, sorry. I personally wouldn’t worry about sealing the inside box. One of the reasons the faces and doors are sealed is because they will get paint or a finish stain…etc. as far as painting the boxes (I assume you mean the faces of the boxes) a cabinet paint roller will do the trick as you don’t want to get paint on everything in the kitchen. Even though the Critter doesn’t have a lot of overspray, it will still get paint where not needed. I also recommend using a staining sponge/block if you’re going to seal the cabinets prior to painting as apposed to paint brush or roller to ensure even coverage. Good luck with your project! Pls share and like the video 👊🏽

      Glad to hear it’s helpful. Do you have grain now? If you do, you will need to apply a grain filler. It depends how solid/smooth you want them to look. The cabinets I got for this job from Home Depot were very smooth and hardly showed any grain especially the door faces (the stiles and rails), so I only applies some wood filler here and there. If the grain is very light, paint will help fill it, but you’re better of using a grain filler like aquacoat. If you’re unsure, apply the finish to one cabinet and see how you like it. Hope this helps.

      Thank you! I am very happy with them as well. To clarify, these were unfinished from Home Depot. They do come smooth to the touch with no grain on the faces. The faces being the 1x2 stile and rail. The panels were also smoothish on the face, but grainy on the back. The wood sealer does fill in the fibers of the wood, it is NOT a grain filler. If your cabinets are grainy, like the old oak cabinets, you will need a grain filler such as Aquacoat. I am literally editing a video now where I use the grain filler on another kitchen project. Give me a few days and I should have that up. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

    Hi there! Today we were quoted just over $2000 for someone to paint our cabinets 🤯 needless to say, we’ll be doing it ourselves! Does the process change much to paint old cabinets? We definitely want to sand them beforehand. I love the finish that you got, definitely getting a critter siphon.

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +2

      You’re going to save a lot of $$. I have painted many finished cabinets before. Honestly, you don’t have to sand them either IMO. Just give them a good clean to make sure no grease or caked dirt is on them. If they are already finished, you can skip the sanding sealer part and go right to paint. I don’t prime either because in my experience as long as you finish them with a protective finish you will be good. You will love the Critter, just practice on some scrap pieces to get the hang of it. Good luck with your project. Please like and share the video 👊🏽

I'm about to buy the paint (already sanded and sealed and it's clear that I have a great surface to paint - with minimal time/effort so far). Just noticed you use an oil based paint - can I sue a water based, or is the oil for kitchen cabinets a far superior choice?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 месяца назад +1

      Sure. Grab a super soft bristle paint brush for the rails and stiles and use a cabinet roller (the white thin ones) for the flat surfaces. I also recommend cabinet grade paint. I have also used floetrol in the past to extend drying time, which allows the paint to spread more evenly. You may find it necessary to sand b/n coats (220 or finer sand paper). Hope this helps.

      Glad you like it. I have always used the water based poly and the results were outstanding, no tackiness and no scuffs. I have just bought the oil based poly, but haven’t used it yet. If you have the water based Poly, you should feel confident. However, it’s imperative to get an even coat. If you’re spraying, be sure to stand back at least 10” and use a fan technique. • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      For sealer apply first coat then 2nd coat right away, wait 2 hrs before you sand it. If you’re spraying paint, by the time you’re finished your 1st coat, you’ll be ready for 2nd. Sand it lightly before applying your final coat. Spray the poly, sand if necessary (I often skip this step) then apply 2nd coat. No need to wait between applications because spray paint (using critter) will dry fast enough. Obviously room temperatures and humidity play a part, so for example, if you still see wet paint spots or wet poly spots then wait a while longer before applying additional coats. Usually the 2nd and 3rd coats will take longer to dry since wood has already beed saturated. Hope this helps.

      I would lightly sand after each coat of paint; however, feel the finish as you may not needed after the third/final coat of paint. I would also apply the wood filler as early as possible, so you achieve the same finish throughout. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

    Hi :) First, thank you so much for posting this informational video! Second, I fully admit whatever happened is probably me not doing something right...
    This did not work for me at all. My cabinets were the unfinished ones but the previous owner painted them. You could still see and feel the grain so I used the sealer (same in the video) and I felt like it was doing a good job filling the grain but needed another coat so I did 3 coats total (sanding 220 in between). Then sprayed my first coat of paint (with the critter and same paint you used in the video) and it looks like I didn't use the sealer at all. You can still see all of the grains. What did I do wrong? Thanks!

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад +3

      Thanks! Sorry your cabinets didn’t come out as you hoped. So, the sealer is used to fill in pores in the fiber of the wood, not wood grain. The cabinets I used in this video were from Home Depot and they come flat/sanded. If you have grainy wood cabinets you will need to use a grain filler. Aqua coat is one you can try, it’s water based and easy to use. Unfortunately, wood grain fillers should be used first before paint/stain. If your cabinets are grainy and you want them smooth I am afraid you’ll have to sand them back to bare wood and start over, sorry. I suggest you do that on a small cabinet face like a drawer and determine if you want to do it for the whole project. Hope this answers your question.

