Yeah, it's about L.A. too. "Hills are filled with fire." My favorite song and album by the Doors. Riders on the Storm was on this album too. Another great hit, Love Her Madly, with the line "Don't you love her as she's walking out the door" also on this album.
I'll be the first to say it Mr Mojo Risin is an anagram for Jim Morrison. This was also the last studio album produced by the Doors before Jim's passing yet another member of the 27 club
For live performances, Ray played the bass parts on his keyboard, but not for studio recordings. The Doors used session bass players on every album. Jerry Scheff played bass on L.A. Woman.
Welp. You just blew my mind. I knew Ray was crazy talented but I guess he's talented enough to totally trick me into thinking there's an extra instrument other than him. The man is playing for 3
Yay! My favorite Doors song! Thank you, J! And you’re right, Jim was feeling it! You’re also right that the “woman” is a metaphor for the city of LA, according to an interview with Jim.
Jayvon, I love your reactions because they are exactly what the musicians wanted to see. They want you to FEEl it as well as HEAR it!! I still get a kick out of the way you reacted to The Stylistics, Teddy Pendergrass (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes) and Humble Pie's Black Coffee! Those musicians touched your soul brother!! 50 years after they cut the record!! That's the mark of excellence! One other comment, The Doors drummer is a jazz drummer, the guitar player is a Flamenco player, the keyboard player is classically trained with a background in jazz and blues. Jim the singer was a huge Frank Sinatra fan. Mix it all together and out comes the music of The Doors! It's hard to believe that such a unique sound is the result of this diverse mix of players!! You hit the nail on the head, this is a song to ride out to ,with your windows down and your stereo loud! I been doing exactly that for over 40 years!! You are a man that has a great ear for great music. I look forward to your observations and appreciation of the best music ever made..1960s and 1970s! The greatest decades for not only quality musicianship and lyrical content but also a great quantity of memorable bands!!
Quintessential California sound, the seamy "dark side," or shadow to the lighter sensibilities of the music of the Beach Boys, both great American bands and integral to the timeline. RIP Jim and Ray.
Yes, this song and Riders On The Storm are both from the masterpiece L.A. Woman album, the last to feature Jim Morrison before his death. One of my all-time favorite albums, and my very favorite Doors song. This was one of Jim's poems. It's not about a woman, it's about the city of Los Angeles, with Jim comparing the city to a woman who's seen more than her share of action in her life. The line in this song is not "riding", it's Mr. Mojo Risin'. If you re-arrange the letters in those three words, you get "Jim Morrison", so that part of the song was about himself.
This is hands down my favourite Doors song, the whole album is a masterpiece. L'America, Love Her Madly, and Been Down So Long are also just great. My very first love.
This is why The Doors are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Apart from the more obvious blues and folk elements, you can hear the influence of native American music, especially in the 'Mr Mojo Raisin' section and also elements of Indian (Hindi) classical music. Absolutely excellent track.
It is on the same album as “Riders on the storm” - It’s a love letter to Los Angeles- I only lately realized the “I see your hair is burnin’, hills are filled with fire” - is kinda literal! On the outskirts of LA there were a lot of fires at the time.

This entire album is perfect to listen loudly when driving around Los Angeles (just try to avoid the 405), it just fits the L.A. vibe perfectly, even 50 years after it was recorded.

This is one of their top 3 songs for me, they were firing on all cylinders on this one. It had enough changes and hooks for 3 songs. Morrison seemed to be channeling something even if every note wasn't perfect he was in the zone as was the rest of the band. Killer bass lines, love the keyboards and excellent guitar.
He's referring to the woman as the city of LA...metaphor's, Jim was excellent at using them in his lyrics. Mr. Mojo Rising is the letters of his name mixed up... I knew you would really like this one.
Way ahead of their time as a late 60’s rock band. Jim Morrison was a film student and poet, who ended up in a rock band. Son of an Admiral. You should check out the movie “The Doors “ While it’s Hollywood-fied, it’s a start.
His dad commanded one of the boats that, under orders in the Gulf of Tonkin not leave the area without returning fire, claimed to be fired on by the Viet Kong, giving the US the excuse to go to war in Viet Nam. Some reports say the US fired first, others say the Viet Kong weren't even in the area.
Thanks 🙏. My Favorite singer and band 😊. Check him out singing "The End" at the Hollywood Bowl 🍜. Midnight alleys roam. When I was a teenager, I heard on the radio that Jimbo was arrested for being drunk in an L.A. alley. 😊
The DOORS rabbit hole will easily consume you.
Stands the test of time. Hauntingly beautiful . . .
❤️😎 Agree! They were really chameleon like
Crystal Ship and People are Strange are two of my faves, both so...otherworldly.
Well put!
Mr. Mojo Risin' is an anagram of Jim Morrison, the singer. Clever, isn't it?
