Mitch had just graduated from high school at this point, and had been teased throughout his school years for his high voice. Some people stereotype guys w/high voices as gay, and Mitch was attempting to avoid that while on a nationally televised competition. But over the years he’s become more comfortable with himself and how others might perceive him.
Yeah, he even trained himself to have a lower speaking voice if necessary. (If you search masc Mitch you can find some clips where he demonstrates that he can speak like a dudebro if he wants to - which is the most bizarre thing I've seen in a while. It's also hilarious. )
Kristin Howk That’s a shame. He has such an AMAZING range! Scott mostly sings lead but everyone loves Mitch because of his absolutes beautiful, pure sounding voice! I’m so glad that he has allowed himself to use his whole range because PTX wouldn’t be PTX without that pure, pretty voice!!!
Avi is adorable throughout the entire Sing-Off, with his weird dance moves and emotional reactions and blushing. Such a baby-faced, slightly fumbling cutiepie. He changed a bit after, I think.
Ben's comment was that they rushed the song at some points. After this performance, they started rehearsing with a metronome to make sure it didn't happen again.
That's part of what made Sing-Off great. The judges are sincere and provide constructive criticism if they have any. They want each group to reach their very best
I feel like this was the performance that solidified who Pentatonix is as a group now. Listening to the first few Sing Off performances I don't quite feel it, but listening to this performance again, it's so distinctly Pentatonix.
@@daarianaharis I think this particular performance is the first that has the Pentatonix sound that we're used to now, but I think you might be right, Love Lockdown is where you get a really good feel for what each member brings to the group and what actually makes Pentatonix, Pentatonix. They all really stand out in that performance. To be honest, it's not my favourite, it just feels a little bit chaotic to me, but I can definitely appreciate what each of them does in that performance, they're all animals, hahaha.
I think the consensus is that this is where it really came together and for the first time they showed what they could really do. But, wait 'till the next one. Even better.
FYI, Sonos was the big-name group before the season started. They had a big fan base in LA and toured nationwide. They were known for their use of pedals and looping to create more sounds in concert. Their bass singer left before they tried out for the show, then they tried out using their pedals which they were told they could use in competition, but then were told that they would not be able to augment their sound electronically after all. So they scrambled to fill their low end with their baritone as well as they could, but never got their mojo going and were booted the second week. In the short time they were on the show together, though, PTX and Sonos really connected, so much that Avi started dating the blonde in the group (she’s seen often cheering them on in the audience in later eps). They’ve changed their name to ARORA and are still together and performing.
I love that you comment on the technical and vocal aspects rather than just "wow that was good"! You should (please please please) react to Avi's Change on the Rise!
Charlotte Van - that really sucks for those of us with no way to become a Patron. I hope he eventually releases it on his main channel, even if we have to wait a few extra weeks or something.
Ben is a technical genius, in my mind. "Almost" every single time he speaks, if you really listen to what he's saying, he's giving the groups excellent advice in terms of how each can "technically" improve and be more cohesive, which if heeded, will lead to better performances and more confidence. I feel that without his criticism early on, PTX might not have evolved as quickly as they did in the show.

With Avi: their originals Sing and Love again, covers, cheerleader, Rather Be, Can't hold us, Evolution of Michael Jackson, and Royals With Matt: Sound of Silence, Shallow, Can you feel the love tonight. You are one of my favorite reactors! You are awesome.
This is when they pulled ahead of the rest of the pack, and never looked back. Pentatonix' ability to envision, design and deliver the "XF" (special effects), as well as the sheer entertainment value of their musicianship and choreography became apparent. BTW, did you notice the "lawnmower zip" special effect that Avi put into two or three iterations of the chorus? Go back, it's really cool! (3:26 min. in)
True, and they should have aired it the previous week, because the interview with Pentatonix after their critique (where they were pretty subdued) didn't make so much sense because we hadn't seen that much critique. But I guess they didn't air it because if they had people might have questioned why Pentatonix wasn't axed in that episode. That was pretty harsh criticism.
Playing ahead of the beat means hitting the notes for the beat a liiiiittle bit early. Playing behind means a liiiittle late. Only by a couple microseconds, just to make the groove groovier. Usually drummers and bass players do this to make you feel sort of a "longing"
corvus13 Same. I watched TSO as it aired and this was where I really started rooting for them, especially because I also liked other groups that were competing.
A little background on how the show was scheduled. They filmed on Friday, then were given from Saturday to Tuesday to get their song(s) ready for producer approval. On this week, two groups weren’t doing well and changed their song after the producer heard it. The other group, North Shore (old school doo-wop group from Boston), started with Mmm-bop by Hanson, then switched to The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News. They never got either to gel and were booted this week. PTX, well, you heard how they fared!
So fun watching this with you! The next one is great too. I really appreciate your comments as you have very good musical insight. Can't wait for you to see them all!

They cut and edit the judges comments so you DIDN'T hear those exact comments. They were added in here to coincide with the group interview portion. I've found some behind the scenes improv style work that shows that 2 days to this group is like a month for most others.

