Well, since a lot of the story did still make it from the beta, I will take the story from the beta. Apparantly, the combine sent theses aliens to an isolated part of the world. I forgot where but that is what I remember.

It is a pitty that the chapter right after nova prospect was cut. HL2 could have used more of the mega-structure/industrial theme imo. The looks and the atmosphere are so cool

This is all quite interesting but the lack of dialog, proper triggers, some enemy AI, substandard maps and actual transitions in some areas make it hard to really appreciate what they were going for here. I would have loved to see this whole build in a complete state.

1:59:17 - One of the scariest, most standout moments in the original was with this creature...it looks awesome remodeled and hanging here. Shame this guy and the Borealis ship didn't make it into the final build, they could've had another great underwater section with the two.
That creature is actually in the final, for like a second. When the teleporter starts malfunctioning and you get sent to a bunch of different areas, you get put in the middle of the ocean with an 'ichthyosaur' swimming straight at you
I'm almost upset with Valve on this one. They had a game that seems so perfect, an environment that REALLY drives home the idea that shit hit the fan after HL1. I think if they had released a finished version of this, it would have been an even better game. I mean even the placement of the NPC that says "Don't drink the water, they put something in it to make you forget" just makes so much more sense, it looks, sounds, and feels better where it is here. I mean when you see the man in the train station now, it just makes you think how much better the game could have been. Valve was spooked by the leak, and I think they shouldn't have been, and what stuff they ditched really should have remained. Now when I look at Half Life 2, I just see a masterpiece, but a masterpiece that has been thrown together from scraps of something great and abandoned over a decade ago. I would pay good AAA money, upwards of 60 dollars, to play a HL2 - Deleted Scenes game from Valve, and I know it would sell like fucking hot cakes. I have played HL2 to it's breaking point, and to have the same game, same base story, but in the different, and honestly the light the devs wanted. Valve made a stroke of Machiavellian art, and they abandoned it. A story that was radical, but amazing to the same level, it would have been the game of the century, instead of it's admitted greatness. You could have done so much better Valve, I don't care what happened, fix it. Make Deleted Scenes....

HL1 and two are so different, they should just create another half life 1 that accutally fits the setting and atmosphere of half life 2. And also create a new half life 2 that fits the setting of HL1 and just continue both timelines/versions. Yes, I read the wiki, and I said I know combine is the empire, but in an empire you can call all forms of it by its name, they're still part of the combine, thus they are combine, and again, they call them the combine IN THE GAME.
I just can't wrap my mind around the idea that they had an MP7 that looked far more like an MP7 in the early beta builds than the SMG1. The final model doesn't even look like a functional firearm.
I only think the melee weapons were too generic, really. It seems like the early game weapons were meant to be phased out of usage (the smg, the pistol, flamethrower) for stronger options like the AK, revolver, etc., moving up to items like the sniper, crossbow, and combine rifle.
I love it how Half Life 2 is surrounded by all kind of mystery and speculation, supported by all the leaks, hidden files, text lines and deleted content. You can never find everything! This beta is like the same game, but from alternate reality :-)

This area is visible on the security monitors in Kleiner's lab in the final game. There is a camera pointed at the door, and one at the GMan who is on the other side of the fence on the left. Hadn't been able to find the area in the final game, so who knew it would be here...
I really wish they'd actually release the HL2 beta, even though it's not finished I absolutely love it (almost as much as the HL2 we got), the character designs, atmosphere, sound effects and almost everything about is just _yES_

Personally I like the beta stuff much more. It had a lot more details in the world where you started with the lines and machinery everywhere plus more influence and interactive stuff from the police like him opening the doors. The part with the kids would've been a bold but great unique addition that would make sense. The worst part is all of the cut npcs. The original had some scary and awesome cut enemies but HL2 beta made me dislike the real version like comparing Duke Nukem 3D to Forever. They had the one with the burner, larger monsters, disgusting cyborgs with a unique dark brown theme on the machinery and so much more enemies. Now when you look at the rooster you have 5 different kinds of soldiers, 3 zombies and 2 bugs but no real cyborg npcs. Instead of that big hulking beta monster with it's head out and two machine eyes and the crab, we got now 3 combine soldiers with a different coat of paint that's barely distinguishable besides the white one. And we even had the cliche female assassin version like in any old 3d fps that wasn't realistic.
In this version the combine is defeated through sheer boredom, the resistance did nothing and no one went outside so most of them started teleporting back on realising there is absolutely nothing to do on earth. That door texture though, KNOB
I absolutely LOVED the rainy version of City 17, it's so melancholic and kind of has a steampunk feel to it. I'm pretty sure Valve had some very good reasons to not follow that direction with the final game, but it would've been awesome if they used that concept for a setting in another game, maybe for a different Combine controlled city in the Half-Life continuity, that serves as the setting for a sidestory game. Just sayin'.

