Thanks for the video. My sons GBA SP fell out of his back pack and a big chunk of the shell broke off on the corner by the cartridge slot. I got a new one ordered. This video is way more thorough and detailed compared to some of the other videos on RUclips to replace the shell. After watching this I'm pretty confident that I'm up to the task.
Well I opened my gba sp and didnt break it on my first try and I didnt use a tutorial XD idk how I didnt break the ribbon cable guess I'm too careful with shit
The reason your hinges didn’t feel right is because you forced them out when they were in the wrong position. They need to be pushed out while the hinge is in the open detent position so that both slots line up. They also need to be reinserted this way. You should also keep track of which is the left hinge and which is the right hinge since they seem to be colored differently in some systems. You can use the part that fits inside of a Bic Round Stic ink pen to retract the clips and push out the hinge. If it doesn’t push it out on its own, well, it’s hollow so you can still push through it with a screwdriver or something. You’ll have to trim off the cone part of the Bic pen to fit it in the left hinge because of a rib that blocks you but, once in, you open the hinge to the detent position and push with something that reaches all the way through from the right hinge. Alternatively you can use a 3D printed piece that Makho released a few days ago. It does the same thing to release the hinges without destroying a Bic ink pen. :)
@@joaomarcosalvesaude1907 Glad it helped! FWIW, I cut together an video using some old footage I recorded years ago and uploaded it around the time I made that comment since I was seeing a lot of people do it wrong around then. :)
Thank you so much , I bought my wife a nasty looking GBA for her birthday for $20 , got a new shell on Amazon for $5 . I was having the hardest time with the hinges. But this video helped so much. She was so happy. In turn , I'm happy
The amount of force I had to apply to get my old hinges into a new shell was ridiculous and unbelievable. I can't believe I didn't completely shatter the shell in the process.
That's because he did it wrong in the video and there are literally more people out there telling you the wrong way than the right way. Look up the Bic Round Stic and Makho 3D printed tool methods. Those are correct. Even if you are just going to force them out, make sure you do so with the screen open to the detent position and do not mix up left and right.
i managed to collect like 4 of them in a 2 weeks time be asking around by some friends. All of them front lit though, but i have a DS lite, gb micro and 2 modded original advances for backlight gba gaming :) They shouldn't be too hard to find

@@shadeymcbones6707 I know this is an old comment, but one thing the sp has over the micro is backwards compatibility with gameboy games, so it's also great for backlit gameboy games. :)
Thanks for the great video it really helped me rebuild my SP. Just a tip to anyone coming across this comment, if you're doing a shell replacement it really helps to tap the screw holes before actually screwing it all together. And get a nicer screwdriver the one mine came with worked but not very well.
Pro tip: I recommend using the correct bits but I found out today that you can use a 1.5 Flat head and it works fairly well. (If it's not 1.5 it's like 1.3)
vicma praur that's not entirely true. My pearl blue AGS-101 that I got when I was 12 had never been opened until a couple months ago and I definitely have the white battery.
Fake Dragonite yeah but still the blue one only came with ags 101, never said that ags 101 only cam with the blue one, also are you sure there was still the cellophane on it?
I start off with the lid closed and push in the hinges until it gets "stuck". Then I slowly open the lid while pushing in both hinges until they slide in easily.
Awesome video!! For those wondering how to get the second hinge in, you really just need to push that sucker in there like reverse birthing. Also raising the speaker pins did wonders for sound clarity.
Thank you for this. I got a 101 for a good price from a work friend, but the shell was trashed. Spend $20 on a transparent shell and now it looks amazing. It reminds me of the transparent purple GBC from back in the early days of my childhood. You're awesome.
How did you deal with the hinges? The video is incorrect. You need to remove and insert them while open to the detent position. Makho shared a design for a 3D printed tool for this and there is also the Bic Round Stic method.
Thanks, definitely the most thorough and helpful video I could find on the GBA SP tear down. I needed a little more help with the springs on the L and R placement but figured it out on my own.
Hey Colin nice video again! It's cool you included where you break the plastic on the original case. That's very honest to show this kind of incident, which can happen even to experienced people when you deal with cheap plastic parts, so kudos for this!

