  • FINZI “It Was a Lover and His Lass,” from Let Us Garlands Bring
    Andrew Moore, bass-baritone
    Susan Nowicki, piano
    Performed on Wednesday, October 23, 2019
    Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia
    Join us next week as the Curtis Opera Theatre performs The Barber of Seville, Rossini’s effervescent comedy, overflowing with farcical twists and sparkling arias. The barber of Seville does it all-whether a shave, a scheme, or a secret wedding. Figaro dreams up daring plans to unite the beautiful Rosina with a nobleman in disguise. Their budding romance infuriates the couple’s adversaries, who are no match for the ever-resourceful barber.
    Some of Curtis’s newest additions to the voice department will be highlighted in this production. In anticipation of this opera, please enjoy this performance from the October recital where the new voice students were introduced.

    Beautiful lyrical voice!! I can really see him singing a lot of Mozart and French operas and giving Lied concerts

    Excellent job. I'm working on this for an exercise, and like what I heard here.

    It was a lover and his lass,
    With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
    That o’er the green cornfield did pass,
    In springtime, the only pretty ring time,
    When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding;
    Sweet lovers love the spring.
    Between the acres of the rye,
    With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
    Those pretty country folks would lie,
    In springtime, the only pretty ring time,
    When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding;
    Sweet lovers love the spring.
    This carol they began that hour,
    With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
    How that a life was but a flower
    In springtime, the only pretty ring time,
    When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding;
    Sweet lovers love the spring.
    And therefore take the present time,
    With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
    For love is crownèd with the prime
    In springtime, the only pretty ring time,
    When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding;
    Sweet lovers love the spring.

    The original by Thomas Morley is far more fitting. The only good thing to come from Finzi was ‘My Spirit sang all day’
