Stumbled across your station and enjoying your video's. Another easy way to get the hens, chicks or even sedums established in a stone wall is to wrap the stems or any roots you may have in burlap, works great when you have gravity working against you in a vertical position when you need that little extra grip until they take hold.
i loooove that tip!! i have some areas that ive struggled to get them established for that exact reason, i will definitely utilize your suggestion! thank you
Hi Devlin, what a nice video, the varieties you are showing are gorgeous...Lucky you to have all those wonderful P.A. rocks to artfully tuck them into! 🤗🌱
I’m in Colorado & I have lots of hens & chickens & the way u show them are a great idea…. I love succulents - show some more succulents - different varieties .. so we can grow different things .I love how u explain things …
As Always, Excellent Advice ! Love the look of your rock wall with the hen & chicks naturalizing. You might consider adding some Portulaca to that Hot/Dry raised bed....for a simple Pop of color @ eye level.
This is so helpful! I took several of my friends tall flower stalks. Fortunately I also got some of the babies! Since it doesn’t seem like that incredible flower produces any babies. Thank you!
Hi Devin; FYI: Green Pins from the nursery also will help the succulents stay in place. They look like staples. My local nursery has had Mr. Dirt sitting out in front of their nursery for at least 20 years. He is a wire form made of Hens and chicks and crassula. The nursery changes his baseball cap and t-shirt every year and he wears a pair of dark sun glasses sitting in a chair with his leg crossed up and work boots that have holes in them with more succulents coming out of the boots. Mr. Dirt is so cool I decided to make a Miss Dirt which I have completed the whole body but the head has been a challenge. I have the hair made of thick copper wire that will go on last. I used burlap, coco choir(sold by the foot) and moss. Definitely takes time and patience bending all the wire. The further I get the more pleased I am and she is almost done!
I love the way you have planted your hens and chicks in crevaces in your gardens. It looks great, and I love the red colors of the plants. I have them growing all around my gardens, both in ground, and in pots. They are very easy to grow. Thanks for another great video.
I ordered 4 sets this year and I planted some in a hanging basket that have openings all around it, I sure hope it works well for me, yours look awesome.
I am in Canada (zone 3) and they do quite well as an outdoor plant. I have had sedum with hens and chicks as a green roof for my potting shed for 5 years. Every Spring I take it down to inspect them, thin them out a little and remove any casualties, give to my friends and neighbors then back they go. Sadly there are some sempervivum that die after blooming...2 years later.
Hens and chicks! I also saw your butterfly bush, I want one of those as well!! THANKS!!!! My Jade and Christmas cactus plants, by the way, are doing very well outside on the deck. I put them out for a few hours for a few days and now they are out all the time. thanks!!!!
I never knew what sedum was but found two types on my road, sort of in the woods. I took a small amount and planted it in my yard. The next winter the snow plows cut through the patch that was there and it was gone. Glad I saved some because now they are ground cover all over my yard, especially in the rocky areas. One type flowers yellow and the others reddish-pink.
You are the best I live in Toronto zone 6B yesterday I bought a pot of hens and chicks for 50% off, looking for a location, I got good ideas, thanks and I subscribed to you now, thanks for sharing ,
I too stumbled on ur channel about hens & chicks. BEST plant channel EVER.. Quick to the INFO and PLENTY of info. I have had horrid results with these succulents. Thanks for All the info.! I’ll be back! 🪴🌱
I add sand to my potting mix in a terra cotta pot for my Hens and chicks . I hope that is a good thing to do! It’s for drainage . I also add slow release fertilizer
I bought these last year and planted them in the ground. I think their location meets all the required conditions but they have been slow to grow. There are a few babies, but I am hoping they get larger this season.
Planted these in. Zone seven orth Carolina in hard rocky soil in sun three yrs and they spread hugely and even flower. No mulch o fertizers. O. Nothing. An take hard freezes and long hot summers. Gooduck.
This was a wonderful video! I had to watch six other videos on hen and chicks to get the info I got out of yours. I subbed now and will check out your channel.
I just found your Channel today and I live in Bucks County Pennsylvania. I heard you say you lived in Northern East Coast. It's funny I'm actually going to buy some of these today from a place called Bountiful Gardens in Ewing New Jersey. They sell them $25 for $5. And they're pretty large. I intend to do something very creative outside with them. Anyhow I haven't even listened to this video yet and I just wanted to comment that I'm grateful to have found it and I look forward to what you have to say
@@plantvibrations oh it's an amazing Nursery we definitely be worth to drive. Man I wish I could post pictures in the comment section to show you what I created today. I found a piece of Driftwood along the Delaware River and dug it out and planted cactuses and chicks and hens in it it looks really awesome
You look like Leonardo DiCaprio . Love your videos. Semps are my favorite too . What zone are you in ? I’m in zone 7 . I’ve made a VERY gravely bed . I’m concerned it may be too gravely . It’s 70% or so 1/4 inch minus gravel and the rest Coco Loco potting mix with some Sandy loam . What mix do you use in your beds ? Thank you 😊
My hens and chicks started out from my grandmother years and years back i got some from my mom that were my grandmothers but im wondering who to plant the seedling from the roosters i have
Who would win the war on my rock wall, the Sempervivum or the Lilly of the Valley. AND, when I have a nice pile of hens & chick and the 3 on top are huge, can I transplant them or will they just die?
I live in the Uk. We get a fair bit of rain. Would they survive okay outside in these conditions? Or shall I keep them indoors? I love them! Edit - I’m in zone 9a if that makes a difference.
I have an indoor pot of Hen and Chick. How is it best to care for it. Some of them have dried leaves, should they be removed? Chick's are everywhere. How often and how much do I water them? Thx C
I wish I could take care of hens and chicks like you but we don't have good luck with them they always dry out at some point, then by the fall their gone. But I really love the plant tho.
I live in Vermont, zone 5, and it's December. The temps are in the 20's & 30's, but it will get much colder in the coming months. Is it okay to transplant them outdoors now or should I wait until spring?
I have 2 quick questions for you. 1/. Are these hardy enough too survive a MN winter (zone 4), we have 2 feet of snow outside right now. So wondering if they would survive in ground or a container. Or should I grow then in a container only and bring them inside over winter? 2/. Would the same care/needs apply for the 'Cobweb Houseleek', (Sempervivum Arachnoideum)?
Hmm they’re going to be right on the cusp, I know they can be Hardy to zone 4 at times, definitely Hardy to zone 5 for sure. However all plants lose hardiness by 1-1.5 zones when planted in containers vs the ground. You can definitely plant them in pots and bring them in for the absolute coldest times of the year but they perform best when allowed to experience a good amount t of cold
At the coldest days of the year, (now for this year), whether planted in ground or in containers, they would be burried under the snow, so should be insulated against most of the cold, especially the NW winds right out of Canada. Maybe I should try an experiment. Gather up some pups, plant some in the ground, and others in two pots. Bring one pot inside when temps get down to freezing. Then see what happens with the rest.@@plantvibrations
I live in ontario Canada and I have one planted outside in the garden. We get lots of snow and it looks happy and healthy the whole time. I know this is an old post but if you havnt done it I suggest you do! Good luck!!
I accidentally found out some of my mom’s hens survived a very cold Chicago winter.. so now I want to find some more kinds.. they’ve been outside for years now
Hi from Canada just found your channel and ill be liking and subscribing so much info and very detail oriented thankyou. I do have a question though. I have a few hens that have grown to bloom this year, we just bought this house so its my first year with them. What should i do with the hen once its done blooming and died? Do i need to prune it? Or does it just fall off? I dont want to ruin it. Thank you again!!
Hi! When they flower that signals the end of their life. I tend to just leave them be bc they likely have some babies attached to them. You can definitely cut the spent flowers off though
Hen and chicks heaven LOL
Truth!!
Hen and chick heaven made me lol.
Hahaha
:-)
Thank you for showing them growing in different arrangements and places. Best Hens and Chicks video I have found!

