  • We had a little fun dropping a roll of toilet paper from our water rocket. We got the idea after watching Tucker Gott's drop from 2000 feet. ( • What Happens When You ... )

    It has been about 40 years since the days when I flew model rockets. Some were quit large and multi stage but I'd never imagined one could fly water powered rockets more than about house high back in those days. I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now and this video finally inspired me to seek out our local rocketry club. Their first meet isn't until April but I'll be dragging my adult son and a couple of grandchildren of 10 years and 19 years along to take it all in. I'm sure we'll be flying some form of rockets soon, and I'm thinking I'd like to try water rockets. Thanks for inspiring me to get involved.

      Hi Sheldon, welcome back to the hobby! That sounds great that you are wanting to join your local rocketry club. For us it made all the difference about staying in the hobby. I really enjoy having my dad and my boys help out with rocket building and launching. Well... at least they don't complain much. :) Just one word of warning about water rockets.... they are highly addictive!

    Such clear footage. When people video record UFOs they always seem to be caught with potato cameras. You never get a clear shot like these.
    Probably why they are unidentified. Great video thank you 👍🏽

    Express toilet paper delivery seems like a solid bussiness idea nowadays with the coronavirus.

  •  6 лет назад +4

    Very funny idea and great implementation! It's funny how in the second launch the rocket captures the toilet paper, probably even with wind, shared trajectory and similar drag of the toilet paper and parachute played the biggest part. Funny experiments that show the joy of physics. Thanks and keep going!

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks Francisco. Yeah, it was a total fluke that it managed to get caught up in it again. But you are right, with both falling around the same rate in close proximity and drifting in the same direction perhaps it wasn't as unexpected. :)

    •  6 лет назад +2

      Maybe we love physics because it brings some predictability and explanation to life... or just because allow us to make funny things like water rockets :-D

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 лет назад

      Cheers Julien. The organised event is our club's monthly launch. All kinds of rockets get flown at these events, but mostly solid motors. It's always good to catch up with everyone and see people's new projects. I don't think we would have lasted this long without being a member of a rocket club.

      Thanks Julian, it was a lot of fun to try this one. It is really easy to set up, though next time I think we would try 1-ply paper rather than the 2-ply we used. I think you would get a much longer streamer that way. I'm happy with how the drone footage turned out. John is getting good at tracking the rockets now. :)

  • @LateNightHacks
    @LateNightHacks 6 лет назад +4

    here's a tip, disassemble a pen, drop all the ink-bearing barts in a cup of methylated spirit and you'll have a nice ink that you can generously apply to the sides of the roll or just dip. the roll should stay in one piece. you can also do multi step application by a syringe to get very neat patterns
    Some of the ink colours look absolutely gorgeous, need to try a few different brands of pen to find the best result, reds, yellows, greens and purples all look great, even blue and black can look good. one pen should give you 250 mil of decent concentration ink.
    occasionally the ink is incompatible with the solvent and nothing works, I think some are silicone oil/gels and/or xylene based inks. but it doesn't happen often.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 лет назад

      Interesting idea, thanks for the suggestion, we may have to give that a go. :) Would it cause the paper to stick together?

    • @LateNightHacks
      @LateNightHacks 6 лет назад +2

      I knew it worked on paper towels, but wasn't sure about TP. so just did a test. I made two colour batches of ~100mil, applied with pipet to one side. the after giving it about an hour for some of the spirit to evaporate, I applied the second batch to the other and let it all dry up.
      I ended up with a roll with a band of colour on each side and a white strip in the middle, which is what I was going for. btw, the paper was Coles recycled homebrad. I also lightly massaged the roll after each application just to compact it a bit and see if it would stick at all.
      I can experimentally say, my bog-rolls nominally :D my test roll did not stick or deform in a perceptible way.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 лет назад +2

      That sounds cool. Thanks for doing that test, good to know that it didn't affect the unrollability(TM) of the paper. :) Multicoloured roll would definitely be a lot more visible.

    Parachute men make a good payload for water rockets. I taped a pill bottle to the top of a 2l soda bottle, when it reached apogee and flipped over the two parachute men I had in the bottle dropped out and floated down.

    Great fun indeed! Well thought out mechanism which worked first time (unless otherwise edited ;-) )! Excellent drone footage of the first launch - congratulations to your son! Thanks Willie. Yes thankfully it worked first go. I was hoping it wouldn't mess up the normal parachute deployment. :) Catching the paper again was totally unexpected, I guess the rocket cleaned up after itself. Have a great day.

    Could you do colored chalk, some way to dump chalk in various colors?

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 лет назад

      Sometimes chalk powder is used during parachute deployment to create a visible puff to make it easier to spot the rocket at altitude. You could certainly put the chalk powder inside the parachute and then when it deploys and it opens it releases the powder.

      Also, most likely, we in America are so spoiled to have such 'super sized] rolls that they would be aerodynamically destabilizing to the rocket at the diameters yours appear to be built at.
      What is the name of that hollow plastic you use for the fins, and where did you buy it from?

      One of the names the fin material goes by is Corriflute. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrugated_plastic You can typically find it at most sign makers, especially on people's lawns during elections. Sign makers often have offcuts that they will give away for free. We just buy it by the sheet for a few dollars from the local hardware store.