Thanks for the vid!. I purchased a beat up Red SP off ebay that powered but would not load games. Thinking the fix would be a simple one by cleaning contacts. While the water evident paper hadn't changed color it was pretty filthy. Attempted multiple cleanings using a plastic razor blade wrapped in a eyeglass cleaning cloth soaked in 91% iso alcohol to no avail. Although a long shot I used your idea of fine grit sand paper then blasted with contacted cleaner and vola! It hath returned to life! Now I too am shell shopping.
The Game Boy Advance was my first ARM-based video game system. Practically every one of Nintendo's portable systems from the GBA onwards were based off of an ARM processor.
Hi Colin, discovered your channel yesterday and I'm already hooked! Really admire the thought you put into both your mods and your videos. Learning a lot too! Great stuff
Followed this and a couple other guides on re-shelling and thought I'd chip in a discovery that helped - I was having a really hard time getting the hinges into the new shell until I tried lifting up the front cover (as if opening the console) while pressing in (lightly) on the hinge cap - at some point just before the console would be fully open, I felt the hinge budge in a bit. Easing it back and forth over this point while gradually increasing the amount of pressure on the hinge was how I finally got the damn thing in, with way less pressure than my failed attempts to just force them in. Hopefully this helps somebody!
I upgraded mine with the legend of zelda shell you commonly see on ebay. I made a few of your mistakes with the speaker and forgetting the battery cover nut. I also didn't get the ribbon cable all the way secure the first time but now I have it working beautifully.. it's been working for almost years. the switch is a bit finicky at times but I just have to make sure it's all the way engaged "on" or "off".
They are ABSOLUTELY flimsy. Not worth it in my opinion. You can get a MINT condition AGS-001 on Ebay for 20-25 bucks. Remove that 001 screen sell it back on Ebay for a couple extra bucks. Then buy this screen. Link below. It's an IPS lcd screen with 4x the pixel density than the 101 screen. Plus 5 brightness modes. You'll love it. Plus you'll have an original shell. WOW this one was so much helpful!!! I watched another video and he didn't fully sperate the screen housing, and by following his steps which i thought were correct, accidently broke my ribbon cable. This method was so much more safer and easier, and correct.
Thanks for the video! Also had an Onyx SP break on me, the hinges cracked and the glue i tried was horrible sloppy, making it even worse. Fortunately the battery/sticker part of the shell was undamaged so I just kept that part and used a gold Zelda shell for the rest. Looks kinda like the early 3DS models with the black underside :).
Love the video's mate, just got into watching them yesterday and am looking forward to seeing more. It's really getting me into the idea of trying to fiddle around with my old consoles, might try and repair my N64 Power Supply when I have the time!
I originally purchased a boxed Pearl White GBA SP with Metroid Zero Mission from Circuit City (Black Friday 2004), so it definitely existed. I'm pretty sure they also had it in Japan as a Final Fantasy bundle or something. I don't know if the Pearl White color was a Circuit City exclusive in the USA (probably) but the Metroid Zero Mission Black Friday bundle certainly was (sticker on box for the bonus game). The thing is, my current CIB Pearl White GBA SP is actually an AGS-101 in a replica shell like yours. ;) I had no interest in the Pearl White GBA SP because I already had my launch unit (Cobalt), a Target Black Friday-exclusive DKC bundle (Lime Green), and a Limited Edition (Classic NES). I bought several that year for friends, family, and Salvation Army kids. One parent with a little girl insisted that I substitute a "girl game" so I gave Yoshi's Island instead (another awesome game) leaving me with a Metroid Zero Mission dupe. The friend I gifted one to threw away his box at my place, so I scavenged it. Months later another friend gave me a Pearl Blue AGS-101 in surprisingly rough shape with a broken screen. Crazy that it had been mistreated so much when they were still in stores! I had a huge setback where my Classic NES Limited Edition and Target-exclusive Lime Green GBA SP units were stolen so I got replacement parts for the broken AGS-101 and restored it with a Pearl White shell to complete my CIB. Because the Classic NES Limited Edition replacement shells recently appeared I have converted it to that to restore my other CIB. I may put my old Cobalt into the Pearl White shell/box but it's having strange issues with the sound (some sounds are much louder and the audio cuts out when I press Start or Select).
I made a frankengameboy because of this video. I had one with a broken screen and my parents had one with a ruined motherboard and battery. I took them both apart put the good screen with a good base made one working gameboy advanced SP instead of two broken ones.
