CLASSIC/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
FIONA APPLE ALLERGIC TO FLOPPING
We’re getting so spoiled
I’ve been so excited these last two weeks just waiting for these to come out, each day I think we’re gonna stop getting these classic reviews and then try again another appears in my fyp
On god, this classics fortnight has been the stuff of legend
I hope Melon is getting as much enjoyment out of this too being able to nerd out more about any album he wants.
Needle inspires me.. My parents said if i get 70K followers They'd buy me a professional camera for recording..begging u guys , literally
Begging..
the neverending classics week
Fiona is one of the greatest to ever do it.
Roll Tide!
Of all the ones who ever did, she was the most.
True but.... go blue :D
The way that "I'll Know" builds into that final moment where she croons "it's okay, don't need to say it" and she lines the rhyme up perfectly to say "I'll know" one last time, and the music cuts out... and you're just left with silence, because she can't bear to lie to herself. What a song.
I always saw it as the title fills in the gap there, rather than 'I'll know' which she repeats throughout the song, the missing last line is 'I know', as in it is a present reality rather than a future tense
I always wanted to talk about this!!!! I always say “I know” when I’m listening to that part of the song (the sing which is top 3 in that album for me) and it comes out natural it’s so cool
she says "don't need to say it" and then proceeds to not say it lmao
Two things... (1) if you haven't already heard it, check out her do "I know - Live at Largo", might be my favourite live performance of hers and maybe anyone ever). It's breath-taking and when she gets to to the end you can see her glowing and hear her say "I'll know" even though she doesn't actually say it. She somehow just radiates it with her being. It's stunningly beautiful.
(2) Check out Elvis Costello covering "I know". So cool to hear a legend cover her and call it a great song. Interestingly... Elvis chooses to say the final "I'll Know" at the end. And while I prefer Fiona and her choice to leave it hanging... it works for Elvis in his version and is brilliant in it's own right. He was just gushing about her after they performed together.
it hits every time - always give me goosebumps no matter how many times ive heard it
Fun Fact: This album was in the Guiness World Record in 2003/2004 for having the longest album title
no shit sherlock
Paper Bag is genuinely one of the best songs ever written. The first verse is just exquisite. She’s a generational talent and i’m lucky to be alive at the same time as her…
Definitely top 5 of my favorite 🍎 songs
It’s one the best songs of all time
Idk, it's such an overrated song. There are at least 5 songs on When the Pawn that are better
@@brianvillatoro6588no. almost any ranking of the songs on this album are valid, but to call paper bag overrated as if there are songs that are miles better than this song on this album is just wrong. All of the songs are well-written, beautiful, different and of equal quality.
@@brianvillatoro6588 "I know" is my personal favorite
One of the Greatest Lyricists of all time
“Evil is a relay sport, where the one who burns, turns to pass the torch”
I heard in a podcast that she wrote that line in middle school lol
i listened to that song on lsd and that was an experience
was just noticing that shes really good at writing
I just started listening to her and my life is forever changed...... I've always been meaning to, but when I finally did!!!!! I just gotta say that her music hits harder than any other hyped artist that I've been "meaning to listen to" haha

Fiona's masterclass, truly an all-time great, glad to see this finally get the classic treatment. Also, love the title displayed in its 90 word glory...in the description.
Favorite lyric: "How many times can it escalate till it elevates to a place I can't breathe?"
Idler Wheel is her masterpiece but this album is a fucking banger for sure
@@poop_stormshe has at minimum 3 masterpieces let’s be real
@@markercrayon457 Every album of hers is a 10, except for Extraordinary Machine which I would give a 9 to. Flawless discography ❤
“I Know” is so fucking good. Probably my favorite Fiona song
warms my heart to see people praising this song, its deeply personal and I love seeing that I'm not alone in having it resonate
Only those who were in that position will get it, its an amazing song
Shout out Jon Brion. He produced this whole album and is such a great composer when it comes to not only other artists albums like Fionna, Elliott Smith, and Mac Miller, but also Scores to movies(Punch-Drunk-Love, Eternal Sunshine)
His soundtrack for Synecdoche, New York is an all-timer. Beyond powerful and haunting
And Kanye's Late Registration
aimee mann also
His album “meaningless” is a vast, deep and too slept on. His standing live shows at the Largo live in legend too.
i love jon brion so much
I literally just dropped everything to watch this. My favorite Fiona album and top 3 of all time. Just perfection. So powerful
what are the other two?
