Great content. I used to hate your channel thinking you were a total Newbie but it is apparent that your acumen is actual and more importantly, your research projects demonstrate real inquisitive love of mycological pursuits, which I love, because same kind of interest personally. Very interesting test and honestly this kind of content, as more and more people discover agar, develop proficiency with mycology, will become extremely popular. Thanks!

Thank you for explaining the advantages of working from spores. I was really starting to wonder why anyone would ever want a spore syringe, since it is so much faster and more efficient to work from liquid culture. As a newbie who isn't really interested in breeding new strains, I will go with liquid culture, but it is good to know why so many vendors sell spore syringes.

If you inoculate (via a spore syringe) a liquid culture container, why are the resulting mycelia not, possibly, multi-phenotype? In other words, how can you be sure that ALL the mycelia in the LC is the same phenotype?

Great video! question, suppose i want to breed a better yielding(or faster, etc) ostreatus strain but only have one strain so it would technically be inbreeding and there wouldn't be any new genetics, what are the chances it would be an improvement compared to cross breeding two different ostreatus strains assuming the successful cross of two genetics?
So basically am i wasting my time trying to get something better from inbreeding one strain or is this a viable way and how does it compare to crossing different strains? My reasoning is maybe there is more than enough genetic diversity potencial in one set of genetics for it to not be an issue, what do you normally do? I'm asking because there aren't many different genetics here in my country.

Hi Gary. I'm an avid and fairly new watcher of your videos, which I find excellent. I just placed an order with you for a few LCs, for the purpose of establishing a outdoor bed, hopefully by mid - October here in Louisville, KY. I have my spawn bags ready, and I'm fighting time. I am looking for your video you reference about fall planting, and desirable species. Can you refer me to that, or alternately, CAN YOU SUGGEST some varieties which you have in stock? On hand I have Stropharia Regusoannulata, Pioppino, Brown Beach, and King Oyster. You mentioned Morel and some others. I'm fighting a first hard frost in December, likely. Thanks, Gary. I love your new house. Gorgeous view. But back to the mushroom topic: I'd like to have three varieties in the ground in 5 weeks. Thanks!

I highly doubt you will encounter significant variability among stropharia rugosoannulata TBH I would probably also though use the multi spore to force more dominant phenotypes for your specific microclimate to outcompete others though...that said probably not much genetic variability speaking from extensive cultivation experience and extensive experience collecting this species in numerous locations in field planted and wild, as well as long term grower of it and expert biocultivator. what would be interesting though would be to see if you can fruit it indoors and or create an albino or leucistic version of it? See if you can fruit it indoors would be more fun,....this is the most aggressive mycelium I have ever seen in real life it can colonize underground like 100 feet a month according to research. Also to any people reading who havent tried it imagine a Portabello but about twice as good. the "wine" segment of the name refers to the burgundy coloration of the cap top (pileus) but also to the flavor, which tastes like, at least pan sauteed properly (meaning perfect french gastronomic technique not by amateurs) it has already been deglazed with wine when it has not actually been. these are way better than Agaricus bisporus flavorwise, while texture is similar. shape is NOT very similar I am just using A. bisporus as a relevant example because most people are familiar with this species, and when weighing the options to grow versus not it needs to be known this is significantly better than your most common grocery store option. the downsides to this species is that your fruiting is not wide range, meaning, does NOT fruit year round. it is ephemeral but can be dried easily and picked huge. grilled they are fantastic. I grow shiitakes Japanese style and have them virtually year round and my shiitakes taste way better than sawdust block grown grocery store ones and I pick wine cap over shiitakes, even the 50-100 USD per LB log grown shade grown ones I have (market price for quality in Japan NOT here, but it isnt the same product so price is not relevant comparatively speaking). Spawn location doesnt matter and it colonizes rapaciously easiest to grow mushroom I have EVER grown except for Pleurotus pulmonarius that stuff is weedy as hell and tastes like licorice (JUNK) but is a great newbie project, as is Agaricus blazeii spawn planted in soil in pots in chunks (does better broken into like silver dollar sized versus completely broken up extensively tested and VERY easy if you have spawn and the temps of the soil are over 70 F).