Storm Trooper SP housing is what I thought. I have recently replaced the battery's in 2 of my SP's with a higher milliamp battery. The old battery's didn't last that long and when I looked around I found higher performance battery's for the SP. The replaced battery's seem to be giving me a good amount more battery life, and also seem to charge faster.
hey i think i may have diagnosed my problem and this seems like a good place to leave this: on my gba sp, all gameboy carts seem ever so slightly loose and the slightest bump causes the game to lock up, its 100% fine with advance games with zero problems. also occasionally it boots into "advance mode" even with a original gameboy cart installed in the slot. i got to looking at it and there is a switch inside the cart slot on the sp that is bumped "closed" when a original gameboy cart is installed. because of the placement of the switch and the shape of the original gameboy carts, it closes this switch which tells the gba sp to boot into original gameboy mode. sometimes mine even boots into gba mode even if there is a game boy cart installed. the switch in my sp seems to maybe have a broken hinge point on the switch because as i close it manually with a small pick i can see it cock and turn sideways as it closes completely as if its double hinged but their is no way they would design it that way. that slot switch on the sp, should move exactly like a door to your house, it should swing close on one axis, not start closing on one axis and then kick sidways as mine does where the top corner of the door ends up scraping the ceiling of your house. my guess is that this switch, when open should go into gba mode, when closed it goes into gb mode, when the hinge breaks on the switch i bet it can inadvertently "toggle" back between open and closed which flips the mode back and forth between gba and gb mode which causes the game to crash and occasionally even boot to gba mode when it has a gb game installed. sorry for long post, but i have heard no one else talk about this anywhere, i have made a video a video of the diagnosis, and upload but i suspect the only fix is a new pin header assembly and lots of fun soldering, which i may never do as it plays gba games just fine, buts driving me nuts knowing its malfunctioning
That she'll looks more silver than white from my end. Every time you said it was white I was scratching my head. The black buttons were a better choice though. Is it much of a pain to remove that glass LCD lens? I just acquired two SPs and both have some dust particles or something behind them. It's annoying. I want to do a clean up on both and a shell replacement on one, so I'd like to tackle that at the same time.
The blue battery is stock and the other one is a replacement that you can buy. It works flawlessly as far as I know but I don’t personally have one. I remember my old sp had a blue battery and I got it at Best Buy when they were brand new
I've recently completed a shell replacement on a couple gameboy advances non sp using kits purchased from ebay. Missing from those kits were the membranous buttons for the start and select function. I havn't been able to locate any sellers of this piece, without having to purchase a full console and remove them. Any tips on where I might find one?
The reason you broke your original shell's hinge is because you attempted to remove it while the shell was closed. What you need to do is slightly wedge the hinge out so that a slit is visible on the side of the hinge's outer cover, OPEN the shell, and then use a small flathead screwdriver to slide the hinge out using the slit. It's smooth and requires very little force for it to slide out. Just an FYI to avoid breaking another shell as I see you're still not opening your new shell when you're messing with the hinges.
Hey Colin. I recently discovered your channel and have immense admiration for your know-how, thoughtful commentary, and the production value of your videos. I have a tricky situation I'd appreciate your input on if you'd be so kind. I have two second-hand Graphite AGS-101s I purchased (having great nostalgia for my long lost original unit). I did a lot of shopping around/homework/research before settling on these particular two. (One of them even came complete with the box & included literature, all in perfect condition.) So: one unit has a perfect (I mean PRISTINE) outer shell as it was used solely in a case.. but the inner shell is slightly scratched. The second of the two units has an utterly perfect inner shell.. but the outer shell has a few scratches. You can probably imagine where I'm going with this. Ultimately, I'd love to disassemble and combine the two: all four scratched up parts to make a scratched-unit.. and all four pristine pieces to make a fully perfect unscratched-unit. Your video on shell replacement was most helpful, and I've watched a few others as well. My fear is causing damage while removing the rubber nubs from the screen side of each case. Since I'm planning to keep both (with great deference to the pristine parts) I'm extremely hesitant to go to either of them with a craft knife. I'm stumped, and so far I just can't conceive of another tool/way to keep the parts safe as a result of this endeavor. At this point I feel like I have no choice but to leave the two units as-is and just accept the partial flaws of each. Any ideas?
I totally understand the dilemma. You could consider some alternative tools to remove those screw covers, like a fine needle, or you could pick up a cheap SP to practice on. Otherwise, you just need to figure out what would bother you more -- the scratches you have now, or the results of a mistake while removing the screw covers. If I were you, I'd go for it. The only thing I found difficult (and made a mistake with) was removing the screen hinge mechanisms. Good luck!