Ooh I like dweeb music I’m so quirky
@@arielpagliero9619 I'd probably say When The Pawn..., Norman F***ing Rockwell! and Heaven or Las Vegas are my top 3
@@PeterRiderMusic nice! NFR is the first Lana album I really paid attention to, it's brilliant although not perfect for me.
When the pawn... and Heaven or las vegas are both 10/10 in my book

Paper Bag is really a 10/10 song. And also just so incredibly timeless, like it could’ve come out of the psychedelic 70’s or 2020’s and it still would’ve made sense in those times. I love it so much. Great music video too!
two of my favs are get gone and fast as you can, her music is just so good, paper bag is incredible too
he said "it's all in your head", i said "so's everything" but he didnt get it.
Yeah Paper Bag is a true masterpiece. So glad you gave a shout out to the little conversational tone she takes on that line "So is everything, but he didn't get it." Top tier performance.
I aspire to ever write something as classy as "And then the dove of hope began it's downward slope...", analogy that she uses again kind of in Regret, from The Idler Wheel
"Fast As You Can" had me the instant I heard it.
"Sometimes my mind dont shape and shift...but most of the time it does"....
there's not a single wrong moment on this album. even all these years later, if it released yesterday - it'd still be incredible. timeless classic.
and, Fiona's soul-wrenching voice is almost too much to bear... can't listen too long alone & by yourself w/o gettin a watery eye.
Fiona's entire discography is truly phenomenal, and When The Pawn... is my favorite of the bunch (The Idler Wheel... a close second ❤)
Anthony reads the full title of all the other albums. Surely a sign of discrimination.
Fiona Apple is amazing! Love this record so much.
Fantano please consider these next!!
HOLE - LIVE THROUGH THIS
PJ HARVEY - STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA
TORI AMOS - UNDER THE PINK
i would be more interested in tori's debut then UP imo, great picks
Boys for Pele or Choirgirl Hotel for me
He doesn't like Hole that much
gotta be to bring you and pele tho
yes pleeease
This has been the greatest classics week ever. Thanks for putting in the work Anthony!
This album rocked my world as a teenager and Fiona has been such an inspiration ever since. So glad you gave this album its due; Classic Week has been a real classic so far!
Yo classics week has been absolutely fire this year! I heard this album for the first time a couple of months ago and immediately had to grab a copy of the record as soon as it arrived at my local store, absolutely love it
Idler Wheel has always been my top Fiona Apple record, for the way her vocals and piano interplay with those insane drums, but she really doesn't miss. Its wild how many people write her off as a 90's pop one hitter.
Favorite Fiona line (screamed at the top of her lungs):
"I ran out of white dove's feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address me."
We have been getting BLESSED with all these Classics man, thank you Mr. Fantano!
Mr Fantano. The comedy is tight.
It's just so lovely to be sitting here 20 years down the line and hear someone validate what I've always known, and secretly hoped- that Fiona is a masterful artist that will be remembered as a wonderful song writer along the lines of Cole Porter or Nina Simone, and a lyricist the ilk of Bob Dylan/Joni Mitchell. Her albums have been bastians of truth for me, and for so long my family and many people would disregard her as "angry girl" music, or a trend of the time. Thank you for putting this album in it's rightful, timeless place!
A few songs from this album had been sitting in my partner and I's Spotify Blend last year, and I was so glad when I finally took their advice and gave it a listen. I come from a background of almost exclusively metal, and last year was a big step in breaking out of that. This record was a huge help. Fiona's diverse but always poetic delivery, the dark and haunting piano lines, and the surprisingly fierce rhythm section immediately caught my attention. "Fast as you Can" remains my favorite track. The drum groove is elite, and I absolutely love the chords in the verses.
YES MELON THANK YOU. One of my all time favorite albums, hugely impactful to me as a child and as a young artist and I hold her in the highest regard as an artist. It is a near perfect record, every single damn track is memorable. Just love her so much. Thanks for this!!
