The general thought is that succulents like lots of sun, its not true for many and we keep nearly all of ours out of the hot afternoon summer sun. Arrangement of different succulents need particular care.
Johnny A, I’m your avid fan here in chicago, usa. I like your explaination. easy to understand. I’m a succulent lover and a very new to this kind of flower. I live in an apartment so I have it as an indoor plants only but I have already 100 species more or less and planning to repot/replant soon. I learned a lot from you. more power.
Do you ever use what is sold in the UK as chick grit (2-5 mm diameter) for top dressing small plants? I find it helpful to let young Lithops etc settle in after transplanting. Also good to add to a general gritty potting mix. For general reference, I’m talking from the southern UK climate experience.
Hello, great video. I liv in UK and I don't think we have grow max here. Please can you tell me the NPK ratio in Grow max and needed for houseleeks so I can find an equivalent. Thank you
Watering Sempervivum arachnodeum like that will damage the cobweb. Then it will need to grow again with the growth. No? Well, it gets damaged, when water falls on it from my experience. Your video was so motivating to plant them all together. Mines are in separate pots
Hello Anna, this is probably true for Sempervivum arachnoideum, however that species not used in the bowl, we will mention that in the notes ASAP. Thanks for the comment.
This is spookily relevant. I’ve just bought my first Sempervivum off the cuff when visiting an independent nursery whilst visiting brother-in-law near Hereford ! Thank you for confirming my proposed potting mix. I’ve got a tall, dark blue glazed pot which will showcase the acid green fuzzy Semp. Can they be propagated from leaf cuttings, like Echeveria?
You'll probably have figured it out in the last two months, semps love to give off babies on little vines from the mother. Hence the nickname "Hen & Chicks". Just snip these off and pop them on top of some gritty soil and they'll root. I even found one growing in a tomato growbag last week, the wind or an animal must have carried it there!
If you get succulents from a refular garden Center, should you still keep them in the potting Mix you bought them in? I was always told you're supposed to repot New plants and get rid of as much of the old earth as possible
We would always repot with succulents from a regular garden centre for three reasons. You don't know how long they have been in the potting mix. I may be degraded. You can make sure a proper succulent potting mix is being used. You can check that the plant has a good root system. So no root rot or other problems. Having said that some garden centres are better then others....
They were all sempervivums and the choice was made on colour and included Sempervivum 'Hairy Grey' Sempervivum Bronco Sempervivum Gabrielle Sempervivum Irazu Sempervivum arachnoideum
Hello Margaret, good point, however the idea in this video was to show how to make the sempervivum bowl, if you wish to see Sempervivum varieties then this could be the the video for you ruclips.net/video/-hRG1oXflkA/видео.html
Your tips are wonderful. I have a question regarding this video... great tip to fill pot with polystrene foam... However have read this is a "hazardous substance" for humans.. what about succulents & cacti??
As far as we know its not hazardous to plants. The only reason to use it is to make the bowl lighter, which is not always necessary, however in a situation where you need to move a large bowl around regularly, as in a changing commercial nursery display, then it is one solution.
Make sure the dish has very good drainage, a free draining cactus and succulent mix. Plant as in the video and water once.... then not again until the soil in the planter is very much on the dry side. It depends on the climate and if they receive any rain as to how much you need to water. Watering now helps the soil mix to have good contact with the roots.
The humidity and heat do get to them. In the tropics they need very good airflow and morning sun or filtered light rather than direct hot sun, and still most struggle. I will see if any varieties are better than others for the tropics and post it in the notes in a week or two.
I don’t understand why you won’t tell the specific potting mix and ratios. Don’t you want others to have their succulents thrive? I realize different locations may need to adjust it to suit their climate differences. It would still give a good starting point. Again, PLEASE share 😊 🌱💕
Hello Kathlene, The whole purpose of making these is to help people grow succulents, and indeed we are looking at making a video on succulent potting mixes as a seperate video soon. Mostly what is used is a general succulent potting mix , pine bark and coarse and semi coarse washed river sand (no fines). And I will get the ratios for a general mix for you next time I see James. In some videos we do explain in detail the mix used. For example at around 6:00 in this Haworthia Video. ruclips.net/video/laa1YFTtnAM/видео.html.
johnny A Thank you! I will check that video again and look forward to getting your reply from James. I thought the one in the Haworthia vid was modified to please the ph or something for that particular plant. Most of all, thank you for getting back to me 😊
@@kathlenemcclain9044 Yes the Haworthia one is different as they a little more fussy, also some of them are expensive so need a little more TLC. Will get back to you with the other mix. Also James will most likely be happy to do a more detailed look at succulent potting mixes, as soon as this social isolation eases a little. Stay safe and happy gardening.
@@kathlenemcclain9044 Here is the Mix currently used by James Lucas 4 parts 6mm pinebark 4.5 parts 3 - 6 mm pine bark 1 part propagation sand 0.5 part coarse sand Hope this helps.
johnny A you’re welcome. I put my succulents in separate pots though, so they are often quite small. I don’t think my cats would manage to knock over one of those big heavy arrangements. Quite practical if you have to move them when the season changes
Why don't you tell us what the plants are? I find myself saying I would like that one...and that one...but I have no idea what they are and you don't tell us. No fair!!!
You make a good point, however the choice in this case was mainly about how to make the dish. We will try to put a list together for the notes below the video. Perhaps you can take a look at this video ruclips.net/video/-hRG1oXflkA/видео.html for inspiration
Great information. I thought they would prefer full sun. A hard lesson learned here in Western Sydney, nearly a whole dish lost to the hot 40 + sun.

Very informative!!! Please make a detailed video on making this potting mix or list the ingredients explicitly. Would be a great help

Beautiful succulents and arrangement.

Lovely job and succulent can u tell me what’s the fertilizer name plz
Hi, love the large bowl. Can you please name the names of the sempervivums?
Found the link, it didn't have the ones I have included in it unfortunately.

No leaf cuttings for Sempers, but as the person above mentioned, they do throw off a number of 'chicks' which can be separated out.

@@johnnyAGardening Thk you... I have very weak arms and so anything I can do to lighten the weight of these pots is a sure +++++ thks again
@@acolon5580 Also some potting mixes are lighter than others, however they do usually need more frequent watering.

Does he use the same potting mix for all varieties of succulents or is this potting mix specifically for his Sempervivums?
A general mix for semps, more specific for Haworthia, Lithops ansd some others.
Will that live outside where there are summer rains?
As long as the drainage is good, however it depends on the climate, are you in a tropical area ?
Do you sell to the states
Sorry Succulents Australia does nit send to the states. Valley Succulents and Ramsay Succulents are worth a try
nice video... just want toask why is it so hard to keep Sempervivums alive in the tropics? is it because of the hot weather?

As a cat owner I have to recommend making your pots heavier, not lighter 😂