A needle actually sounds perfect - thanks for the suggestion. I've been thinking of getting a second hand unit for my nephew, so that may end up being good practice material. I'm definitely thinking I'll go ahead with the shell shuffle. Cheers!
Good video. Thumbed up. You narrate well. I might give this a try. I accidentally broke a hinge on my '101 but I think it had a shell replacement already any way.
Hello, I just picked up a GBA SP AGS101, I was wondering through your experience modifying GBA's, if the backlight on the AGS101 can be separated from the LCD (just like the backlight on the Gameboy Pocket and Original GB kits)? On mine it appears there are specks of dirt between the LCD and backlight. Pretty sure it's not dead pixels because it looks like it's on a lower plane from the LCD pixels. Just wondering how much can the AGS101 LCD screen be taken apart. Thank you, and your videos are very informative.
I've recently replaced my gameboy advance shell and accidently touched the inner screen. It's covered in finger prints and streaks! What's the easiest way to get rid of them? I watch all your vids on gameboy mods there the best instructional videos on RUclips in my opinion :)
Hi have you come across any 101's with inverted colors? Also, do you know what the little gold dial is thats adjustable from the battery compartment? Seems like a clarity control but not sure if it has anything to do with the inverted color problem.
Thanks for this video - i followed it to install my touch screen kit i got from ali-express - didn't do any of the soldering. the screen is night and day compared to the old one and even the replacement shell is good quality. the only part which took me ages was removing the old hinges from the old gba sp to put in the new shell. no idea why they dont just supply new hinges with the replacement shells? very odd.
My cobalt blue SP is acting strange. That's the only way I can describe it. It never fails to turn on but the light flickers from green to red then sometimes either freezes or powers off a few mins into gameplay. I assumed it was the battery dying so I replaced it but nothing changed. Any idea what you think could be the culprit? Thanks
I did this and I put the speaker in the wrong way and it broke, but I still replaced the shell, and then I ordered a new speaker and put it in my game boy and now I have a really cool red game boy advance sp. but there was a week where I played my game boy without sound.
After I did my shell replacement my Left and Right buttons of the DPad stopped working properly. I need to press them really hard for them to work. I will try to put everything in the original case again and see how it goes, it might be the quality of the case but if not, how hard or easy is to fix those buttons on the board?
So a few years ago I had dropped my gba sp and the screen no longer works. There are no cracks on the screen, and it lights up when it turns on but nothing will display, just a white screen. Is there any way to fix this similar to the way you can fix the speaker by pulling up the metal "spring terminals" (11:00)? Or is this permanent damage and would require me to buy a new screen?
I messed up the hinges... I guess I was lucky enough to remove them without cracking the previous shell, but I ordered some new hinges anyway, just to be safe, since I think I broke some of the little plastic teeth at the bottom of the hinges... I have a few questions, though... 1) Are aftermarket SP hinges worse in quality than the original hinges? 2)Are there any good ways to transfer the original sticker at the back without damaging it? (my original sticker is for a C/AGS-AUS AGS-001 model); if not, are there any eBay sellers that make custom stickers for different regions (I haven't really looked into this much, but I'm assuming most GBA SP stickers for sale would be for US model AGS-001 GBA SPs, right?)
Help me!! I have this game boy advanced sp device (limited addition) that I had for 8 years, so it's pretty old. I don't want to waste my money on a new game boy so I decided to just ask for help. My problem is that when I put my charger in, the light flickers for a second then just flickers off and I have to keep moving it to charge but it never works. I don't know if it's just supposed to do that or it's really old and a part of the board is broken but I hope you can at least help me. I'm also too scared to take apart my game boy... If you mentioned this in the video, I'm sorry for wasting your time but I'm just paranoid :(
+Katagii-Chan If the light goes out right after plugging in the charger, then one of the fuses on the board has failed. They're *very* tiny and tricky to replace. An easy solution would be to buy another Game Boy that works properly, but is in bad cosmetic condition, then just swap the boards. Good luck!
