    As an industrial designer, I'm pretty impressed with the design team at Lucid. They've stripped away the visual bulk since the concept teaser images were revealed. Most impressive is the approach to usability & aerodynamics. I really hope Lucid can survive. This vehicle will make or break the company.
    Great interviews & video, btw Tom.

    The SUV can only be born of a mind preoccupied with utility rather than style for style's sake. Aesthetic is just attractive packaging of a useful product worth the customer's money. It is silly for a car maker to tell the customer that the car is nice looking, but only small kids can fit on the third row. Lucid nailed it! Thank you for the review!

    • @krane15
      @krane15 9 месяцев назад +3

      That's true with every SUV except full-size vehicles. And even they struggle to fit 3 adults comfortably. At the moment, the most spacious 3-row seat is the Grand Wagoneer with GM product coming in a close second.

    Gravity looks awesome. Hope it has NACS. Personally can't afford it but I hope they have a huge hit. Maybe they can reduce the battery by 30KW to it a 300mile range and give it a better price point?

    • @jackylsmith8138
      @jackylsmith8138 9 месяцев назад +5

      J3400. NACS is just a name Tesla assigned well after a decade of it being a Tesla charger. J3400 is the official charger name. Unless your at a version 4 Tesla supercharger version 3 and under do not charge Lucinda fast. Better off at a 350kw EA charger.

      @@Resist4I would assert at least 300 miles of range, because at a certain point having chargers every 50 miles or so means you can easily still go on a trip

    • @Resist4
      @Resist4 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@ericnewton5720 Again, battery degradation will reduce that 300 miles as the car ages and if you don't practice good charging habits. Add in hilly terrain, extreme temperatures, windy days and faster driving and your range will drop even lower faster. A 400 mile range gives you a buffer for all that. And yes, you can charge more often on a trip, if you have the extra time. But that also means you will be paying varying charging fees, which are way more expensive than home charging. 400 miles of range is the perfect minimum and would really get ICE owners attention to go with an EV.

      It is stupid. Sliders are great, especially when you have a 3rd row and when you are in tight spaces but you can't have them because then it is a minivan and that is only for soccer moms so you are not a real man if you drive something a domesticated woman would (which is funny as soccer moms drive suv's now for somehow the same reason).

      Not sure it makes Tesla's old or cheap, Tesla's have gone more minimalistic within all their models. At first that was kind of cool but honestly I'd rather have more buttons/controls. Lucid is a more luxury brand while Tesla was luxury only based on how expensive they were, but prices keep coming down so now they are just kind plain but useful for most people.

      To me, it's just a perfectly normal estate car with the advantages of being an EV which opens up more cabin space which will be how they were able to fold the back seats down completely flat in both rows. I've a feeling that wasn't done regularly or even at all before EVs but I may just have missed it. Much more practical than a pickup though, at least, if they ever make a profit making their cars.

    • @jonevansauthor

      That seemed the case to me too but it had a gap under it which confused me. I think there's this thing where car design monkeys think you have to be able to see the whole screen so they mess around with the steering wheel, and the position of their UI, make it unworkable and then they cut large chunks off the square panel of the screen anyway. I do wonder if it's as bad as it looks, particularly if the driver is short.

    Lucid is clearly targeting the high end with all the advanced “experience” features. When lucid realizes the bulk of public with more discretionary budget are around the 50-80k range. Anything higher than that figure and you’re in rarified territory and those sales numbers are much lower.
    The engineering and range are being hampered by the expense of a lot of things that don’t contribute much to the driving of it.
    It certainly looks great and the range sounds phenomenal but price over 110k just puts it in a totally different rarified realm of buyers. It’ll be interesting to see how Porsche Macan EV will stack up since it’s basically smaller suv with almost as much range.

    I truly love that companies are making screens and then slicing large chunks off the corners and stuff, throwing them away, like they're making pastry pies. Except you can't just recycle those bits, and all it does for me is reduce the screen space I have access to as a paying customer. They're doing it with phones and tablets too. Rounded corners! How helpful for my rectangular content... in this case they've put a massive bezel on the screen and had it float high, so it seems from the back seat camera view, that it obstructs the windscreen and therefore visibility. Presumably, it doesn't for Tom but how is it for a shorter driver?

    Lots of great engineering work, particularly the aerodynamics. It makes the car a blend of the best parts of a Tesla and a MB. Form following function.
    But rather than all that video nonsense, PLEASE make more of the everyday functions of driving the vehicle voice controlled. Like “Gravity, close the garage door”, “Gravity, turn on my heated seat, level 2” and “Gravity, Sport mode!” Those functions may be able to be user programmed, but the should be native functions. The car will still have that futuristic whiz bang technology, but will be much safer and more desirable to drive.

    Sorry, but without an injection of cash, I don’t think Lucid can afford to properly launch Gravity without bankruptcy looming.
    I hope I’m wrong, but their losses are piling up and Rawlinson is the only winner.

      They have well over 4.25 billion cash on hand and are secure at least through 2024 until Gravity launches.