Yes!!! Really liked this one a lot, one of my favorites performances from The Sing Off. Loved your reaction as always Kyle, keep it up!
Kyle, Congrats! I noticed you just hit 5k subscribers! You've checked out PTX & Home Free so far. 2 of my 3 favorite aca groups. (Voiceplay is the third) But I check some others from time to time and there's a new acappella group you should take a look at. This group was put together by Scott (from PTX) along Ben Bram and a few others PTX has worked with. (The same group responsible for Citizen Queen) With these guys behind it you know the quality will be there. The group is Acapop! Kids. (All are under 16) Their only have about 6 or 7 videos out, the first one only came out about 3 months ago on their youtube channel. I'd recommend 'High Hopes' or their 'Bohemian Rhapsody/Sombody to Love' mashup. Check them out while their still relatively new & not that well known!
The criticisms by the judges are edited for TV. They are much longer irl. So they have a lot of comments to consider that we don't see and thus they have extra for using in the 'history' clips.
The song is very, very, VERY, 80s. VERY 80s. But they did a wonderful job... Very 80s. Very. I think that what Ben meant about Scott and the rhythm section was that there were a couple of times that Scott kind of stepped on Avi & Kevin's sound, pushing them into the background a little. It was a very minor thing , but it seemed like Ben frequently dug for something that he could say that wasn't 100% positive. And with PTX, that was sometimes VERY difficult. As the senior judge, I think that Ben felt a need to give some kind of, well, teaching moment. With Pentatonix, there was little he could say to help.
I can see what you are saying, but given what I've seen in other shows, I really appreciate Ben being constructive in his comments - just "That was great" doesn't help much :-)
@@elizabethsantersero9597 Constructive. That was the word that refused to materialize in my sixty whozis year old brain. I actually agree with you 100%. Constructive criticism is definitely a good thing for the judges to provide to the contestants. Would also like to see you review Can't Hold Us-PTX, Radioactive-Lindsey Stirling with PTX, & Shatter Me-Lindsey Stirling feat. Lucy Hale
I agree with your uncertainty about Ben's comment. There was something in there that he never said in the clip they aired. I think they must have edited in comments from a different critique, maybe a different group's critique, or something.
It you are inclined to see the competing groups on season three, I recommend Delilah, Afro Blue, the Dartmouth Aires, Urban Method, and Vocal Point. No need to react to them, but just to see (listen?) to what Pentatonix was up against. Any one of those groups could have won, in a season that Pentatonix had not competed in.
I don’t think they were ever likely to choose a college group like the Dartmouth Aires. From the perspective of getting a recording contract to become a musical success it just doesn’t make sense. The membership is always changing as students graduate and new students come in. It would have to be a stable group that could go on to record and go on tour as Pentatonix have done.
@PJ Schmid I have always felt that allowing the college groups in was a mistake that detracted from the show's appeal. I was on the forums because I loved this show, and most of the people thought that it was ridiculous to have these huge groups that were never going to use the recording contract, career-wise, at least. Or, the old-time groups (who I loved to listen to) who should have been voted off earlier, but weren't out of respect, but that eliminated more versatile groups. I think that they hurt themselves by trying to have too broad of a spectrum, rather than focusing on talented, innovative, groups that were trying to launch their careers.
Fun fact-PTX were not the only people to become famous after being on this season of TSO. A member of the Aires has just recently gotten some attention as an actor, Clark Moore in the film Love, Simon and a tv show or two. He was one of the two most prominent members of that group and a real fan favorite of the season.
Yeah, they do indeed kill it and make themselves skip like a scratched record. Be warned however, the eleventh, "Without you" is totally cringe worthy.... Heck, at this point, it wasn't even a career yet. Keep watching..... Two days is all they had before they auditioned for the show, they met as a group two days before the audition and had to hit the ground running without really knowing each other. They all work so well together, but Kirstie and Mitch are like tow twin peas in a pod. Yeah, they do their best work under pressure. I agree, this is the first major turning point where they actually began to become a "Real" group and work together for the best of the group as a whole. I think that decision of changing songs really began to cement their team work. Peace, Love and Light Kyle!!!
Honestly, that song wasn't really that cringe-worthy. But that is my opinion, I feel like the song was really about how they felt about each other like friend wise, but everyone has their opinions.
Something about Without You wasn't working... they were exhausted, it was a new stage and they couldn't hear each other well (according to them), the mic feed was bad (according to audience members who have said it sounded fine live?)...but it wasn't the arrangement. The version they did in that parking garage was bomb

Hey, I'm late to the party. No, I don't think Ben said "those exact words" in the video you reacted to. I didn't see this when it was on TV, but I've watched these RUclips clips a lot. I get the feeling that the judges said a lot more to the performers than what was shown in the TV edit.
ring of fire by home free feat avi please it really shows the difference between both bass singers. love the vids keep up the good work
great reaction. Dude you need to check out Marcelito Pimoy the prayer on wish . i won't give anything away, ill just say you have never seen anything like this before....
Please react to Mitch’s vocal range. He can do whistle tones!!
The only spot where they really did that was after that huge crescendo and they were walking down stairs there and people were clapping and cheering so loud...other than that they were perfect IMO!...
When you rewound it to hear the end again if you’d a gone a bit further you would have heard the part where they jumped the gun the most. Referring again to Ben Folds comment.
You need to react to the wizard of aaahhs. It’s amazing
Ive just found Teddy Swims, I think you would enjoy his voice as well
Have you done "The Dog Days Are Over"? That's my favorite performance of their Sing Off performances. Please react to it!
Not yet, he is doing them in order and that is number 12. But I know what you mean.
@@pjschmid2251 Thanks :)
Dog Days and Let's Get It On are my two favorites of the series.
Please also react to their Dog Days are over!
I hope you do Home Free's season on the Sing Off too.
Would love to see you do a reaction to the full episodes so that you can place PTX better against their competitors. Just search The Sing Off Season 3 Full Edpisodes
You should do Kevin’s Sign of the Times cover
PLEASE react to "Ren and Sam Tompkins - Blind Eyed (live)" !!!!! They're incredible singers!
