finally a video which has comments enabled! i just started my masters in IT even though am not from IT background. sounds dumb but i really wanted to change fields. this channel has been amazing for me! thank you so much eli! i hope you read this some day! i would love to be a part of some ongoing conversations like a community or something! Thanks anyways!! i now know how to use server 2012, hyper v servers, and vmware! thanks!! cheers from new zealand!
Thanks for the video. This looks like exactly what I need. I can't use the standard quota settings because it can only be configured one user at a time. I also couldn't use the group policy method because the environment in question uses folder redirection policies but not roaming profiles.
A few questions here. First, do the users get a warning other than email? Like the warnings received pertaining to permissions? Second, will you be doing a class on setting up the server for sending emails? Third, what do you suggest for users who actually use many GBs of data, say GIS data and many pictures?
I love FSRM, however one of my biggest gripes about it is that it only works in a positive fashion. As an example. If I have a 2TB volume with 2 shared folders at the Root and you set each quota at 2TB, the quota applies to each shared folder. So, if each shared folder has 1TB of data in it, we have 2TB and are maximum capacity, but according to FSRM the share is only at 50% and won't kick off an alert. It would be nice if MS would update the feature so that it worked from a negative standpoint. Say, when the volume is at 10% free space, regardless if how much each share is using it kicks off the alerts. Unfortunately not every environment was built correctly with one share per volume. :( I ended up writing a custom scheduled task that runs a powershell script to email the members of an AD Security group. It compares overall capacity against free space to generate a percent free value, and then will generate an email notification that lists the UNC share names. But I do love FSRM for Home Shares. That is when it makes perfect sense.
ahh ! this tutorial will mate me prefer windows server to owncloud or qnap servers... but windows home server 2011 was a nice solution too. unfortunatly impossible to found a licence in any store.
I have a folder in my domain controller in which will be stored all roaming profiles of our active users (C: oaming_users\%username%). Could be this quota-system work to limit the storage taken by each roaming profile folder, simply giving "C: oaming_users" as quota path? I don't need it sending emails, just a warning notification on the desktop of the user.
Hi Eli, With windows 2012 server, for a SQL server and a file server, is it better nowaday to setup server with different volume c: for systems & apps and volume d: for data? Thanks
Hello Eli the Computer Guy maybe its a silly question.. but why not installing aaall the roles and features in the first place?? do they take a lot of space?? is that the only reason?
if you only install what you need it keep the list short and simple. Do not need to stare at a long list to find what your looking for. Also remember in a big company this will most likely be separate servers in which case you will not install AD users and computers on a file share server.
thank you, great video, but this is for a shared folder, how do you manage this for a terminial server if you need to stablish a quota for each user documents, do i have to create a folder for each user? :(
If you have a share for user´s home folder (\\server\user_home_Share), is it possible to set a quota template for each user home (user1)? Or does It only work for top level shared folder? example \\server\user_home_Share\user1; \\server\user_home_Share\user2 ... usern
Hi, I have configured quoata with File Server Resource Manager, but when i test send email i have error: Relay denied proper adhentification required. I have an another server that send quota email, i tested it with this smtp that not working in the first server. This work fine with the second. i think there a service or role that must be instaled in the frist server to be able to send email.!! Thanks
hi.. can anyone tell me , by this tool can the disk quotas be given till certain duration - say for next 10 days only, after which the user get auto mail to delete the data . as we are maintaining temporary backup servers, where users are given the backup space only for certain duration this option will be very helpful .. :)
I prefer that he talks this way. Easier to understand and take in for me who is not a native English speaker - as Mari pointed out.

May I know about "Run this command " feature in disk quotas?
Eli i have a Western Digital NAS Dx4000 is it possible to add that to Windows Server 2012?
thank you, great video, but this is for a shared folder, how do you manage this for a terminial server if you need to stablish a quota for each user documents, do i have to create a folder for each user? :(
Hello does the quotas apply to the individual users or all the users share the memory allocated in the quotas?
If you have a share for user´s home folder (\\server\user_home_Share), is it possible to set a quota template for each user home (user1)? Or does It only work for top level shared folder?
example \\server\user_home_Share\user1; \\server\user_home_Share\user2 ... usern
This is overall storage, how do you assign it to per user? Or is this a limit of 100GB per user?
Create a folder per user.
Please sir could you arrange the desktop icon by kind or name or anything, it's killing me inside
