Gosh that was a rollercoster of emotions. It started out like it was going to be funny, but as the episode got deeper it became real. Grant with his physical pain of leaches, and Ally with her emotional pain of her ex. The end of the episode I felt the crushing debt and how far they were willing to go.
Ally was in much worse pain. Leeches release a numbing agent when they bite as well as an anticoagulant. So grant had literally zero pain other than a slight pressure on the initial bite. Ally had to munch spicy af food while talking to her ex. Very painful.

Did that lady just say that leeches are FDA approved?
Yea, but they usually are not used in that way. Leaches are great at treating things such as blood pooling after surgery or promote blood flow in reattached limbs because of their anti-clotting agents.
Leeches are giant water mosquitoes I don't think they are helpful.
oddly enough they're used in reconstructive and plastic surgeries to encourage blood flow to skin that has been moved or reattached so they need to be approved.
Leeches are sometimes used after limb reattachment to help swelling
It's like how maggots are still used in medicine, surprisingly. Maggots that are bred to be sterile are used to remove necrotic (dead) tissue, as they only eat the dead bits and leave the living ones, which there isn't really technology to effectively do.
Dude. I’m 41 years old, and I don’t have the words to adequately express how horrifying this is. I’m in debt, but not anywhere near their level. I can’t imagine the relief they must feel to potentially have $20k knocked off their debt, but it says something about the desperation people without a decent job must feel when trying to pay off student loans. Way to bring it to the forefront.
As a 20-something who has a mountain of debt and is struggling to find a job in my degree field, it means a lot to know that these pseudo-legendary figures that I look up to are actually on the same level as me as it turns out. I love this on so many levels.
Ikr. I expected them to be out of Liam with the money they make
Did you get a marketable degree?
The thing that struck me about this is that they both got degrees that were worthless, acting (from a college in Ohio!) and philosophy. Why go into debt for that shit?
@@Rowlurorowf When people you trust and who are responsible for guiding you in the right direction tell you your whole life that you can be whatever you want, you try to do that. Our entire generation was told that college was a safe investment and that going to college for something and working hard and getting good grades meant getting that job. It’s only after the money’s spent and all these people are left holding the bag that everyone comes out of the woodwork to try and retcon in caveats
@@TheGillionaire you're not wrong. That being said, the obvious intent there isnt simply going to college, but also going to college with purpose and intent. I doubt those trusted people said to go to college and just party and do minimum work and barely go to class, or that it didnt matter what degree you got... likely they didn't say anything the specific degree until it was too late when most people have decided upon their path or stopped listening. I think Grant even said that his parents didnt want him to get the degree he went for, and that he screwed up by not applying himself. I'd be surprised if Ally's parents supported her Pgilosophy degree... and what's she doing going to freaking Holland if she doesnt have money to pay her debts? There is a level of reasonable expectation from adults that you know enough by that age to understand you have to apply yourself, not just to the class or degree, but also in your own life determination.
I would also argue that parents and teachers who taught their kids to trust instead of trust but verify, or critically think and review on their own with supporting documentation when someone tries to screw you over, did those kids a great disservice. Frankly, if one doesn't know how to critically think their way through a situation, or talk their way out of a situation, no degree is going to do much for them.
College is a scam for the most part. It depends heavily on the individual to determine the value of the classes they take and the intent to learn. In this day and age, there are plenty of resources to do that without going into debt.
@@TheGillionaire I would also argue that people dont retcon caveats, just that most kids don't listen. I know I didnt, back in the 90s, and I know I've had difficulty reaching my kids on the same point. Everyone thinks they know at that age and usually find out the hard way that they dont. Luckily, I taught my kids enough to protect themselves and verify the info they receive from as many independent or at least separate sources as possible, and question, question, question.m, AND document.
9:10 Apparently 90% of the crazy sketches I've seen, were just the CH staff being themselves.

I love Rekha's signature "Shut! Up!"
As an Irish citizen we pay 3000 euro a year for undergrad studies (about $3,390.04). Even if you lived outside of your home to get into this kind of debt would be almost impossible. America is more expensive than I imagined.
In Latvia most programs cost 6-8 thousand euros (7-9 thousand dollars) in total for undergrad, in our top university.
Grant must have had over 100 thousand in student debt, it's absolutely absurd.
College education in America is very corrupt it’s abusive to the students and unnecessarily costly. I am pretty sure it’s colleges just sucking up federal money at the expense of the student’s future life.
In Brazil we have private universities but also public ones where you have free classes
In Denmark we get paid to go to school over the age of 18, it depends on if you still live at home or you live for yourself. If you live alone with no kids it's around 930 dollars per month, if you live at home it is less and if have kids it's more. You also are allowed to work while studies, but there is a earnings cap, so people don't just in roll in a school and work all the time anyway. You can still get student loans, but they are not that bad as the interest rate can be as low as 1-2% and you have 15 years to pay it back too after you leave school, but if you live cheap you really don't need it, as you also get support to pay the rent as your earnings are low enough for that too.
Average cost per year at a public school is $9,970 in the US (in state) and $25,620 for out of state. Private schools average $34,740 per year, but obviously there are schools that cost more of less here depending on the location. Also note that this is just tuition, doesn't include housing or meals - which can cost $10,000 a year through on-campus programs.

