How Eating Sushi Killed 2 People, And It Wasn't The Fish

- You decide to take your wife out on an impromptu lunch date. The two of you settle on sushi and head over to the restaurant that’s been the local go-to for over 20 years.
Dave’s Sushi.
Little did you know that today was the one day you should have gone literally anywhere else.
Once you’ve left Dave’s after having a lovely meal, your wife says she’s feeling unwell.
Must have just been something she ate that’s not agreeing with her.
But as time ticks on, she doesn’t show any signs of feeling better.
In fact, she’s only getting worse.
And it’s to the point now where it’d probably be a good idea to go to the ER to be safe.

The restaurant made it through 2 death lawsuits and not shut down? Wow
They said sorry though
Your Honor, my client has declared oopsie-daisie on the victims' family
something fishing for not shut down....
Good insurance policy
well at least it wasn't fugu.
this happened in my home town and we used to go here consistently before this happened. It’s tragic and absolutely criminal that they haven’t been shut down, after the incident they continued to fail MULTIPLE health inspections. Locals dont go there anymore, and for good reason
added side note- Daves didn’t even purchase the morels from North America, they were shipped from china 😀
hopefully they close as a result of not getting much business
@@moomshr00m49no wonder, they should make it illegal to have poisonous mushrooms shipped from overseas without proper inspection
Wow wwit did they shut down
What sushi includes morels…?
The red flag was that it's called Dave's Sushi xD
😂😂😂😂
IN MONTANA NON THE LESS
Wait, isn’t there a game on the Switch called that? 🤔😅

EU: Forbidden until proven it's edible
US: Forbidden if proven it's deadly
😂
Americans are just built different.
Thalidomide was "proven" safe in Europe but not the US. It's almost like it's not that simple. Unless you want a stumpy child and think that's perfectly safe.
People eat morels all the time where I live. I’ve never heard of this happening.
@@shelfcloud487 I remember when this happened, as I was visiting Yellowstone at the time and the restaurant was still closed while I was there. It was in Dave's sushi restaurant in Bozeman, MT. 40 other people also got sick there from eating morels. I barely dodged the bullet myself.
YAAAY, BREW AGAIN! I shook my phone so hard I'm excitement to see his face!
This channel got me hooked on RUclips, I treasure this character.
I like your face. Ok have a nice day, bye bye.
Woohoo, it’s Brew!!!!! 🥳👏🏼🙏🏼 Great to see you again, man!
I've searched for and eaten morels all my life. I never heard of them being poisonous.
I gathered them in woods in Illinois, dried them, and later ate them. Delicious. I had no idea they could be prepared incorrectly.
My mom, brother and I used to pick and sell Morels and Chanterelles (spelling) every year about 40 some years ago.
I've been eating them all this time and never heard of them being poisonous either.
Same here! Been gathering and eating them for literally as long as I can remember with no problems. You must really have to mess up the preparation for it to be poisonous
@@motionless_horizon
I hadn't heard of morels until I was 18 and newly married. I agree. Somebody tell us how to make morels poisonous? That must be some special skill. :)
My parents and grandparents have always warned us to always cook/heat up all mushrooms we picked before eating them. They did not want to take the risk. Even chanterelles.
I'm sorry but a sushi place called Dave was the ultimate red flag.
I repeat.
So theres no Japanese person name Dave? And we should just trust all sushi restaurants with Japanese name & staff? Is that what you're implying?

