Thank you for this video. I just replaced the surface laptop 1 battery. Although I did slightly damage the keyboard alcantara a little while opening. Sad part is that Microsoft acknowledged that the laptop had a defective and swollen battery which is potentially dangerous but were not ready to help in replacement. Very disappointed in them.
I was able to avoid damaging the old puffed up cells by removing them with a flat wooden spatula. The slight curve allowed me to lift a fraction of an inch off the glue every time I lowered the handle (lifting the tip of the spatula under the cell). I was also able to do one cell at a time by first pulling up the center of the battery, which contains the BMS and the 4 cell contacts, shearing off the connections to all cells so they were no longer inter-connected, but all still were still sealed and working. Dropping in the new battery and putting everything back together was childs play, because your video helped me to take everything apart in orderly fashion and without much damage. Laptop is not working as if new. BTW, I had the same issue as others here: Microsoft acknowledged it was a bad design that caused danger to customers, but if you happen to contact them more than 3 years after the order to buy the laptop, their arbitrary decision is to not help you. Our laptop was shipped less than 3 years before I contacted Microsoft, but the order we placed was more than 3 years, so they denied our replacement request. Another interesting thing: The 4 cells in the battery are pair-by pair connected together, so it is 2 series, 2 parallel cells. 3 of the cells were puffed up. Once cell was looking like new. This tells me that the old wives tale that is going around about making sure your battery gets enough exercise or it will puff up, is that - an old wives tale and untrue. I have experience with batteries and have never heard such a thing, what I do know is that the chemical composition in the cell electrolyte is what causes cells to generate gas and puff up and apparently Microsoft got a batch from a Chinese supplier that was just not exactly the best - but some cells were good. That is why we ended up with a 3 year old battery that had 3 puffed up cells and one still looking and working like new. If all 4 cells would have had the electrolyte composition of that cell, the battery would never have swollen and started destroying the laptop. We will see how long the replacement battery will last.
Thanks a lot Sir,I managed to replace the battery without any issues for my 5-year-old surface laptop2, which had battery charging issue!👍 only one small thing: I did not apply the new thermal paste, as I didn’t have it. Hope this will not cause any issue in the future 😅🙏 BTW, I found that the motherboard can be removed without removing the speaker on the right side, this can save some time. And to disconnect the connector of the speaker cable, you need to lift up the small connector from the cable side, pulling out doesn't work😊
Pretty easy, just be careful not to break any cable. Be careful with the wifi radio cable too otherwise it won't fit back when you are reassembling. Mine didn't fit but I left it out regardless, my machine still work perfectly
My battery started smoking when I started to remove it so I'm letting it sit for a while longer before I continue. This is such a shitshow to remove the battery. Needlessly complicated. Poor design on MS's part.
$1700.00 for a device that does this when could buy a high-end gaming laptop for less... RIP. This is what happens when manufacturer sacrifices durability/functionality for trendy design. What really boggles me is that this is known issue in like 90% of surface models for the last 5 years, and people keep buying them, not sure why. I absolutely hate mine, but my job forced it upon me instead of a real laptop...
Great video! I was able to replace my battery and got everything put back together. I’m not sure th fan is coming on even though I verified the cable was connected and secure twice. Does the cooling fan come on at certain times only or is it supposed to be on always when the machine is running. I want to make sure before I use adhesive to stick the keyboard top back on. Thx!
Super helpful... big thanks to you. I have the same problem on my surface. May I also check with you what tools is required to remove the battery pack?
You need a lot of different screw drivers and a pry tool, but if you ordered the battery from AliExpress or Taobao, they should have provided the necessary tools. Lastly, you need loads of patience and a strong heart!
Hmm, i tried and ended up breaking the keyboard ribbon after all 😂 if you see this somehow, would you have any tips on how to insert the keyboard side of the ribbon? 🙏🏼
Hi, Thanks for this video, I have replaced the surface battery as you mentioned but when I powered it on the microsoft logo has shown then the loader and after that a black screen will remain while the keyboard still lights and the camera has verified my face. I tried to connect it to external screen and I found the windows has booted already and it’s working fine. I revisit again all the wires to make sure that the screen is connected properly but the laptop still started with a black screen, do you have any idea how I can fix it
Bro boleh bantu saya ke? Device saya Surface GO 1 Dah replace battery, tapi sekarang dkt tray icon cakap “battery not detected”. Ada idea ke kenapa berlaku mcm ni?

the shields have thermal compound on them, so they are not JUST there for protection. they also dissipate the heat away from components.

Thanks very much. It worked for me. I also noticed that the speakers seem much louder now, presumably because the shielding has been removed?

The shields are for RFI blocking.

What’s the width of the adhesive tape used at the end? 🤔
Lol, don’t think I’ve ever cared to measure that

I was able to do it. I think the hardest part was getting the keyboard off
My surface laptop gets so hot that it shuts down. You mention a lifetime warranty on Surface battery.