      You should consider that even legacy giants have failed or be near failure so that's part of the danger in any startup business. I really think Lucid will survive if not under its original ownership, then through acquisition by another group or manufactures. After all, the future is EV, and its already come to far to let it just die.

      I came here just to say this. The bitrate and dynamic range are remarkably poor to the point where it actually impacts the content - for instance the UI is just blurry and blown out. Just pointing an iPhone and uploading unedited video should be far better than this. Love the content, love Tom, would love an upgrade to the phone used and/or a reconsideration to how the video is being transcoded/exported.

    First, Lucid needs to get a logo. The front should be non-complex, simple and easily recognized. Second, does the rear window go all the way down? It goes to attention to design.
    Finally, Lucid does a far, far, better job at maintaining all the normal look and feel of a traditional automobile. No minimalist shenanigans here. And unlike Teslas, you don't need to take driver operating course or to "get use" to driving all over again. For the most part, the controls are intuitive. Although they still couldn't resist the temptation to reinvent the [steering] wheel.
    @4:03 P.S. who is that guy in the car? He's distracting.

    It is a minivan pretending to be a station wagon and marketed as an SUV.
    I love it, can't afford or justify it. It would be nice if it had 8 seat belts. Even the 3rd role would be more of a 2 passenger with 3 pple capacity.

    Hopefully they fix the mistakes when launching Lucid Air such as missing easy exit & entry, softening entertainment when GPS gives turning instructions, weak push to open switch at charge door, and inability to use voice commands without an Alexa account. Otherwise, this large EV looks great.

    Does it really matter how good or bad the car is if the company is on the verge of bankruptcy? If the company goes under, you can’t get service or parts or warranty. Maybe someone can buy Lucid out. They are currently losing hundreds of thousands of dollars per vehicle and it’s not getting better. 😬 Good luck, lucid.

    What research if any did you do? Do you understand regional advertising? Are you seriously comparing cruise control to active driver assistance? Wow… talk about a knee jerk reaction video. Listen, Ive made bad videos but at least I tried to make it good. I sat in a Rivian R1T, a Model X, and lastly the Lucid Air. In that exact order at an outdoor mall. I also own a Model Y.
    Rivian R1T: Most polished fit and finish inside and out
    Model X: Most tech-oriented and user friendly
    Lucid Air: Best paint job (red metallic) and worst quality interior. Cheap button feel, felt like cheaper plastic everywhere, inexpensive feeling material on the dash. The seats were fine.

      We own a 2021 Model S Plaid (replaced our 2015 Model S P90D) and a 2022 Lucid Air Dream Performance. The Air interior absolutely trounces the Model S interior in terms of material quality, fit and finish, and roominess. That "inexpensive feeling material on the dash" of the Air consists of real open-pore wood, Alcantara, and an alpaca wool blend. By contrast, the yoke of our Model S has lost a dime-sized piece of its synthetic covering, and two more pieces are beginning to peel away. ( We have a request in for a replacement but have been told one is "not currently available".). We also have misaligned trim pieces in the Tesla cabin but none in the Air.
      Also, with the driver seat of both the Model S and the Air set to my preferred driving position, there is 9.5" more of fore/aft rear legroom in the Air than in the Tesla. Once we got the Air, we quit using the Tesla for transporting more than two people. It was just the kinder thing to do.
      With over 20,000 miles on our Air, the body remains quiet and rock solid. By 10,000 miles the Tesla was developing squeaks and groans in its rear quarters.
      The Air also rides and handles better than the Tesla and has a quieter interior, although the Tesla has active noise cancellation. (That was enabled via a software update a couple of months after we took delivery, but we discerned no difference in cabin noise levels.)
      This Plaid will be our last Tesla. As soon as orders open up, we'll be placing one for a Lucid Gravity to replace our 2018 Honda Odyssey minivan. We've been waiting for a roomy 6-7-adult EV hauler to complete our transition to an all-EV household, and the Lucid is the one that will best fit the bill. (We've test driven a Model X twice, but I just can't get my head around a passenger hauler that doesn't even have storage pockets or a center armrest in the second row. If you get the 7-passenger version, you can buy a tacky strap-on armrest from EVannex or another after-market supplier, but with the 6-passenger version you can't even do that. Your inboard arm either rests in your lap or hangs into an abyss. Why Tesla finally added a rear center armrest to the Model S during its 2021 refresh but didn't do the same with the Model X is an enduring mystery.)

    Gonna try to keep an open mind about Lucid, but this is difficult after their *_obvious, criminal IPO shenanigans_* for which the CEO should have been prosecuted by the SEC.

      But Musk's SEC troubles are just water off a duck's back, huh? He was put under a consent settlement and required to step down as chairman, you know, for market manipulation relating to the failed deal in which he tried to get the Saudis to finance his taking Tesla private. (The Saudis instead funded the building of the factory that got Lucid off the ground, which is one of the reasons Musk and his acolytes keep attacking Lucid any way they can.)
