I couldn't agree more. I work in real estate and I am constantly in all kinds of different houses, and this drove me nuts during the movie. Especially since they showed the front of the house at least 7 times

I loved how in the movie the surgeon has a ‘worlds best brain surgeon’ trophy. Then when it shows her doing surgery she just shoved a bunch of crap into a little girl’s skull with her hand.
Dude, not only her patient survived that but also seemingly didn't developed any pathologies and even had a chance to live a sort of normal life. Who knew it was an xman demon or whatever Gabriel was. So credit goes where it is due

This review is the perfect example of what makes Red Letter Media the greatest movie review channel on RUclips. The way they are able to see the film for what it really is, whereas every other reviewer just takes it completely seriously at face value. As hilarious as Mike and Jay are, they are truly brilliant film critics.
If I'm being honest I was surprised they had such difficulty figuring out if the director was in on the joke or not. I don't see how you watch the first 5 minutes of the film and not know it was going to be intentional schlock

As someone from Seattle, I can say with a fair bit of certainty that there are no spooky medical castles bordered by dense woodland on one side and a sheer drop into Lake Washington on the other. Bet then again, I'm not a doctor.
but there is, kind of... no cliff, but wWhats the cool old building on the hill on the south side of the lake overlooking the arboretum? You can seeit from just about anywhere in the city... Sort of up and across the freeway on the horizon? Shits cool looking and spooky. not THIS spooky, but I assume thats where they got the inspo.
Once the jail scene hit every single person in the theater was either clapping, laughing or cheering. Then we get to the fight sequence in the "police station" and everybody lost it. Popcorn flying and shit, I love this movie, seeing this was easily my favorite theater experience.
When I first saw this movie I was super disappointed because I was half expecting The Conjuring, but now I absolutely love it. We know that James Wan obviously knows how to make a good modern movie, you can tell he made this super campy on purpose.
Malignant is the best time I've had at the movies in a loooong time (mostly thanks to covid), but holy shit what a bat-shit crazy movie! Will definitely be buying on blu-ray
Not me. James Wan basically said, "hey, let's combine wacky martial arts choreography with violent horror", which in that case, I'd have rather watched a horror flick followed by a martial arts flick. He half-assed two things IMO. :-)
As a lover of terrible 90s / naughties horror when the scene was dead, I felt seen. You can never guess intention, but reading the film I think it’s clearly a throwback to the conservative-underbellied, villain-driven, green/gray toned, action / substance heavy, plotless, gory mess that was horror 20 years prior. It’s placed at an interesting time as horror is never been bigger and feels like the genre might be bound for a wave of terrible rehashed schlock. I had fun, and am curious how people will look on this movie a few years out- I don’t think critics are totally clued into how much of the film lives as satire. I think it’s worth seeing if you’re ready for a lot of goofs

This. I think it's 100% intentionally silly and "bad". We can say many things about James Wan, but we must always remember 2 things : 1) the guy knows and loves horror, in every movie he directed there are plenty of homages or easter eggs to other horror movies. 2) the guy isn't stupid. Pretty sure he saw "basket case" and maybe even its sequels. The discrepancies between the exterior and interior of the house, the strangely "fake" sets, the creepy hospital on the edge of a cliff..come on, that's saying " this is a cheesy horror, grab your popcorn and enjoy".
Much of the architecture of the movie looks like the type you would find in the Batman universe. Castle/hospitals on cliffs, big underground tunnels, police stations with massive rooms, etc. Hell even the antagonist is a like a comic villain.
As a person that has fallen through an attic onto the floor below, and only missed it being a multi story fall by like 5-10 feet, I just want to attest to the fact that a person can easily fit between the beams.
That reminds me of the Erfurt Latrine Disaster where in medieval times a whole Hoftag fell from the second floor through the ground floor into the cesspit and around 60 people drowned in feces.