Bold move to extend classics week to classics year but i respect it
Melon has been cooking like crazy with these classic albums
This brought a huge smile to my face from start to finish. This album is one my faves of all-time. Fiona is a one of our very best singer/songwriters and I feel grateful to have seen her live twice. It’s hard to pick a favorite but Limp, Paper Bag, Love Ridden, Get Gone, Fast as you can, I know have moved me for years.
An untouchable talent, a complete force of nature. This as well as Idler Wheel are my go-to’s.
This album is equally great as Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Both deserve a 10/10.
Late here but I have to add that The Idler Wheel belongs in that category too. That album is nuts good tbh

Fiona is one of the most bad-ass humans
props for putting the full title in the description lol
Thank you for reviewing this Melon. One of my favs of all time.
As an aspiring singer songwriter, Fiona Apple is in my top 5 inspirations without a doubt. The way she transmutes her feelings into words that are so descriptive and are able to nicely weave within her melodies is fascinating. Her whole discography is constantly in my rotation~
Goated drumming from Matt Chamberlain as well!
Fiona is truly special artist. Her lyrics are the the most incredible poetry and her performance is just fire
I think we're getting Classics *Weeks* this year, and I'm all in for it lol
Can't believe you gave The Idler Wheel a 9/10 and then forgot to include it in your best albums of the 2010s list
I know, he says he literally just forgot about it
The definition of greatness. She's a living genius and without a shadow of doubt one of the best lyricists of all time...
It's been interesting hearing these old albums viewed through the lense of modern times. Fiona Apple is great. Check out her cover of the Waterboys' "Whole of the moon" if you get a chance.
I KEPT SCREAMING AT FANTANO TO DO THIS DURING THE LIVESTREAM AND HE DID IT OMG MY IMPACT
Please do "Deathconciouness" by have a nice life before you finish this up. It's ranked in the top 20 in AOTY and is widely considered one of the best of its era
by far my favourite of hers. and it has tough competition, just an amazing record all around
He just keeps GOING
Omgg i thought we'd get the next Fiona review in like ten years😭
Ugh this album did so much for me in my “coming of age” years ❤️🩹👌🏽
i recently added this album to my vinyl collection!
Fiona Apple’s first two albums were so amazing, I properly fell in love with them
The Idler Wheel too
EM erasure
@@dn4339 her weakest but even that one is decent
@@f4gsforpele It's slightly better than Tidal imo
@@youarereadingmynamerightno4311 not the Tidal erasure 🫢 it’s definitely far more consistent than EM which is kind of a mess and FTBC which has her best concept but some questionable execution
I personally like Idler Wheel a bit more. It turns up the whimsy while being just as dark if not darker then anything off Pawn. That being said the drums on Pawn are to die for
literally how does he never miss with these, ahhhh i love this album
You reviewing when the pawn and demon days in a week which are my top 2 favorite albums of all time is crazy
the astronomical amount of times i listened to this album as a teenager in the early 00s. truly a 10/10 banger with so many potent memories attached to it.
I was literally listening to this album today and thought it would be cool if melon rewieved it already, brilliant album definetly one of my favourite of all time
One of my favorite albums, I’ve yet to hear another album that sounds like this one. The writing is insane too, truly one of the greatest albums of all time. Fast As You Can is one of my favorite songs too
I thought you hated Fiona Apple and women. That’s what all the people were saying like 4 years ago
melon is a misogynist
Best album title ever
Love Ridden is one of my faves of hers
i think 'When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right" is my favourite fiona apple album, even before "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do"
The DRUMS on this album are majestic
Singer, Songwriter, and WHAT ANTHONY?😳
I love this album so much its definitely her most "musical" and tightly produced project.
One of the best albums of all time without a doubt.
Man’s really out here giving us two classic weeks
Can't wait for the review of Daydream Nation tomorrow and Disintegration the next day!
Been waiting so long to hear him say something significant about the cure. I'm not holding my breath though haha
the fact that she had just turned 22 when this came out...