Brew!!! You should make a video about the people who pass away from eating turtle meat in Zanzibar
Whaaa?! 😬😧
Like our precious sea turtles, those turtles?
The what??
Sounds interesting
@@TiredMomma Yup! Saw it on the news yesterday and apparently it’s a luxury food, yet has a high mortality rate.
At this point, Brew has pointed out more things of what not to eat, than what we commonly know, should know, already.
I love your videos
Yet, the Board of Health fined me for having a well maintained bird feeder.
Who put mushrooms on a SUSHI?!?!
Chinese probably, I wouldn't except Japan but they also are known for weird foods. But other than that, Steve No Jobs
Something is wrong here. Growing up and living in Oregon, we have picked and eaten Morels all our lives. We put them in soups, deep fried them, cut up on salads, go with steaks, put them on hamburgers and even dried them for later on.
Even though, I don't like raw mushroom, I like it cooked. But I was surprised to hear it could be that dangerous when it's eaten raw.
Uhhhh, lots of people in Missouri have already went gathering for them. It's a yearly thing. Even the Missouri Conservationist, that I've seen, hasn't mentioned they're That toxic. They've included recipes before that involve those mushrooms.
Thankfully I can't have any mushrooms. The type that is actually more common with asian noodles though is different, and non toxic, but does have prep rules to follow.
Are you Brew because you like to brew coffee, or do you like to brew coffee because your Brew
Hmmm.. yes?
when i hear sushi and illness i first think of possibility of improperly handled rice can be very dangerous
Another new Brew video! Neat!!!
I feel like they lost on quality
That reminds me Morel season is coming up. Yuuuuum
Chitin isn't toxic, and it's in all mushrooms. Also, no ordinary oven or range gets hot enough to break chitin down.
As for hydrazine being the cause of morel toxicity, it's just a hypothesis; nobody has confirmed that it's in them, probably because they're too expensive to test. As long as morels are cooked properly, though, they shouldn't be toxic.
When I think of my foraging experiences for mushrooms, I'm weary of where you harvest them, as mushrooms are excellent at absorbing nutrition and toxins from the ground.
As morels are primarily foraged in the wild (generally difficult to grow), it's possible that some toxins contaminated an area where morels grew, resulting in them becoming toxic.
I grew up eating fresh morel mushrooms and never got sick.
DYING LAUGHING I TURNED DOWN A JOB OPORTUNITY THERE THAN THAT WHOLE THING HAPPENED A MONTH LATER
Huzzah new video!!!
This is exactly the video I need to watch when having lunch at a shushi restaurant
Eyyyy shout-out little ole Bozeman! Yes, those asking the restaurant is still open...
@3:37 5000 fleshly mushroom species, not 5000 fleshly mushrooms.
As someone who has foraged for and consumed morels (among other mushrooms) in the past, I am aware that a lot of mushrooms, even those that aren't deadly, can cause issues if not prepared correctly. In a similar vein to fugu (pufferfish), mushrooms should require a license to be prepared in restaurants.
Mushrooms can be terrifying. So many of them have unique poisons and lookalikes
never thought I’d see Bozeman MT on here LOL
That's enough to never eat those mushrooms. 🍄
about time Brew himself is back
Sooo I’m not eating sushi ever again.
Or just order it without mushrooms