At the end of the movie it seems like the actress is holding back laughter during her "the power was in me the whole time" and "my sister was family all along" lines.
That scene where he throws the chair from the other side of that huge office and knocks two people unconscious at the same time was straightout surreal to see in the theater. I couldn't even react to it.
Couldn't help noticing jack-o-lantern cups and about a gallon of vodka behind Jay, there, so I guess can expect the standard Halloween episode this year.
That fight scene in the police precinct was hilarious indeed. I love that Gabriel couldn't beat the one cop but could just man handle a entire precinct... The chair thrown at those 2 cops at the end was icying on the cake.
Seattleite here, we actually do have a creepy hospital that sits on top of a hill. It’s called Beacon Hill Pacific Medical Center and it does kinda look like that. My friends and I call it Arkham Asylum.
So I saw this movie in a crowded theater and I can attest that it was the best theater going experience in a long time. Straight laughing for the entire third act, my sides were hurting. Loved it
James Wan is tired of making horror movies. The studio told him "we'll pay for whatever movie you make but it has to be a horror movie" so he made Malignant instead
29:18 Please, someone, one day, compile every single one of Mike's pitches for schlocky scenes. They're some of my favourite moments from all of RLM. I remember one in the Spotlight review where Mark Ruffalo is in a car chase with a Catholic priest, and one from a video I can't remember about someone sliding through a spiral train crash.
He acquired his electric powers like in the classic feature Ernest Goes to Jail. In desperate battle with him, the doctors resort to attacking him with the defibrillator and accidentally power him up.
The reason the Seattle underground isn't used more in stuff is it doesn't really exist anymore. the only parts left are a couple of segments exclusively locked off for the tours through the place. I mean there are a few stores that have lower floors and dank leaky backrooms(I worked in one.) but none of that is interconnected.
I still the most unintentionally hilarious thing in this movie to be someone driving a Toyota Prius. I don't know what it is, I get that its supposed to be good for the environment (it isn't), but its now a cliché on a character template. Its turned into the Soccer Mom car. Earlier that used to be family vans. (A movie starring a family of three, and for some reason they own a seven-seater van and the dad has an old/new sports car that won't start/work well). Now that role is taken over by a Prius.
Same here. And I agree with Mike that a director can get away with showing the house exterior once, in an establishing shot. But when the director keeps cutting back to that shot over and over, he's either up to something (trying to be funny) or he got bonked on the head and doesn't understand WHY it's funny.
"Tonally it's like Sam Raimi, meets Dario Argento, meets Frank Henenlotter, meets TROMA. With the slickness of a James Wan studio movie." The fact this sentence was said without experiencing a stroke is a feat to behold. The fact this sentence is also entirely correct: Means the universe will collapse in on itself soon or something holy crap.
I feel like this warrants an ever spiralling set of sequels until we have the Wan-core version of a "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" Cinematic Universe.
That ending gave me a feeling of an intention to create a new slasher killer hero - with distinct image and weapon and stuff - to start a series of dumb sequels for other directors to make. Can't wait for Malignant 7 in space!
Died laughing in the movie when it seems the massive police station warehouse room actually has the FRONT DOOR to the police station. No front desk, no waiting area, just bam all your detectives

If he was sane while making this, he should've known that this isn't winning any critical praise. The lead and all the other actors wanted to make something wacky and over the top as hell. Plus, I think he won't make anything like this ever again and it is MILES better than that demonic movie by blokamp.

I loved the fact that there was a giant extractor fan in the attic that was a) nowhere to be seen from the house exterior and b) you would never actually see on a standard suburban townhouse
I wanted to say Jay but Mike really did blown him out of the water. Although both of them ultimately lose the competition, I wanted them to read their intros at the same time.
Based on that setup of an ending, I've already put together the plot for the entire sequel. Here we go: The murders start again, but there's no sign of Gabriel. They all get together to track down the killer and watch over our main character in case she's slipping up again; but they can't pin it down on anyone else so they have to arrest her without evidence of her innocence. Of course in the middle of the movie, when she's lost all hope and thinks she's crazy, she gets attacked by a second woman. Only her sister believes her, and they go together to Seattle underground to track the murderer down. Turns out Gabriel is back, but he's convinced a psych patient to kill through the radio and frame our MC. But through the power of schlock, the woman found Gabriel's remains from the first surgery (or... used some from the murders), and sews together a new body for him on herself. She reveals that she will kill the protagonist to take Gabriel's brain out and connect it to hers. She fights them and manages to start the process of separating Gabriel. The cop comes in and frees the sister. Then they defeat the crazy woman, and destroy the separated Gabriel once and for all. The End. Leaving this comment here as proof that I called the entire plot of the sequel back in 2021.
For what it's worth, my read on the movie was that Wan was very aware of what he was doing and was in on the joke/fun. Whatever the case, great job all around! I wish I had seen this in a theater with a live audience.

The fact that the cinematography is so smooth and well tracked during the split seconds I got to see throughout this video of the fight scenes just adds to the comedy for me. just out of nowhere, seeing a fucking john wick battle with a backwards horror monster person as the protagonist played _completely straight_ is apex shlock and if I had HBO max the first thing I would have done after finishing this video even having the whole thing spoiled for me is to go watch it immediately because high effort shitposting like that is my favorite kind of content.
I have not been this entertained by a horror movie, since nightmare on elm street 3D, that was supposed to be silly though and i was teenager on LSD, good job Mr Wan.