I remember when I was 22 my parents had to sit down with me and ask me to stop masturbating into the lounge curtains. I guess girls do mature quicker.
your spoiling us with the classics 🤝🤝
L Melon for not saying the full title.
this is the best classic week ever
I WAS WAITINF FOR THIS TO DROP THANK YOU
All these picks for classic reviews are really good.
Soundtracks, Demon Days, flockaveli, this: 🔥
Never clicked on a review faster in my life
HAHA, Can't believe. I just was listening this album RIGHT NOW, 😂😂😂. Perfect from first to last song ("I know" is one of the most beautiful/saddest songs ever written)
I got excited thinking the Thumbnail was a classic review for Third Eye Blind's first album...
Best classic week ever
This album is such a 10/10 for me glad to see a classic review!
Immediately disappointed that you won’t say the full title of the album Anthony…
This album changed my life, shaped my mind, opened my view, made me feel understood, seen. I listened to on the bound and I was about to throw up because of how astonishing and sickeningly good it is, I listened to To your love and was literally shaking that song makes me tremble for how good it is I can’t, limp made me weak on my knees and, Indeed, limp; love ridden made me cry my eyes out until I couldn’t see and paper bag gave me back my sight and my view was huge over my life and the world and the cosmos, a mistake made me want to make the mistake to actually keep listening to the track and almost become an ethereal creature for how good it is, that intro and that soft riff are just. Fast as you can made my heart beat as fast as it could and it still does to this day, the slow down, the feeling of underwater-ish voice in the chorus oh my god, the intro to the way things are was so good and enjoyable that it definitely didn’t prepare me for how devastating the rest of the track was going to be, one of my faves. Get gone, don’t even get me started. The piano, the softness juxtaposing the anger in the chorus and her soul basically screaming right at your face in the last chorus (blessing you) and I know literally built me down like a marionette and crushed me until I turned to dust and was blown away, especially by the outro and the softness in “And you can use my ski~in to bury secrets in”. So in the end I learnt that I’m a pawn and that death is the greatest of heights. Life changing, breath taking, masterpiece.
In 25 years I’ve never heard anybody pronounce Jon Brion ‘Bree-yon’
😂😂
if she was named Fiona melon you would have praised it more
Thanks Melon for not only continue doing the classics week, but also expanding it. I was afraid that Melon would shift his attention to the younger audience, which seems to be the majority of his audience judging from the comment sections full of low effort memes and people who only care about the most trendy rappers. I was pleased to see so many people checking in to his livestream on classic week suggestions and giving great suggestions. It is truly a relief to see there are still a lot of music nerds caring about a diverse range of new and old music congregating here.
Loving this prolonged classics week!
So far Antknee has blessed us with nine classic reviews. Four of them are with the yellow flannel, four with the blue flannel and this is the first one with the grey flannel. Confirmed: three more classic reviews to come. Thank you Tony.
Fiona Apple is music for people who don’t know the difference between congas and bongos and don’t want to either
When we gonna get some Broadcast?? We want Broadcast.
OH MY GOD now that this is done Tori Amos Little Earthquakes would be a fucking dream. but i’ve been spoiled so much with joni and fiona, so i won’t get tooooo greedy.
I just listened to this album for the first time last week. I haven't been able to stop listening to it ever since. This is what I call divine timing
This album hits hard if not harder now listening to it as an (older) adult who has been through relationship rings and fires. Been listening to the album again this past year quite a bit and as this cosmically timely review reminds us, it definitely has reached status of classic-dom.
This album inspired Late Registration
joni AND fiona?????? my lord what a week
One of my fave albums. A clear 10. The Melon does get one right every now and then
OMG!!! THIS WEEK IS PEAK MELON!
I still think that the album's title could use a few more words to shell out what it is trying to say.
*clicks on the video just to hear Fantano say the full title*
...dammnit
Still my fave of hers. I think Jon Brion's production / arrangements just fits best. On musical level this is the most ambitious harmonically too.
Fionaaaaa the legend
goat album i dont need baldy to tell me that
💀
Remember when he gave a Fiona Apple album a 7/10 and people were like "clearly this means he hates women"?
That was wild.
Fiona Apple deserves only a 9 and up. Men shouldn’t even be allowed to listen to the goddess Fiona Apple
I’m all for these Classic Week picks, especially this one!