I live in Bozeman, but I've only been to Dave's once. It was just kind of okay, I thought. Won't miss going there.
I'm pretty sure it is still open, though.
Even my grandmother did know the sometimes poisonous quality of "Morcheln" and the likeness of the poisonous spring lorchel.
I always thought that the problem lied with false morels like the Gyromitra family. Gyromitra tend to be in season in the early summer (and get scarcer towards the south, although they do pop up down south in Mexico at least), while most wild mushrooms tend to come towards the autumn. In Finland for example, true morels aren't very common but Gyromitra are eaten... only after boiling at least twice in abundant water, discarding the water in between, and flushing after each boiling. Also the preparation room must be well ventilated.
hi brew i love ur vidos i do wish u post more oftin
2:16 Morel mushrooms are good tho- ppl eat them all the time w.o ever dying
2:51 Oh. Btw you can also go Morel Hunting! (Didn’t realize they were so valuable money wise tbh, good to know!)
The journal "Fungi" features Morels on the cover and throughout. There is no mention of the dangers of eating them, except with respect to arsenic in morels grown where apples were once grown and arsenic pesticide applied to them.
All mushrooms can possibly lead to intoxication and death. Even bolete. Insufficient cooking and poor conservation can even turn the most edible mushroom into a deadly poison. And heck do wild mushrooms rot fast. Take the shaggy mane, for instance. A kind of mushroom who turns into ink when it rots. You need to cook it within the same day, or even half day, of picking it if you want to eat it safely.
Anyway, morels are considered as very edible mushrooms, and they're in high demand and expensive. By no means are they considered as deadly.
Mushrooms taste horrendous uncooked anyways. I have tried one of the safer food mushrooms and it's just not good when not cooked.
@@lpfan4491 what?! You just talk out of ignorance. You can eat raw white mushrooms, cremini, portabellas and enoki, and they are not disgusting at all. But you gotta eat them when they're young and fresh, not when they're old and half rotten.
Love your content Brew. How about an episode on The Hum? Like the Taos Hum and related phenomena.
TIL don't eat Morell Mushrooms (since I won't remember the "unless cooked" part lol).
Why does this video seems smoother than others
Wow! I picked and ate some of those several years ago. No idea they were problematic. Husband and I ate them cooked with no ill effects.
This is the first time I have heard of morels being poisonous.
Who would buy sushi from a man named "Dave" ? You wouldn't buy a burger from a man named Hiroyuki.
Had a really bad stomachache after eating medium rare morels about 7 years ago when we were up in the mountains foraging them. I knew this was a possibility if they were undercooked, but they tasted so good I took the risk and paid for it afterwards.
YES, BREW AND BEAN ARE BACK! Now for the rest!
Scariest mushroom I've seen. Looks like a face of a 100 Scream masks.
not this being my hometown i thought the story seemed so familiar what’s crazy is that i used to go to dave’s sushi for my birthday every year for a while before all of this happened
I wonder if the chef gave up cooking.
May they Rest In Peace 🙏
This is the reason every chef MUST learn basic FOOD SCIENCE, for safe deliciousness!! Never risk eating raw mushrooms, ever, even the non-poisonous ones!
I have a hunch that there is more to the story. It was only recently that I ever had morrells. I bought them dried from Amazon, read up on how to prepare them, and omg they were great! I immediately started to research only to discover that they are hard to ever get fresh, but I HAD to find out where and when they might be purchased, even if I had to go to States where they grew wild. But here is the point, I never came across any sources on these mushrooms that mention toxicity. Well, I am going to research this further. I love mushrooms, but the dangerous mushrooms seem to have toxins that you had better hope that you have a genetic mutation which will allow you to survive. Doctors usually have few tools up their sleeves to assure you of surviving. Especially if you are older, very young, or have liver and kidney issues. Yummy!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Brew🖤
Luv ur vids man keep it up!
My husband is from Yunnan, China and I went there twice, locals there regularly cook poisonous wild mushrooms 😂 and thousands go to ER every year because they falsely identified the mushrooms or didn't prepare them correctly. Many probably died too. But these dishes are so good I can totally understand why ppl take the chance😂
wow
So let's all agree that no one should eat at Dave's sushi restaurant?
yeah if you get sushi in montana go to seven sushi bozeman lol, anything but daves
We've been eating them since childhood including eating them raw and never thought they were dangerous! I don't know what to trust! We call them "Gaech" in Kashmiri!
Usually Japanese use shiitakes not morels
If it’s potentially deadly, don’t eat it or put it in your food, whether you are a cook or eating the dish.
Potato are potentially deadly.
I MISSED YOU SO MUCH BREW YAAAAAAAAAAAY
YOU GET ME. CAN WE BE BEST FRIENDS. YOU GET ME SO MUCH 😢 I missed Him sooo much I’d check every once in awhile and He came back I was like omg
My family and I have been eating Morels for generations upon generations.. We just cut them, clean them, batter them, and fry them.. None of us have ever gotten sick from them. I honestly had never heard of anyone getting sick from them... just the false morels, which are easy to spot.
Prefering just regular farm mushrooms. Sushi? I've eaten it before. But not often. Still questioning the freshness of raw fish.
The owners blame it on a "bad mushroom batch". Not the fact that the mushrooms weren't cooked thoroughly. Scary, these people are still in business.
Videos like this make be feel 'not so bad' about by choice to NOT eat mushrooms at all. It seems that even the ones we *DO* know, we don't really know.
if you are not sure how to cook/prepare a unknow mushroom or fish, don't do it or/and ask for professional help..
Why’s it so short 😢
You would think that the first thing any restraint would do about any mushroom is figure out if it's poisonous or not
why you shouldn't skip any step in cooking or that one missing stepp could be fatal:
"Oh, this thing is deadly poisonous as far as we know it - let's use it in our food!"
Sometimes human choices are hard to comprehend.
It's not like there aren't enough other safe things to eat.
Absolutely crazy that Hydrazine, freaking rocket fuel, is in mushrooms
I saw this in my feed AFTER I got done eating a sushi roll.
my dad gets morel mushrooms in his pasture and he knows how to cook em well, their so delicious during the morel season

I heard that you should avoid wild mushrooms at all costs because they're low in nutrition and it's hard to tell if they're safe.
Oh my god...😮
*YES I’M EARLY TO A BREW VIDEO! HELL YEAH
Seriously? Those can be deadly? We used to go looking for those mushrooms in particular whenever we went mushroom picking during my childhood and they were the kind of mushroom we ate more often than any other kind.