      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +1

      Hi, from my experience the spitting happens when the paint runs low inside the mason jar. If it’s spitting when there is enough paint in the jar, it could be something blocking the paint inside the syphon tube like paint slime or debris. Also, if the paint builds up outside the nozzle, it could cause spitting. I set my psi b/n 40-50 depending on the paint. I take a few practice runs on cardboard or scrap wood first. I set my nozzle all the way down, so I get more paint out. Hope this answers your question.

The critter does have some limitations when it comes to big coverage like a panel or cabinet box, but IMO nothing beats it when it comes to spraying stiles and rails on cabinets doors, trim and even deck spindles. It is by far the easiest spray gun to clean too. You do not need to thin the sealer or the poly. The paint may need thinning depending on how thick it is. In this project I didn’t thin, but raised the PSI. Honestly, I would try it as is on a piece of cardboard. If you feel it isn’t flowing smoothly, go ahead and add some water, very little. • @TrueGritDevelopment

      That’s awesome. No issues at all with mine. The protective finish is key to extend the durability. These are unfinished cabinets, so the paint sticks better than previously finished cabinets. If you’re refinishing old cabinets, make sure you prime them good before applying paint for better adhesion. I did not think the paint. Good luck 👍🏼

      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      My unfinished cabinets were from Home Depot and they were sanded smooth, so I didn’t need to use any grain filler. When you say grainy, are these deep grains? I’d they are, you have to use grain filler to smooth them out (I am uploading another video soon). If the wood is smooth, you shouldn’t see grains maybe a shadow of them, but they shouldn’t stand out. If you aren’t happy with the results, you can either use a grain filler or even a joint compound and spread it evenly scraping off all the access, sand and paint. Deeper grains will need 2-3 coats. It will dry quick, so you apply 2 coats of filler in one day easy. I use Aquacoat and or Minwax wood filler depending on the application. Hope this helps.

    So this sand sealer fills all the wood grain? Also what did you do on the inside of the cabinets?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад

      No, the sand sealer seals the wood fibers and provides a smoother surface for the paint to adhere to. These cabinet faces were smooth enough for what I was looking for. If you wanted a wood grain filler, you need to get a special wax or wood filler. You don’t paint the inside of the cabinets only the face trim. I have another video detailing the painting process: ruclips.net/video/3O-gEEK_t9s/видео.html

    How long did this project take you? What was the dry time in between coats?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад

      Both good questions. I’ll start with the east one. It takes very little time b/n coats if you are spraying. In fact, by the time you are done with the set of cabinets, you can immediately go back for a second coat. Once you have 3 coats on, it takes a little longer for dry time. As far as sanding, you will have to wait at least a few hrs.
      It’s hard to say how long the project took. It depends on how many cabinets…etc. for this project it took 2-3 days I believe. Only because I filled in some imperfections and sanded between coats. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching and supporting 👊🏼

      Not with the critter. I did get some on items that were super close (within 2 feet). I suggest you move items further. I was able to wipe the misted paint as it’s water based paint. The critter has very little over spray unlike air sprayers. If you keep PSI below 50, you’re gd. For stains and clear coat I go to 20-30 PSI. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      Hi, I noticed this happens when there is paint build up on the screw on portion of the syphon pipe. Unscrew the nozzle and use a small bristle brush to clean all the build up. You can also dip it in paint thinner for a few minutes and brush it. Also, sometimes while you’re painting and pausing, paint builds up at the nozzle, so be sure to wipe it as u go, I simply use my finger to wipe it off. If you have Flotrol, you can use that in your mixture, it may help too. Let me know if that works.

    • @keyanawilson127

      Thanks for the response! I did as u suggested and got it to spray pretty good for a good minute. I was able to finish seven cabinet doors. But Im starting to think this paint just might be too thick! I used 4 cap full of the floetrol and it just keeps clogging up to point where nothing comes out. I won’t start in the kitchen until I figure something out. Which primer do u use?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      Yes, looks like the primer may be too thick. What PSI you on? I would go up to 60 PSI. Primers are stickier in general, so you will always have a harder time. Increasing PSI may help. Oil based primers are best, but they do smell (use a mask). Alternatively, you can use a water based Kilz primer. I have another video where I paint finished kitchen cabinets, check it out. Hope this helps.

    After I have applied the sealer it doesn’t seem to smooth out after sanding as much as it was before the sealer and I don’t want to sand to much and remove all the sealer! Should I use a wood filler to make sure it’s smooth before painting and just sand more?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  8 месяцев назад

      You’re painting unfinished wood? And after you applied the sealer, it’s rougher than when you started? Something isn’t right. After applying the sealer and sanding, you should have a smoother surface. Keep in mind the sealer doesn’t fill in the wood grain, so if you’re feeling the grain that’s normal, nothing the sealer can do about that. Is this what you’re referring to, the grain?

    • @brianahfoster7817

      That’s a great question. I have used a “cabinet” roller on flat surfaces and it looks great, so yes on flat surfaces. The concern is when you have stiles and rails with designs the brush tends to leave too much paint and you may see drips here and there.
