This was huge fun to play, and nice having a rhythm guitar part to play off, of the sort that Howe or Holdsworth were never going to provide. Personally I think this is a little too fast, for which I blame myself entirely. The album version is around 103 beats per minute, this is more like 108 b.p.m. Contemporary drummers on rock tours usually have some kind of a ‘clock’ (metronome) by their sides, so they can count the song in at least in an agreed tempo. They then may well be entirely governed by an automated track that they play along with through the entire song. In my era, we just played it at the tempo the drummer - primarily - thought appropriate.
But there could be difficulties with the perception of tempo, depending upon what stimulants had been consumed by the participants. If everyone is in the same cloud of joint smoke, that’s sort of OK; it just means it’s going to take a while to get through the song. If everyone is on cocaine, that too is arguably OK - you’re going to get through it very fast. Trouble starts when the guitarist is grassed out, the bass player coked out, and the drummer entirely neutral. Then the drummer gets shot at from all sides.
I hadn’t seen a gold record in a while so the success of the ABWH album came as a pleasant surprise. Interestingly, I have never received such a thing for my efforts with King Crimson. ‘Larks’ Tongues in Aspic’, ‘Red’, or ‘Discipline’ would certainly have racked up sufficient sales by now, but I believe the sales have to be with a single company. Yes had Atlantic Records, and in this case ABWH was on Arista.
‘Brother of Mine’ was released as an edited single and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Its music video was directed by Storm Thorgerson. Clive Davis, head of Arista, produced the edit. There was a fair bit of groaning as Clive master-minded what many thought was a massive missed opportunity. Everyone at radio just wanted an obvious single from this song, and Clive managed to omit the hook. The upside was we would probably have turned into Asia, which is something of a relief.

I still like a lot the ABWH album, which I bought in the LP format in late 1989, in the cassette format in 1991, and in the CD format in 2002. I also like this live version of "Brother of Mine" a lot. I listened to this live version for the first time in october 1990 during a FM radio broadcast of parts of the Shoreline Amphitheatre concert. I recorded the broadcast of 60 minutes in a cassette. In 1997, I bought the live 2 CD set called "An Evening of Yes Music Plus". ABWH was a very good band.

"You can see what you want to see..." ABWH has always held a special place in my heart. It was one of the first Yes albums I got into in the early 90s along with Union, Fragile, 90125, and The Yes Album. To me, it's one of the more unique Yes albums b/c Anderson's lyrics on songs like "Themes," "Order of the Universe" and "Brother of Mine" really seem to be a defense/explanation of Yes music that wasn't really fully explored on prior Yes albums, and never touched upon all that much on later ones. "Themes" rebels against the financial pressures put on Yes by others, "Order of the Universe" talks about the artistic pressure put upon the band and how that can thwart growth, and then while "Brother of Mine" certainly talks about connectivity with all mankind, I think it also speaks to the members of Yes when they first started out and how ambitious they were with their dreams. It can be read as a celebration of Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe getting back together (long lost brothers), it can also be read as an appeal to Squire (another "brother"...nothing can come between us). But what dawned on me just recently--even after listening to this great song hundreds of times in the past 30+ years-- the final lines of "you can see what you want to see" kind of nicely sums up Yes. To really get the spirit of what they're all about, you have to be open to the adventure you're about to go on. And considering the amount of criticism the band received over the years for that very ambition they put out there, it's a nice kind of brush off to that criticism ("whatever...you can see what you want to see...."). Anyway, I know as Bruford pointed out, this spirit lasted for about 10 minutes before Union came about, but it's arguably the most interesting album from Anderson in terms of an honest insight into his creative headspace.

I always liked this song. tempo seems fine to me. live is often a bit quicker thanks to adrenaline. when i hear bands live at studio bpm often feels slow. great post bill thank you. and the electronics really worked. I think even today a 'real ' snare and bronze metals is still the way to go though.

I actually bought the vinyl back then! Still having it - but my player gave up. I was happy to get a little "YES" feeling at the time. The 80ies had a lot of terrible music (for my taste). Of all the rock and prog-rock quitarists I guess Steve Howe was the greatest inspiration to me. I am surprised you say its hard to play along. I always thought he was the master of precision.

I quite like this song but dear god did the '80s stylings clash with the classic Yes formula--Bill Bruford's dumb space drums, Rick Wakeman's shrill digital keyboards, the only person here who has the right sound for his role is Jon Anderson (he absolutely kills it, flawless performance) and that's only because he doesn't have an instrument so he can't bring the wrong one. Someone get a Moog and some real drums in here! If nothing else the wrong instruments were played very well, but I'd love to hear this sounding more like Close to the Edge or Tales from Topographic Oceans did. The late '80s were just full of the absolute worst productions for anyone who didn't play hip-hop or metal...