That creature is actually in the final, for like a second. When the teleporter starts malfunctioning and you get sent to a bunch of different areas, you get put in the middle of the ocean with an 'ichthyosaur' swimming straight at you

I'm almost upset with Valve on this one. They had a game that seems so perfect, an environment that REALLY drives home the idea that shit hit the fan after HL1. I think if they had released a finished version of this, it would have been an even better game.
I mean even the placement of the NPC that says "Don't drink the water, they put something in it to make you forget" just makes so much more sense, it looks, sounds, and feels better where it is here. I mean when you see the man in the train station now, it just makes you think how much better the game could have been.
Valve was spooked by the leak, and I think they shouldn't have been, and what stuff they ditched really should have remained. Now when I look at Half Life 2, I just see a masterpiece, but a masterpiece that has been thrown together from scraps of something great and abandoned over a decade ago. I would pay good AAA money, upwards of 60 dollars, to play a HL2 - Deleted Scenes game from Valve, and I know it would sell like fucking hot cakes.
I have played HL2 to it's breaking point, and to have the same game, same base story, but in the different, and honestly the light the devs wanted. Valve made a stroke of Machiavellian art, and they abandoned it. A story that was radical, but amazing to the same level, it would have been the game of the century, instead of it's admitted greatness.
You could have done so much better Valve, I don't care what happened, fix it. Make Deleted Scenes....

There's this notion that Axel Gembe's hacking changed the story. It didn't. What he leaked revealed that Valve changed the story BEFORE he hacked them.
HL1 and two are so different, they should just create another half life 1 that accutally fits the setting and atmosphere of half life 2. And also create a new half life 2 that fits the setting of HL1 and just continue both timelines/versions. One a darker half life with a darker gordon freeman, and the other a more hope filled light half life with jesus christ i mean gordon freeman like they have been doing. And then they should have like a thing where a portal malfunctions and the two gordons see eachother for a second :)

It's so weird how many guns this game used to have, although it makes sense that some were removed (most of them were too generic and similar)
I just can't wrap my mind around the idea that they had an MP7 that looked far more like an MP7 in the early beta builds than the SMG1. The final model doesn't even look like a functional firearm.
I only think the melee weapons were too generic, really. It seems like the early game weapons were meant to be phased out of usage (the smg, the pistol, flamethrower) for stronger options like the AK, revolver, etc., moving up to items like the sniper, crossbow, and combine rifle.

It's because they had to rush it. HL2 was originally supposed to take place in over 4 days, but they had to remove 1 day because of time restraints.

This area is visible on the security monitors in Kleiner's lab in the final game. There is a camera pointed at the door, and one at the GMan who is on the other side of the fence on the left. Hadn't been able to find the area in the final game, so who knew it would be here...
I really wish they'd actually release the HL2 beta, even though it's not finished I absolutely love it (almost as much as the HL2 we got), the character designs, atmosphere, sound effects and almost everything about is just _yES_

Personally I like the beta stuff much more.
It had a lot more details in the world where you started with the lines and machinery everywhere plus more influence and interactive stuff from the police like him opening the doors.
The part with the kids would've been a bold but great unique addition that would make sense.
The worst part is all of the cut npcs. The original had some scary and awesome cut enemies but HL2 beta made me dislike the real version like comparing Duke Nukem 3D to Forever.
They had the one with the burner, larger monsters, disgusting cyborgs with a unique dark brown theme on the machinery and so much more enemies.
Now when you look at the rooster you have 5 different kinds of soldiers, 3 zombies and 2 bugs but no real cyborg npcs.
Instead of that big hulking beta monster with it's head out and two machine eyes and the crab, we got now 3 combine soldiers with a different coat of paint that's barely distinguishable besides the white one. And we even had the cliche female assassin version like in any old 3d fps that wasn't realistic.

In this version the combine is defeated through sheer boredom, the resistance did nothing and no one went outside so most of them started teleporting back on realising there is absolutely nothing to do on earth.

I absolutely LOVED the rainy version of City 17, it's so melancholic and kind of has a steampunk feel to it. I'm pretty sure Valve had some very good reasons to not follow that direction with the final game, but it would've been awesome if they used that concept for a setting in another game, maybe for a different Combine controlled city in the Half-Life continuity, that serves as the setting for a sidestory game. Just sayin'.
