  • It was a show that nobody was particularly excited for, and according to new rumours swirling around, Amazon's deal to produce a new Lara Croft Tomb Raider show headed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge may be a dead end. Will the show ever happen, and will Waller-Bridge ever produce anything from her $60 Million Amazon deal?

This is what irks me SO MUCH about Indiana Jones (and Lara Croft?) haters. They're not breaking into buildings or joining the black market. They're venturing into territory that clearly no one or almost no one has been in for a long time. They literally risk life and limb to recover priceless artifacts of immense cultural value that would otherwise be left to rot, rust, and disintegrate into oblivion. Then in Indy's case (IDK about Lara), instead of keeping them for himself or selling them to the highest bidder, he gives them to museums for everyone to study and appreciate. That's the most selfless, generous thing he could do! If you wanna debate which country's museums get dibs, fair enough. But giving it to the "wrong" country is small potatoes against all the obvious good he does. Just... gaaaah.
And before someone says, "You're white/European/colonizer, you don't get a say," dude. I'm Catholic. The Last Crusade (and arguably Raiders) is about him "stealing" from my culture. I am uniquely qualified to speak on this. And if someone found the Holy Grail and took it to a museum, I'd be like, "What a legend! We owe him for life!"

Hayley Atwell is voicing the Lara Croft character in the animated series, Tom Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, that is soon to be released on Netflix. I can't help but think this is a missed opportunity of using Atwell's full talent. The woman should not be relegated to just voicing an animated version of Croft. Hayley Atwell looks more like the traditional Lara Croft than the animated character she is voicing. If they are going to make a live action version of Lara Croft, they need cast Hayley Atwell as the character, and make full use of Atwell's curvy figure and sexual charm. For anyone who doubts her abilities, just look at her performance alongside Tom Cruise in the latest Mission Impossible movie, where she played a seductive and capable thief.

Instead we get, "What's this about? Not anymore!! Let's throw some lesbians in there, but not the hot kind, and some DEI racism, let's make all the males either stupid or evil. What? What people seem to forget about the REAL Ms. Croft is that she didn't always get her hands on the artefact - in the very first game, she was forced to destroy the Scion because of the threat it posed to humanity. When she did get what she was after, it would usually come at significant cost (Last Revelation comes to mind, even aside from the ending). There is an argument regarding TR3 in that Lara does mercilessly gun down lowly security guards and night watchmen who are just doing their job, but there is an argument to be made that since she is in possession of at least one of the meteorite pieces by that point that she herself is being corrupted which would explain her ruthlessness during the game. When Willard has the pieces and throws himself into the pit, even despite the PS1's blocky visuals, Lara is visibly horrified. So yeah, the argument that OG Lara is one-dimensional eye-candy just doesn't hold weight.

I want to defend the original character of Lara a little, she's a thrill seeker more than a treasure seeker, because of her archeology background Tombs are where she gets those thrills, now i'm only half defending her because yes she does want to get her hands on the treasure, not for personal gain she's already rich, but her original plans are ALWAYS upended when she needs to get the treasures before the bad guys to save the world, that's actually what Tomb Raider is about at least originally. In the 3rd game you can find these objects of power locked away in her mansion which is actually a really dangerous thing for her to do considering the criminal organisations and deities that are after these objects, she's putting herself in a lot of danger to keep the world safe.
Whenever someone suggests Lara is bad for stealing treasures... yeah on the surface they're not wrong, but if she didn't everyone would either die or be enslaved, the fact that NOBODY talks about this does the character a massive disservice.
