- Jazz guitarist Bruce Forman discusses his cherished 1946 Gibson ES-350, formerly owned by his mentor, Barney Kessel. In the Fretboard Journal's 50th issue, he recounts the full story of how he acquired the instrument after Kessel's passing.
The guitar sports plenty of wear and customization from Kessel's constant use and gigging. "Where most of us guitar players are like Imelda Marcus with shoes," Forman says, "Barney was very monogamous."

He is the right person to own and play this guitar.
The phrase around 2:30 sounded especially Barney-esque with the upstrokes. Glad to see this historic instrument wind up in the hands of someone who knows how to use it.
This guy is a Gem. What a player OMG. No one better to have that axe.
I saw Barney play it out in Santa Barbara sometime in the 90's. It was a good show with Stephane Grappelli. And yes, I regret every ebony fretboard I ever let go! Nice playing Bruce...
Holy crap, I thought he just had a really accurate custom shop recreation of Barney’s guitar. That’s Barney’s ACTUAL guitar. Wow. 😦
This instrument made an appearance on Perry Mason 1961 the Jazz Episode Barney was very young and appears several times with the old Gibson complete with electric tape covering Gibson logo....
Wow, what a privilege, that machine has so much history, glad that you are adding to it Bruce. Nice work, cheers N&J🎸
There’s truly nothing like hearing great guitar life stories. Or like in this case, the latest update as one continues! Thanks for sharing it!😊 BTW, great FB Summit in Chicago. Loved everything about it and spending quality time with my twin brother. 👍
Barney Kessel and the great Guitars influenced a whole lot of Rock guitarists as well as Jazz supremos.
Great video! Thanks.
Beautiful
Legend
It couldn't be in better hands.
Nice thanks! What kind of pickup?
It's in the right hands, all right.
I wonder what Bruce has planned for the guitar when he no longer needs it. Does it keep on chugging or does it get hung up??
I hope he passes it on to another great player we get to watch and enjoy
Maybe Julian Lage would be cool
I'll take it

Dude, that’s EXACTLY who should inherit it.
@@yogsenforfoth5948 He’d give it the respect it deserves and I’m sure lots of videos we could watch him playing it