I had no idea I could plant outside & they would last thru the winter here in 7a! Thanks!
yes easily!!
I'm in 6b and no problem lasting, they just don't grow much... except in the summer. I guess in 7a you're good.

Wow, nice idea. Hopefully the squirrels would leave them alone. Mine is a little bit struggling.

Definitely outside! In a rockery would be the best

If they are sempervivum I would rly suggest putting them outside! No need to remove the dried leaves
I live in zone 9, can they survive here?
Hmm it may be too warm in your zone
I love hens and chicks. I have 2 but they are droopy but 1 is actually growing a baby. How can I get them to raise up?
Droopy? Is it inside? They need to be outdoors
@plantvibrations that'd be why. I have them inside 😏 Thank you
What kind of soil or potting mix do they prefer?
They love very well draining often rocky soil
I wish I could take care of hens and chicks like you but we don't have good luck with them they always dry out at some point, then by the fall their gone. But I really love the plant tho.
ahhh shucks!

You’ll want to wait. Without a gradual shift to cooler temps they’ll freeze and get mushy
Good video. What was the name of the changing color hen ,& chicks? So you saying after the mama plant flowers she dies? Ty
Yes the mama dies after flowering. Many of the different varieties change color, I believe that one was Ruby heart
Do the Hens stay alive if the babies are constantly trimmed off?
yes they absolutely will
My dad always wonders why I call my lil plant prop “Jimmy.” It’s none of his business where I got that from 😂
Hehehehe

If it is a deciduous shade spot then yes, and evergreen shade then no. Semi shade is all good
Just make sure no sitting moisture
Are the hens and chicks deer resistant?
Yes but squirrels will move them sometimes

Absolutely

Leave outside. They. An take anything excep too much water.inez sun.