This review is the perfect example of what makes Red Letter Media the greatest movie review channel on RUclips. The way they are able to see the film for what it really is, whereas every other reviewer just takes it completely seriously at face value. As hilarious as Mike and Jay are, they are truly brilliant film critics.
If I'm being honest I was surprised they had such difficulty figuring out if the director was in on the joke or not. I don't see how you watch the first 5 minutes of the film and not know it was going to be intentional schlock

Once the jail scene hit every single person in the theater was either clapping, laughing or cheering. Then we get to the fight sequence in the "police station" and everybody lost it. Popcorn flying and shit, I love this movie, seeing this was easily my favorite theater experience.
I feel that right there. Is exactly the feeling the movie wanted to give to people.
Maybe james wan wanted to make some kind of an ultimate crowd-pleasing experiemce

When I first saw this movie I was super disappointed because I was half expecting The Conjuring, but now I absolutely love it. We know that James Wan obviously knows how to make a good modern movie, you can tell he made this super campy on purpose.
Malignant is the best time I've had at the movies in a loooong time (mostly thanks to covid), but holy shit what a bat-shit crazy movie! Will definitely be buying on blu-ray

Not me. James Wan basically said, "hey, let's combine wacky martial arts choreography with violent horror", which in that case, I'd have rather watched a horror flick followed by a martial arts flick. He half-assed two things IMO. :-)

I love this movie. Everyone walking out of the theater seemed to love it. Fun, camp, and crazy. An absolute blast.

As a lover of terrible 90s / naughties horror when the scene was dead, I felt seen. You can never guess intention, but reading the film I think it’s clearly a throwback to the conservative-underbellied, villain-driven, green/gray toned, action / substance heavy, plotless, gory mess that was horror 20 years prior. It’s placed at an interesting time as horror is never been bigger and feels like the genre might be bound for a wave of terrible rehashed schlock. I had fun, and am curious how people will look on this movie a few years out- I don’t think critics are totally clued into how much of the film lives as satire. I think it’s worth seeing if you’re ready for a lot of goofs

This. I think it's 100% intentionally silly and "bad". We can say many things about James Wan, but we must always remember 2 things : 1) the guy knows and loves horror, in every movie he directed there are plenty of homages or easter eggs to other horror movies. 2) the guy isn't stupid. Pretty sure he saw "basket case" and maybe even its sequels. The discrepancies between the exterior and interior of the house, the strangely "fake" sets, the creepy hospital on the edge of a cliff..come on, that's saying " this is a cheesy horror, grab your popcorn and enjoy".
This was honestly the happiest I've seen Mike and Jay in at least a year. And very glad to see it.

Much of the architecture of the movie looks like the type you would find in the Batman universe. Castle/hospitals on cliffs, big underground tunnels, police stations with massive rooms, etc. Hell even the antagonist is a like a comic villain.

At the end of the movie it seems like the actress is holding back laughter during her "the power was in me the whole time" and "my sister was family all along" lines.

29:18 Please, someone, one day, compile every single one of Mike's pitches for schlocky scenes. They're some of my favourite moments from all of RLM. I remember one in the Spotlight review where Mark Ruffalo is in a car chase with a Catholic priest, and one from a video I can't remember about someone sliding through a spiral train crash.
Mike's alternate ending for Hereditary was the best.
Don't forget Mike's bit in Captain Marvel about the bad guy's plane crashing into a manure truck during an air race.

The reason the Seattle underground isn't used more in stuff is it doesn't really exist anymore. the only parts left are a couple of segments exclusively locked off for the tours through the place. I mean there are a few stores that have lower floors and dank leaky backrooms(I worked in one.) but none of that is interconnected.

But when the director keeps cutting back to that shot over and over, he's either up to something (trying to be funny) or he got bonked on the head and doesn't understand WHY it's funny.

Based on that setup of an ending, I've already put together the plot for the entire sequel. Here we go:
The murders start again, but there's no sign of Gabriel. They all get together to track down the killer and watch over our main character in case she's slipping up again; but they can't pin it down on anyone else so they have to arrest her without evidence of her innocence. Of course in the middle of the movie, when she's lost all hope and thinks she's crazy, she gets attacked by a second woman. Only her sister believes her, and they go together to Seattle underground to track the murderer down. Turns out Gabriel is back, but he's convinced a psych patient to kill through the radio and frame our MC. But through the power of schlock, the woman found Gabriel's remains from the first surgery (or... used some from the murders), and sews together a new body for him on herself. She reveals that she will kill the protagonist to take Gabriel's brain out and connect it to hers. She fights them and manages to start the process of separating Gabriel. The cop comes in and frees the sister. Then they defeat the crazy woman, and destroy the separated Gabriel once and for all. The End. Leaving this comment here as proof that I called the entire plot of the sequel back in 2021.

The fact that the cinematography is so smooth and well tracked during the split seconds I got to see throughout this video of the fight scenes just adds to the comedy for me. just out of nowhere, seeing a fucking john wick battle with a backwards horror monster person as the protagonist played _completely straight_ is apex shlock and if I had HBO max the first thing I would have done after finishing this video even having the whole thing spoiled for me is to go watch it immediately because high effort shitposting like that is my favorite kind of content.
We went to the drive-in to see it. And when we got home we did exactly that.
I have not been this entertained by a horror movie, since nightmare on elm street 3D, that was supposed to be silly though and i was teenager on LSD, good job Mr Wan.