Only 2 years too late, but I don't like any of the answers listed here. Any electronic component that is subject to frequent external use (IE people plugging things in and out) tend to fail pretty reliably. What you describe (having to adjust the cord to make contact) really makes me think you've just got a worn charging port. The specific reason for the failure depends, but there are two common scenarios: 1.) the contacts in either the cord or on the device have become bent, worn, or damaged, or 2.) from repeated "pushing" and abuse, the pins have become desoldered or aren't making as good of contact with the board. Before proceeding, you should try another charger AND/or another battery you KNOW works. This will rule those out as part of the problem. If your issue repeats, here's what you could do: 1. Inspect the contacts in the port and on your cord. If there is an obvious problem, ie. they are dirty or corroded - clean with some isopropanol and attempt to fix. 2. If cleaning/messing with the contacts If this does not solve the issue, then disassemble the unit and resolder the port. 3. If neither of those approaches work, buy a trashed unit online for a couple of bucks and salvage the charging port. Desolder/remove the old and install the new. That should work. If not, it's probably something to do with the charging circuit on the board - I'd be looking for a unit with guts you can salvage in that instance.
Can you list the tools you used in the video? I've been looking for a hobby tool set and the one in this video looks good. I'm also curious about the sawdering tool you use in your videos. thanks
When inserting the hinges, I pressed them in and they clicked; however, they protrude about 1mm and the lid doesn't lock into place, when open, like it should. Any advice on how to fix this?
I know this is old, but what screw driver set is that? Do you recommend it or have you moved onto something else? While we are at it, what's a good portable soldering iron for game boy modding?
Hi Colin, I bought a Gameboy Advance SP AGS-101 a few days ago and it works fine, but unfortunately the case is in a pretty bad shape. Hey! So I'm having issues with my SP. it will turn on most of the time. But when I put the charger in the orange light will turn on for about a second, then shut off. It seems to still charge the console because I will come back less than 5 minutes later and it will turn on. But also, sometimes when I click any button (for instance on a start menu) it will just shut down the whole console. I dont know if this is an issue with the board or with the cartridge slot. Any help out there?

This took me 6 hours to do. I'm a complete n00b at this. And even though it's complete, my hinge is very loose. It wasn't loose before and I'm using the same hinges from my old SP. Any way to fix that? Or do I gotta start all over. If I have to start all over like removing the ribbon etc., then forget it. This was way hard for me.

You also need to approximate the detent position when reinserting them.

The ribbon cable is a pain in the ass to put back on with sausage fingers lol. Finally got it after half an hour
totally agree lol. I have fat hamhocks for hands and I had a hard time getting mine together but it's awesome now.
I recommend getting a tweezer set from eBay or Amazon. they're about $15 and can do all the ribbon holding, inserting, part holding, etc.
Both batteries are legit, the grey 3.8V one is a GB SP AGS 101 battery, the blue 3.7V one is a GB SP AGS 001 battery.
Taïoh Igrèque actually it’s the other way around, grey one is for ags-001, the blue battery is for ags-101
vicma praur that's not entirely true.
Saved me on those shoulder bumper springs. I couldn't quite figure out how they were housed. Thanks for this video!
At 19:35 you edit out exactly how you get the hinge and cap on. This is where I'm stuck. Thanks for any input.
A replacement gba sp motherboard cost $15. I'd rather do that then solder off the pins and then resolder the cartridge reader
Hey man, i just replaced a 20$ 101 case for the Zelda one, and your tutorial was on point. Thanks!
That's very honest to show this kind of incident, which can happen even to experienced people
when you deal with cheap plastic parts, so kudos for this!
Just bought a couple of worn out gameboy sp's off eBay and your video might have just inspired me to change the casing. Thanks 🙃
Thanks big time for these videos! You have helped me more times than I can count! This helped me swap 101 guts into my 001 shell. Keep it up!
Been watching your videos for the last few months and really don't know why you don't have more subscribers. Great, informative video and definitely convinced me to give this a go!
Got my 10 buck shell from China this afternoon ...my inherited Gba 101 is now looking brand new plays like
New too! Thanks for the video ! Really helped me do it in less then an hour . I'm new to moding so thought it would take much longer 😎! I'm rather proud of myself.....lol
Great stuff
Thank you!
You made that look easy. I had traumatic regressions when I watched you deal with the hinges.
thank you so much! just follows your video and changed the shell on my own childhood gameboy from scratched up bad looking, to looking brand new!
Taking my first SP apart tonight, and this is the video that will help 😁
Thankyou 😎
Hi Colin, Thanks to your video , i have replaced the shell of my gba for a nes style shell with no issues. Thank you very much.