I signed up for Dropout specifically to watch this show.
So who won?
Holy shit. Last night I was doing this thing I do, from time to time, where I log onto my students loan page and look at all I've paid, all the interest accruing, calculate how much I've paid and how much I still have to pay and how the numbers just never add up to feeling like I'm making a dent. It makes me feel like my life is over when it's just beginning, like this is something I'll never be able to get out from under no matter how much I pay in, and I feel pressured to pay more and more to try not to have to pay even more later. So yeah, this hits home in a very visceral and real way. I would for sure put leeches on my body if it meant that weight being lifted. Thanks for putting it into words.

It's so nice to see the cast as normal friends just hanging out
Leeches are a great metaphor for student loans
I think the crap thing is that older generations rip people a new asshole for paying for schooling or "getting a useless degree." Most students are taking on debt at 17-18...right out of the gate from high school, where jack squat was taught about loans and nothing was said about the difference in degrees. Many going into college are coming from families and parents who'd previously never been to college or went when it was cheap and almost any degree guaranteed a good paying job. Parents, teachers, and college recruiters tell all of these teenagers to reach for the stars--that an education is worth it in any field so long as its something the student is passionate about. "Just put your digital signature here and poof...welcome to class!" Young adults that have hardly been out of their parents' houses and had a chance to live and figure themselves out end up taking on mountains of debt. We shame them if they don't wanna rush to jump into college, claiming they must be lazy and have no direction, and we shame them if they *do* jump. We push them into higher education blindly and then yell at them for it.
A few semesters in or a degree later and next thing you know, you've got sixty-five year-olds calling a whole generation stupid, lazy good-for-nothings spending thousands of dollars on what's now considered "crap degrees." Even if they are working multiple jobs and working on taking care of their debt. "By the time I was your age, I had two kids, a car, and a house. I was a waiter and paid for my college at the same time. Maybe if you weren't so busy taking pictures of your avocado toast, you'd be there too!"
@Sally Vee You know, ...
your parents are probably baby boomers?
Ally looks really good with long hair.
Don't get too attached to Ally's current look. It doesn't last.
So Sam seems like a pretty great boss, right?
“They used to use leeches as medicine”
Then it killed a bunch of people, and Washington I think.
I'm sure the giant hot pokers they used to cut his tonsils out had nothing to do with him dying
You’re thinking about blood-letting which is very different from leeches. I don’t think medicinal leeches have ever killed anyone who wasn’t already on death’s door.
You guys are killing it with all these new shows!
Katie is no longer kidnapped!!!!!
...guess that kidnapper got tired of her stealing all his cocaine lmao
She escaped because she was sick of home flirting with her.
Taking her to a cartel safehouse would be like kidnapping a swarm of rats and keeping them in a bakery.
If this show gets big, which I think it will given the situation basically all of us in college are in currently, you guys should broaden it to the public. Like have friends who apply compete with each other. It’d 1. Really help out people with student loans, 2. Show just how bad this shit has gotten that now so many people are willing to do wild shit just to stay afloat.
You scroll through the comments and there’s a lot of people, myself included, saying they would do this kind of show. Sign waivers, do some dangerous fear factor shit, and get some money to pay off our debts.
Obviously this is just the first season, and you’d need the funding and I’m sure there’s a lot of legal shit that’d have to get done if you open it up to the public, but I think it’d do really well...also I need money because I’m about to graduate and immediately be thrown into debt so ya know...I’m ready and willing to do whatever
I'm kind of emotional, because this reminded me of how thankful I need to be for my parents who made sure that I would go to college without loans. Not only did they save money, they pushed me to work my ass off for scholarships. Thank god
I didn't know leaches could climb. I dearly wish I still didn't know that leaches can climb. But I do know. I know now, and there's no going back.
They are fast swimmers and can also move efficiently over land. sorry to say.
Leeches are cool, I have one as a pet. Maybe I'll name the next one Grant.
I love Um Actually so much, but this is the one that’s getting me to get a dropout subscription
*in the second episode of total forgiveness:*
Allie and Grant laid out, chopped up in tiny pieces for 70,000$
“...They’ll be fine”
There's an irony about Grant getting leeches on him while he realizes the education system is leeching off of him
grant coverd in blood and in pain: thank you
