Greeks do enjoy staying and vacationing inside Greece a lot, that's the good thing when you have as you guys said so many islands that you can visit and i believe the mediterranean is like the best sea for swimming. Usually in the summer most Greeks who live in the mainland travel to the islands. During the winter tho the islands are kinda tough to live in, especially the smaller ones.

Just some more info about Cyprus. Cyprus has been Hellenised a long long time ago. The cypriots with greek origin used to want unification with Greece but the cypriots with turkish origin didn't (bc of the history between Greece and Turkey) that led to tension in the 60s-70s which escalated when the Greek junta decided to overthrow the president of Cyprus which led to the Turkish invasion in 1974. We still love Greece and we still consider our national identity to be greek but Cyprus has been a mixture of both greeks and turks for time immemorial

And joining the army for minimum of 9 months is mandatory but not from 16 years old. Its 18 and you can postpone it for school etc. or never do it if you have a medical or psychological condition

Transportation in Greece is considered great. Most people rely on buses, trains, and ferry's to get around. Greece is also a very car friendly country with great highways. However, once you get to the major cities, the roads become very crowded so most people prefer to use buses or trains to navigate the cities.

Cremations are not allowed in the greek orthodox church. We bury the dead and on rare occasions exhume the body after 5 years. mostly in monasteries (the photo they used I'm pretty sure it's from a monastery, I have never seen this in person) ) or in cities like Athens where the space is limited. even then you can buy the grave or keep renting it as long as you want. Most families have a family grave somewhere.

Most of the mainland is connected by rail and you can also use busses, all the islands are connected although on the big ones you might want to rent a car
There are also islands that do not allow cars but honestly those islands are really small, like a village in the middle of the sea or something 😉

    As Prof. Zolotas said:

I found out, however, that I could make my address in Greek which would still be English to everybody. With your permission, Mr. Chairman, I shall do it now, using with the exception of articles and prepositions only Greek words".

Due to the Greek Orthodox church cremation wasn't a thing up until a few years ago and even now priests won't do the rites as they consider it a sin to be cremated. My father in law was actually cremated as per his wishes in 2020. We take out the dead because the space in the cities cemeteries are extremely limited due to the high population in urban centers. We can buy a big plot for a family grave so everyone will be in there for ever but the cost is too high. So basically we rent the plot and we take them out after 3 years (unless they haven't decomposed in which case they are entombed again or put in a mass plot dedicated for that purpose) we wash the bones in wine as per custom and either ossuary box and in smaller space or they go to the mass grave. It also takes time to find a plot here in Athens. The 3rd cemetery is the most crowded cemetery in Greece. It took 5 days to find space for my mother last March. Also not everything that's been said in the video is true. For example the conscription age is 18 unless the guy is studying in which case it'll be postponed if he wants(my husband preferred to do it at 18 and be done with it) and the time also has fluctuated throughout the years. In my fathers age was 18 months in the army and now it's 9 months. We don't celebrate mostly name days we celebrate both name day and birthday. Kapodistrias that he said was the Leader of the Revolution actually was the first Governor of Greece after the revolution. Us and Turkey is politicaly extremely complicated matter but we've come close to an all out war few times.

Cremation is not allowed in Orthodox church because the Church rejects the end of the human body and the violent treatment against a person's body because he's/she's valuable and loved by his family. Burning a loved one like garbage is not acceptable. It's desecration and unacceptable.

Greeks are hard working people and very underpaid at the same time. We work about 40 to 70 hours per week and minimum wage is about 790 euros which are along way from the European average. So to answer your question about whether we visit or not our 200 plus islands we don't. Some people do some don't. Mainly because of how the transition to and from the islands is located solely in Athens. Northern Greece has beaches within an hour drive so no need to spend a month's salary in tickets for the islands and in hotel fees.

Orthodox do not cremate their deads... that you saw at the video it's not a museum... you can't visit it and is in evry semetery... third... exept Athens and Thessaloniki you need car... you can go from a place to an other with train or bus... but not for your daily life... as we Greeks say... if you go out of the Balcans... you can go everywhere😂 I hope i was useful!

Islands are getting more and more expensive for Greeks. I famously bought tickets for Poland and back for 51€. That would’ve gotten me a modest dinner and a glass of wine in Mykonos. Middle to working class people usually go to seaside towns on the mainland which are way more affordable and with less tourists some times

Commiting suicide is considered a major sin.Priests will not bless the dead body of someone who commited suicide.Cremation is also considered a sin, because according to the Bible, with the second coming of Jesus (the book of revelation as mentioned),the dead will be resurrected and everyone will be judged. This is why destroying the body is a taboo in Christianity.Ofc we know that the body is completely dissolved in less than half a century, unless you do some kind of preservation tactic(which as mentioned in the video, they attempt to do to holy people or saints)

While those are gorgeous, they’ve become so ridiculously expensive, the is NO reason. Hundreds of other places, equally- if not more- beautiful, for a fraction of the price. Well Kudos for the video. I do enjoy it as a native Greek. If you plan to visit Greece keep in mind that the transportation is average. However all parts of country are accessible by car or ferries and of course plane. You gonna love how much we appreciate to call us Hellines and the country Hellas (land of sun). Also, keep in mind that the Republic of Greece gained its independence 200 hundred years ago, so Greece has a diverse and interesting modern history. As for our friends, we have some disputes with Turkey (as you will see from the military presence in some islands) but in the hour of need we are very close to each other like the earthquake that occurred in Turkey.