I swear your videos are the best on RUclips
this is the most awesome video for replacement shell 👍💕well explained and no fast forward
Hey thanks for doing this step by step
Guide. I got a GBA SP and will be swapping out it’s case soon. 👍🏻
Do you think these replacement shells feel flimsy/cheap? Or do they feel like OEM ones?
They are ABSOLUTELY flimsy. Not worth it in my opinion. You can get a MINT condition AGS-001 on Ebay for 20-25 bucks.
Remove that 001 screen sell it back on Ebay for a couple extra bucks. Then buy this screen. Link below. It's an IPS lcd screen with 4x the pixel density than the 101 screen. Plus 5 brightness modes. You'll love it.
Plus you'll have an original shell.

Thank you, sweet jesus thank you i was about to break the hindges and I watched this and *phew* i didnt break them thank you for this video you helped someone reshell a gbasp properly :) you got my sub!
WOW this one was so much helpful!!! I watched another video and he didn't fully sperate the screen housing, and by following his steps which i thought were correct, accidently broke my ribbon cable. This method was so much more safer and easier, and correct.
You think you could do a shell replacement on a first gen DS the first one they came out with?
Informal and entertaining tutorial. Thank you so much, now I have an AGS 101 naruto gameboy advance sp!
Thank you very much for this video , well made. You have the perfect teacher tone to keep up with all the instructions . Thank you again
This video was really helpful after my shell cracked Five gold stars!
Loved the video but I think it would be a better idea to make a separate video on switching housing shells.
Great vid man I'm same way with being nostalgic with the original hardware
The thing is, my current CIB Pearl White GBA SP is actually an AGS-101 in a replica shell like yours. ;)
I had no interest in the Pearl White GBA SP because I already had my launch unit (Cobalt), a Target Black Friday-exclusive DKC bundle (Lime Green), and a Limited Edition (Classic NES).
Nice video just bought a replacement case so waiting for it coming at least I know how to swap it over now just got to watch those springs
Thank you I was just going to replace my scratched up gba Shell with a Pikachu one so this rly helped
great video, just started on my SP and this has been really useful. thanks!
I made a frankengameboy because of this video. I had one with a broken screen and my parents had one with a ruined motherboard and battery. I took them both apart put the good screen with a good base made one working gameboy advanced SP instead of two broken ones.
"made me kinda upset"
I would have raged so bad if that happened to me lol
Storm Trooper SP housing is what I thought. I have recently replaced the battery's in 2 of my SP's with a higher milliamp battery. The old battery's didn't last that long and when I looked around I found higher performance battery's for the SP. The replaced battery's seem to be giving me a good amount more battery life, and also seem to charge faster.
I'm looking to clean up my gameboys too! Would love to know what brand of tool you're using with all those small bits.
They had a white limited edition available in all regions I'm pretty sure. Sorry about that old case, thanks for showing all this though.
hey i think i may have diagnosed my problem and this seems like a good place to leave this: on my gba sp, all gameboy carts seem ever so slightly loose and the slightest bump causes the game to lock up, its 100% fine with advance games with zero problems. also occasionally it boots into "advance mode" even with a original gameboy cart installed in the slot. i got to looking at it and there is a switch inside the cart slot on the sp that is bumped "closed" when a original gameboy cart is installed. because of the placement of the switch and the shape of the original gameboy carts, it closes this switch which tells the gba sp to boot into original gameboy mode. sometimes mine even boots into gba mode even if there is a game boy cart installed. the switch in my sp seems to maybe have a broken hinge point on the switch because as i close it manually with a small pick i can see it cock and turn sideways as it closes completely as if its double hinged but their is no way they would design it that way. that slot switch on the sp, should move exactly like a door to your house, it should swing close on one axis, not start closing on one axis and then kick sidways as mine does where the top corner of the door ends up scraping the ceiling of your house. my guess is that this switch, when open should go into gba mode, when closed it goes into gb mode, when the hinge breaks on the switch i bet it can inadvertently "toggle" back between open and closed which flips the mode back and forth between gba and gb mode which causes the game to crash and occasionally even boot to gba mode when it has a gb game installed. sorry for long post, but i have heard no one else talk about this anywhere, i have made a video a video of the diagnosis, and upload but i suspect the only fix is a new pin header assembly and lots of fun soldering, which i may never do as it plays gba games just fine, buts driving me nuts knowing its malfunctioning
Thankfully a good explanation about the hinges install, thanks for this informative video!
The blue battery is stock and the other one is a replacement that you can buy. It works flawlessly as far as I know but I don’t personally have one. I remember my old sp had a blue battery and I got it at Best Buy when they were brand new
Hi, did you have any problems getting the circuit board to seat back down , mine is springy when I try to close it is a little resistant,
I've recently completed a shell replacement on a couple gameboy advances non sp using kits purchased from ebay.
Very helpful video, the instructions are much appreciated!
8:55 much better showing how to remove display ribbon
20:16 putting back in
Awesome video! Thanks! Love all your stuff. Keep it up.
Nice video but I was hoping to see the hinge install in more derail. Do you have any links or ideas? My after market hinges are difficult
(One of them even came complete with the box & included literature, all in perfect condition.)
So: one unit has a perfect (I mean PRISTINE) outer shell as it was used solely in a case.. but the inner shell is slightly scratched.
Cheers!
Hi man.I switch to the position on an outbreak and all ... what to do, what could be the problem?
YOU are such an awesome human! I wish the planet could breed more of your kind. ♥ from Brazil
Hey man love the vid
Good video.
Thanks
Helped me avoid destroying my hinges :P the only thing, I was too eager to finish and my tri-wing slipped and made a scratch on my screen :S
Do other functions still work? Might be looking at a bad ribbon cable or battery issues.
Maybe when it fell, part of the ribbon cable just got disconnected. That's happened to me before
I messed up the hinges...
I got one today for free, works perfectly fine all that's wrong with it is that it's got a decent amount od scratches
If you mentioned this in the video, I'm sorry for wasting your time but I'm just paranoid :(
Hope you answer as soon as possible...
+Katagii-Chan If the light goes out right after plugging in the charger, then one of the fuses on the board has failed. They're *very* tiny and tricky to replace. An easy solution would be to buy another Game Boy that works properly, but is in bad cosmetic condition, then just swap the boards. Good luck!
+Katagii-Chan Have you tired another battery?
If your issue repeats, here's what you could do:
I'm also curious about the sawdering tool you use in your videos. thanks
I did a video about some useful tools to have for console modding/repairs: ruclips.net/video/49qoxiuY6oY/видео.html
thanks
When inserting the hinges, I pressed them in and they clicked; however, they protrude about 1mm and the lid doesn't lock into place, when open, like it should. Any advice on how to fix this?
Just figured out the answer to my question. Had to open the lid to the normal locked open position and pressed on the hinges till flush.
Just did this today.
Took me about a hour.
I know this is old, but what screw driver set is that? Do you recommend it or have you moved onto something else? While we are at it, what's a good portable soldering iron for game boy modding?
It’s a kit from iFixit, I’ve generally had good luck with their screwdrivers. For portable irons I swear by the Hakko FX-901.
Hi Colin,
I bought a Gameboy Advance SP AGS-101 a few days ago and it works fine, but unfortunately the case is in a pretty bad shape. Do you know any website which is trustworthy where I can buy a new one because I would like to replace it and with your nice tutorial I´m pretty sure it won´t be that hard.
Thanks
Ebay
+HardstyleGamer aliexpress has a plethora of cases, i jsut got mine in i ordered. it took about 3 weeks to come in from china but the purple case is sexy :P
Any help out there?
your video helped me a lot, thanks you!!! I have 1 problem in my gba sp that i couldn't solve, do you know how to fix backlight bleed? My gba has white light getting out from the corners. If i change the angle of vision i can see the corners without that weird light, but it really annoys me. lol

Please I dont know what to do! Can I replace a 101 motherboard with a 001's? Because maybe thats why the system suddenly resets while on, It seems that it has been used too much. But i dont know if I have to buy a regular SP motherboard generic or it has to be specifically an AGS 101. Ive searched but I cant seem to find any. Please I dont know what to do!
Does it matter if the shell is for ags 001 or 101?
I wanna get a backlit screen for my ags 001, but I don't know how to apply the outer protective screen to it. should I just do like you did with your front light mod?
I bought a GBA sp for $7 from a garage sale and it’s super scratched up, should I change the shell but it looks really hard or should I use one of those stick tings
My brother's GBASP is getting an error just after you turn it on, before the game actually boots up.

Hi man, i have this blue battery on my 101 and give me 12 hours playing a kirby game 👍🏼 one it took 2h20m charging 👍🏼
